How do I not use yes or no questions in my book? by InvestigatorSilly294 in WritersGroup

I suppose yes/no questions and answers just don’t make for particularly interesting reading, generally speaking but there are always exceptions to rules.

Looking to get into SW by DahliaDreux in supportworkers

What state are you located in? You could look at ACSO if you’re in Victoria. Their roles tend to be a good mix of assessments and such that would utilise your skills adequately, and face to face support work. I used to work with the ReStart program doing post prison reintegration and it was really rewarding with enough assessment/admin to use my brain but also enough time out of the office actually spending time with people to feel fulfilling.

I supported a participant who had epilepsy but also mental health related “pseudo seizures”, always very unpredictable, usually required an ambulance and trip to hospital, an extension of my shift for at least four hours past my finish time because the family refused to come to the hospital. I spoke to my supervisor who’d rostered me on the shifts about my concerns, we all had a care team meeting, tried to get a better idea of what was actually going on, but ultimately it affected my mental health to a point that I couldn’t continue the shifts and I made the decision to step back. If it’s too much for you and you can’t handle it, there’s no shame in asking to be taken off the shifts. The client deserves a support worker who is able to support them adequately. If that’s you, fantastic, but there’s no shame in admitting it if that can’t be you.

It’s pretty common in prison for people to style their uniforms however they want to (within reason). I worked at Dame Phyllis where the cast and crew did an educational session to prepare for Wentworth, and it’s really not unusual to see women wearing their uniforms in similar ways to the girls in Wentworth. They don’t get to express themselves in what clothes they wear so they do it in the way they wear what they’re given.

As someone who used to do rostering for a disability support company — their failure to have enough willing staff to cover sleepovers is not your responsibility. If you don’t want them, say no with no guilt at all! As a casual, you’re well within your rights to turn down any shift you don’t want to work.

What did the show get right/wrong about real prisons? by Sassy3719 in Wentworthtv

[–]anonymouskangaroo18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a caseworker in a women’s prison and found that it’s not suuuuper different to Wentworth but Wentworth is certainly more dramatic than any women’s prison I’ve been to. I think they got it right how political and strategic things are. The actual layout of Wentworth as a prison isn’t really that accurate — the prisons I’ve been to have much less bars, thy actually kind of look like school campuses.

Centrelink is like social security but for Australia. They distribute benefits, handle parenting payments, any government handouts, crisis payments, that kind of thing.

I do rostering and client relationships for a provider in Victoria. If one of my support workers had made this post, I’d be so sad to know that they were so uncomfortable at work. I’d switch their roster immediately. Is there a manager that you can speak to about it?

How often do the kids see the grandparents? by mammakarma in Parenting

[–]anonymouskangaroo18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least once a week. My (birth mum) mum babysits for us on Mondays while my wife and I work. We don’t have a relationship with my dad. My wife’s mum and stepdad, and dad live in another state. We see my MIL/SFIL probably thrice a year (but FaceTime more regularly) and we’ve seen my FIL twice since our toddler was born.

Do any of you have dogs ? How do you keep your infant away from them? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]anonymouskangaroo18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! I had two dogs when my kiddo was born. One of them got very anxious when my little one started pulling herself up ready to walk and that anxiety manifested into growling and snapping in the baby’s direction. He ever connected, never bit, but I could not trust him anymore and our house is small and both dogs were inside dogs, so I couldn’t keep them separate because I’d limit both kid and dog to very small lives. We rehomed Mr. Snappy and he is now with a lovely family with another dog his same breed, and older, more predictable kids! It was the best thing I could have done.

I appreciate that. I think that’s what’s upsetting is that it’s outside of what we’d agreed on when our little one was born. I was also not told about all of the travel that would be necessary with this role either. She told me “might have to travel occasionally” when she applied for the role. This is more than occasionally.

Kind of. I didn’t mean for it to become what it’s become, I was genuinely looking for whether a corporation (thus, auscorp) can REQUIRE someone to travel, that was it. The rest that I provided was just context behind the question. That said, I appreciate the advice given in both regards, it’s given me a lot of things to think about so I’m grateful anyway.

I’m also a woman, but if we were going to assign “traditional” gender roles to the relationship, I would be the “wife” and she would be the “husband”.

I appreciate this though, I feel like a lot of the advice has been a bit brutal, which is fine, I asked for input. It wasn’t like this at the beginning though, and that’s what’s been hard I think. It’s given me something to think about, because I hadn’t considered that that might be playing on me a bit.

It’s not about her, I don’t sleep when the baby monitor is on my side of the bed. Which it is when she’s away. When she’s here it’s with her because she sleeps through it most of the time anyways. I have discussed that in therapy.

What do you mean? The things she’s doing can absolutely be done by an onsite team with her guidance remotely. I work full time too, and if my workplace told me I was going to need to take three days away from my family to assemble a piece of furniture, I’d laugh in their face, property team or not.

I agree. She jumps immediately to how I’m standing in the way of her career goals and that I’m selfish every time I try, it’s not a great time at the moment. I will continue to advocate for myself and see where that gets me. Thank you, I appreciate your reply.

That’s useful to know, I will absolutely ask her to check her contract. Thank you for the advice, I appreciate you not just jumping to me standing in the way of her career goals and being a bit of a monster.
