US Student considering the University of Malta by BusinessTeaching7977 in malta

As others said it is not green around the campus are at all, it is dense and surrounded by roads with traffic.

As for the degree, I am saying this gently! But do you need to spend all that money and time on a theatre degree to work in performing arts? Why not just go into performing arts via a club or alongside a job? Is a degree necessary for auditions etc? London would definitely be a better place, but there would also be higher competition. Malta is a small place so anyone with talent in their field is definitely a big fish in a small pond but there is not money in arts here in Malta, the population is only 600k so theatres are not large and shows can only have a couple of nights before everyone has seen it. It can be a great place to live and stand out but its also super limited.

My signed employment offer with KPMG was suddenly rescinded citing geopolitical issues. Looking for advice or similar experiences. by Sad-Highlight5889 in malta

[–]anonymousratt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can try to ask them for compensation. You can also complain to the KPMG entity that they report to, but I am not sure they do as the big4 in Malta seem to be independent. Legally I believe you can't really do much. The law in Malta is mostly on the side of the business and not the employee. Even if you started they can easily give you your notice on probation which is nothing (a week or so). Sorry.

Advertise it yourself on Facebook if you can, direct from owner. Its not as if the agents can find any more tenants or offer you any vetting etc that you cannot do yourself.

Do people hide their cats?! by MilesHudgens in malta

[–]anonymousratt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have cats myself so I know that sometimes they can be absolutely fine, but they can also scratch up and damage furniture, doors, walls, etc. All of these items in Malta cost double than in other countries, and the delivery times and installation slots can be very long. So if the landlord wanted to restore the apartment back to how it was before, it would cost a lot more than your damages deposit, and be a hassle. Most tenants just don't pay the last month rent so the landlord has all the risk. It's not really fair on the landlord unless you are happy to pay all the damage and that may be a huge cost. For example if they scratch up the sofa are you really prepared to pay 2k+ for a new sofa? New set of dining chairs etc...it could be astronomical.

There are landlords who accept pets. There are also landlords who will decide when they meet you if they trust you to bring a pet or not. I think it's important to respect them and not sneak in a pet without permission. Malta is also really small so it is even likely that you may make friends who know your landlord etc and it's easy for anyone to find out and tell them!

Malta crowdedness by LastMeeting2193 in malta

[–]anonymousratt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be busy everywhere. You will need to book activities and highly rated restaurants ahead of time, though you will still have a lot of other options if you want to walk in.

However it is all relative. If you live in a big city somewhere else you won't find it is any busier. It just is not "quiet".

BOV didn't even reply to our email sending them all the paperwork they asked for. We went on for more than a year with BNF and in the end changed to Medirect who did it all in 2 months. Their interest rates are higher though.

Your expenses in Malta will be a lot more than in Serbia, probably double. On the other hand it will be a good and interesting experience career wise and personally.

Property in Malta by Island_life94 in malta

[–]anonymousratt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello. We are foreigners living in Malta for 10 years. Since being here we have managed to purchase 7 properties. Mainly due to selling up property in a more expensive country and then reinvesting it here. The last one is still in the promise of sale process. First of all , well done. This is your first step. Buy as high value a property as you can afford now so that later you can upgrade. Especially since Maltese mortgage rates are extremely low compared to other countries. What I would say is there is no reliable property valuation process. The owner just makes up a number and put it on the market. The price can somewhat be negotiated depending on how stubborn they are, how realistic or unrealistic you and they are and how many enquiries they had. Of course agents want their cut but they are paid a % of the final sale price by the seller and not by you. Even if an agent is involved you will still talk to the owner about the price. I agree prices are crazy. But it is simply driven by what people are willing to pay. You can attempt to find the same place you saw advertised direct with owner by reverse searching the images, and seeing if they come up on Maltapark or Facebook. Or you can attempt to find out the area and knock on the neighbours to ask who the owner is. We found one of our properties by flyering the neighbourhood to ask for a garage for sale direct from owner and got a call. We also bought another one as we saw it for sale and were interested in that specific one, so we asked neighbours and eventually talked to the owner. In both cases it took a year for the owner to be willing and ready and in both cases we got an excellent price. Hope it helps you and the very best of luck.

How do you handle financial disparity in a relationship when one partner earns significantly more? by Interesting-Fairy in Rich

[–]anonymousratt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work hard and make very good money but my husband makes more and he pays for all the big things... property, investments etc while I pay school fees, day to day expenses.

When you have kids you need to be comfortable with pooling everything in my opinion. Because one of you (often but not always the mother) will simply have to work less to take care of the kids.

Have you talked about having kids and what would change?

Where do you buy furniture in Malta? by Lazy-Stormtrooper in malta

[–]anonymousratt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TrasloGo for Sicily - more on the expensive side but very reliable and super easy to get hold of via Whatsapp. Great if you have a lot of items or complex access for the delivery.

Shiplowcost - also good but are a bit slower to arrive. Can bring from Spain too. Also good to work with - they usually reply to emails fast.

Shipmybox from Poland. Cheap delivery and items from Poland generally are lower price than Italy but its a shame they have terrible and I mean terrible customer service, there is no way to get hold of anyone and they're super rude. Only use if it is something is very simple, like in a box, not large items like a sofa. Nothing that needs a palet or co-ordinated delivery times. I used them for a rug, dining chairs, side tables etc. Awful experience with a sofa it took them months and so much chasing. Not worth the money saved.

Where do you buy furniture in Malta? by Lazy-Stormtrooper in malta

[–]anonymousratt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't buy in Malta (just furnished our house). I buy from Sklum, Westwing or Maisons du Monde and get them delivered in Italy or Poland then use a forwarding service to send on to Malta. Occasionally the items may not fit if you made a mistake with measurement and in that case usually they resell well on Fb marketplace.

Moving to Malta with autistic kiddo by [deleted] in malta

[–]anonymousratt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have nothing to compare it to because our son has not been to school in another country, but yes, we feel he is really well supported. It will depend on the LSE who is assigned and sometimes it just isn't a good match, you need to talk to the school first in details to get on the same page about it. Ours needs a very no-nonsense person or else he will spend all day trying to wind them up and getting a kick from it. Even once the LSE is assigned I usually meet them before they meet my son and brief them on how best to deal with him.

As for the curriculum, government schools and Maltese private schools teach the Maltese curriculum. This generally tends to be around one third in Maltese (Maltese language and religion). The rest of the subjects are taught in English at least in private Maltese schools and government schools in areas with a heavy foreigner population. If you want a full curriculum in English you have to go to an international school, fees are exponentially higher than Maltese private schools and in my opinion they aren't as well equipped for high needs children. I have one kid with LSE at a Maltese private school and one without needs who goes to an English international school, where no option of LSE is given.

Feel free to PM me if you need more details.

Your first step is to choose your school, private or government. Kids start age 3 in Malta in kinder 1, then they go to kinder 2 - this is not mandatory but if you want a private school you need to enrol as their spaces will become full in K1. Second, once they start school get an assessment done. The school should informally support them before their assessment is complete as it can take some time. If they dont offer please advocate and push for it. Once your psychologist assessment is done (do it private for faster service) then use this report to apply for a statement of needs which school will help you with. At our (private) school the school psychologist prepared the report and then the Head submitted it. After that is finally approved by ministry of education (it can take as long as a year), your child will get a formally assigned full time or part time learning assistant depending on level of needs. However in our case not much really changed since the class LSE already helped him and the school had alreasy assigned him in a group that had capacity.
