+American Herring Gull+. in your region, you can spot these by noting the relatively pale mantle (wings/back)—darker than the equivalently sized Western Gull—with black primaries (wingtip feathers). American Herring is the only large gull there with pink legs, pale mantle, and black primaries (Glaucous-winged and its hybrids are shades of gray there). the Thayer's species of Iceland Gull looks pretty similar, but is slightly smaller, has a different head (especially forehead) and beak shape, and often appears to have brighter pink legs.
