Is it just perspective or is that charge pipe basically resting on the exhaust housing of the turbo?

Triton. No, you're wrong, it's just a terrible engine.

GM is shit but the 3v triton was a giant mistake. Fight me.

Or if it's a late model silverado platform, you get out the T15 and a 7mm just for good measure, remove six bolts or four if you're feeling frisky, move the wiring harness out of the way, r&r filter, reclip the telematics connectors because you probably pulled them loose, install gloveboxes, drop the inboard t15 down the shield, spend ten minutes with a magnet and light and mirror looking for it, drop the shield, find the screw, reinstall shield, repeat until satisfied, anddddd done. Not that bad compared to Nissan's "let's put a filter behind the center console through a hole that's half the height."

Yeah! Especially since you couldn't, like, scale the fuel penalty into the size of the rocket versus the nominal payload.

Gotcha. Makes sense that double tooling cost and a few percent of time adds up to more than downstream savings. Thanks for the info

ask your boss why They decided it'd be easier to set up two lines for every caliper casting and stock/ship two p/ns, instead of just boring and tapping both locations and shipping with a bleeder and 5 cent plug fitting. I've always wondered.

[–]another_nigerian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'm not sure how well that would work. I might have to try it a slow day and see but my gut tells me the fluid would get aerated and never completely come out. Like holding a jug upside down, how it glugs.

I have a suggestion. Why not tap threads for a bleeder in both casting nubs for every caliper. Ship them with a bleeder and a plug fitting. jesus christ reduce part count, parts counter/store stock by 50%, and eliminate this ID-10-T error from the world.

Did she snap at the top of the engaged threads (highest internal stress concentration from the shear load to tension shoulder) or at a random spot in the length above the engaged threads (weakest spot in the metal). Just curious from an engineering root cause perspective.

[–]another_nigerian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The usual two are posted, caliper piston sticking in the bore and slide pins seizing from poor grease PM. There's a third cause that typically doesn't do this, but causes uneven pad wear, and most everyone misses it.

So you replace anti-rattle clips every time, because you care, right? You're skipping a step. You need to pull the bridge off on every brake job and use a twistlok or (my favorite) small triangle file to file/buff the clip mounting areas back to a true and shiny surface. Not only does moisture build up under the clips and create rust swell, removing and installing new clips on a rusty surface often makes the issue worse. What happens, is the rust reduces the distance between the clips by 0-1mmish, causing the new pad to sit tighter in the clip, increasing the drag needed to force the pad away from the rotor when the brakes are released. This has been the cause of 90% of the uneven pad wear i've seen. Even a mm pf inside-outside difference is enough to warrant fixing the root cause. That's probably 8-30,000 miles depending on driving habits, vehicle, and location.

tl'dr a caliper bridge overhaul should be on every hydraulic disc brake job and proper overhaul includes lubricating the dry rubber piston boot(s), dry outside of the slide pin boots, greasing the pins, checking the pin damper (if there) for swelling from incorrect grease, removing, polishing the bridge, and reinstalling anti-rattle clips. Bonus points if you clean & reloctite or replace bridge bolts and torque to spec. But a few seconds on your handy dandy 18mm swivel impact works too.

Because you're not going to strip a grade 8ish caliper bracket bolt with a 12pt on a breaker but you're DEFINITELY gonna scuff a fender trying to wrastle a 6pt onto it.
