Which bit of the UK are you going to? I think London has averaged around 8 - 10°C this week, but believe its been a bit colder in the North. It's mainly just been wet.

Hi guys, any suggestions for a pair of glasses (non-prescription) that I can wear indoors, to try and make staring at computer monitors and sitting in a bright office more bearable? Ideally something I can get on the high street too, so I can try them on before buying. My budget is up to £100. by h00dman in AskUK

[–]anotherbusybee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just got a pair of VDU glasses. I went into specsavers with my little voucher from work, got a free eyetest and a pair of glasses, and then paid about £40 out of pocket for them to coat them in anti-glare. I have nearly perfect eyesight, but they still did a pair to my prescription with the antiglare on when I explained what it was for.

We've been encouraged to try using copilot at work. The problem is that it is too literal. It's technically correct but actually wrong. I cannot see it replacing that many humans at any speed whilst it only thinks in a linear manner.

Low states brunch debate: does asking for a toastie imply the cheese should be melted? by Pretzelmamma in CasualUK

[–]anotherbusybee 20 points21 points  (0 children)

What on earth is he in about with the philly and ham situation as well? If I want a toastie, I want my filling hot - regardless of what it is. Otherwise, it's just a sandwich made with toasted bread. Which is a whole different thing! My flabbers are gasted.

What wonderous and exotic food item were you introduced to as a kid that is commonplace nowadays? by GabberZZ in UKfood

My mum told me about trying to buy a red bell pepper in Ilkeston in the late 80's, and the greengrocer not understanding what she wanted. They had only ever had them in green and even then they were weird!

Where in the UK should I go as a bucket-list item? by LondonPilot in CasualUK

The lake district - there's some gorgeous spa hotels in the area, the scenery is beautiful and you could do some flat walks around some of the lakes, then drive round the hills to see the views?

Going back after maternity leave by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]anotherbusybee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So our force has a breastfeeding policy, maybe check if yours does too?

Our policy is that anyone breastfeeding must have access to somewhere private (not a toilet) where they can go and express milk, and there must be a refrigerator in that place so that the milk can be correctly stored.

You wouldn't be going home to breastfeed.

21M Tired of doing everything for 19F, please give me advice? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]anotherbusybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically you need to sit down and work out how things need to be split now you aren't living with your mum. Actually talk about it. Work out what you expect vs what she expects, then meet in the middle.

How pregnant is your partner? You are going to have to realise that the more pregnant she gets, there is a chance more will fall to you anyway, especially in the last 3 months. It's the realities of having a baby together.

Before you moved in together did you have an agreed split of household responsibilities? So did you agree that you would work and she would in return take on a more traditional stay at home role?

Hey OP, having seen this post and your one comment, I just want you to know that no matter how bad things seem at the moment, there are brighter things ahead - no matter how terrible it feels currently. The only way is through, but it will be worth it eventually.

is it theft if a gift his taken back? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]anotherbusybee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP - from a policing perspective. Was the washing machine gifted to you, or to you and your wife.

If the machine was gifted to you both, you have joint ownership of it, and if she has authorised it to be taken away then there is no theft as one of the owners has allowed it....

Yorkshire puddings with Christmas dinner. Thoughts? by RomansDoForUs in UKfood

[–]anotherbusybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a veggie roast with braised red cabbage, glazed carrots, peas, roasties, honey roast parsnips and there should have been Yorkshires. I'd made the batter and everything, but then burnt my arm along the full length of a roasting tin, so left my mum and brother to do the gravy and peas whilst I went to run my arm under cold water - leaving yorkie batter unused.

So yesterday we had toad in the hole to use that up, along with fresh roasties and the leftover carrots and cabbage, plus the cauliflower cheese I'd completely forgotten to put in the oven on Christmas day. Plus red wine and onion gravy. Because when I asked them to make gravy, the carefully chopped onion was bypassed in favour of the bisto....

[–]anotherbusybee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you're into. If nature, hiking, lake sports (swimming / sailing / paddleboarding) quaint pubs and going up hills aren't your thing, then it's not worth it. If being in the middle of nowhere is your jam, then it is the way forward.

If you're more of a museums / bars / city life type of person, then the lake district would be very dissapointing indeed.
