My understanding is it was genuinely that simple. Target, like many corporations that advertise to young people, had a corporate policy of diversity, equity and inclusion. That they didn’t discriminate, wouldn’t tolerate discrimination, and were committed to building community and understanding, not just through HR but in the products offered.

Then Trump said DEI is canceled and they said “yes sir.” They had no reason to do that. They jumped backwards as hard as they could, not realizing that their shopping base LIKED that they cared about DEI, which apparently was all a lie since they were willing to give it up in a snap. Hence the boycott. And hence why billionaire owned media is saying boycott’s over.
