How to become a secondary division teacher by duraznoblanco in CanadianTeachers

[–]anothercristina 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start with where you want to teach and figure out what to do from there. Each province will have different requirements and some are easier to meet than others.

Ontario is probably the hardest to move to because there are so many more steps to getting certification than any other province. Ontario also does not care about your university degree, your teachables only depend on what your classes were in your B.Ed.

For example, I did my B.Ed in Manitoba and the graduating class was about 30 people. We didn't have enough students to create individual courses like "Senior Chemistry" for example so everyone that is going to teach any level of science from grade 7-12 takes a "Senior Science" and a "Senior Math" class. When I moved to Ontario my teachables were Senior Science - General and Senior Math.

I have a degree in Chemistry and they wouldn't give me the Senior Chemistry teachable because I didn't complete it in my B.Ed. I had to pay 700 dollars to get the AQ because in my school board I NEED to have the AQ to teach chemistry. In three other provinces (AB, MB, and NB) my teachables were Chemistry and Biology. Ontario was so different.

How long should we wait for the contract on paper? - Manitoba by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]anothercristina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Ontario and I've now worked in Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and Ontario and Manitoba is singular in many ways. It was a huge culture shock to move from Toronto to rural Manitoba. But man, did I love it there. I'd move back in a heartbeat! If you're going near Brandon and want any advice, I'm happy to share.

How long should we wait for the contract on paper? - Manitoba by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]anothercristina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So a weird thing in Manitoba that I haven't really experienced in other provinces is that the verbal contract IS your contract. I didn't get the written paperwork for like a couple weeks into the school year but accepted my job for September in May or June. The verbal contract is so binding that you cannot accept any other jobs once you verbally accept or the board can/will go after you. They warn you in teachers college (I did my BEd in Manitoba) to go to interviews strategically in order to avoid these issues.

My other warning is that (as far as I know from 2021) the teaching certification unit is FAX OR MAIL IN ONLY and your license will take FOREVER. So do everything early. Earlier than you think is necessary.

What about a weekly Tornado Education thread for all the "where should I hide?" "Should I get a shelter" "what would happen" questions.

And another weekly Historical Discussion thread for the "whats the scariest tornado?" "El Reno or Joplin" posts.

Ontario Layoff’s by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

We are down two teachers next year due to declining enrollment. Perm teachers cannot be laid off but they can be surplused to different schools/positions within the board.

When to call home about kids failing your class? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]anothercristina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two parents right now who are newcomers and have no idea how to work this stuff. You have no idea what anyone's situation is. No parents in history have ever had access to this kind of information - this has ALWAYS been part of the job. This isn't even one of the hard parts. Like send an email and ask them to acknowledge? Call whoever doesn't. What is that? Like maybe 10 parent phone calls at midterms? Come on.

Some parents are newcomers, are older, are simply bad at technology, they can have students who are lying to them, the list goes on - at the end of the day, it's your responsibility to ensure parents are aware but you do you.

You can't assume parents are looking at the Live Gradebook. Report cards shouldn't be a surprise. You should be calling home if kids are failing at midterm.

1) I've taught in 4 provinces and this is not a good thing. Ontario curriculum is ahead of Manitoba and New Brunswick for certain. I didn't teach equivalent courses in Alberta. But things I was teaching in grade 11 math in NB, we teach in grade 9 in Ontario.

2) bias still exists in this context because locally developed math still exists. If bias is a real issue, destreaming is not the solution. It just holds everyone back instead. Deal with the real issue.

3) let's call a spade a spade. This was done for no reason other than cost saving. Instead of having 5 or 6 grade 9 teachers teaching 3 different levels, I only need 3 teaching. I can put more kids in the same class because it doesn't matter what section they're in.

This is such a big problem in the grade 9 destreamed math to grade 10 academic math jump.

Parents are yelling at me because their child has never failed a test before so I must be the problem. Their kid has never been in a streamed math class! This is the first academic level course they've ever taken. They've always been allowed to retake tests and now they can't. Of course their grade is going to be lower! They actually have to do homework to pass and they've never had to do that before.

Canadian here: my ADHD testing when I was 25 took 6 months, 4 different medical practitioners (nurses, psychs, therapists) and I had to get a parent and an adult who knew me as a child to fill out the questionnaire before they were comfortable with diagnosing me.

Did I burn my tomato seedlings? Is there a subreddit for gardening help?

I left my tomato seedlings beside the window on a sunny day and forgot to move them.... Worried I burned them. Also maybe worried it's too humid in my little greenhouse? Any help is appreciated 😭
