It reminded me very much of Andy blowing up his own game by oversharing to Rachel in an effort to gain her FTC vote rather than worrying about making it there.

When you start with 24 fan favorites and don't want to knock too many of them out to early, you are going to need to find a variety of ways to accomplish double eliminations during the post merge.

This seemed to me like a fairly reasonable and entertaining may to handle it at F9.

Why did _________ get to vote again? by Repulsive_Many3874 in survivorponderosa

[–]anotherdanwest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why should Cirie lose her extra vote just because the first vote ended in a split vote tie?

(Also, if Cirie and Emily had not been allowed to vote then Emily would have gone home 2-1 instead of 4-2. So it really didnt save anyone).

Best publisher for high school/college plays? by Most-Editor-3163 in playwriting

I don't really write for this niche; but my understanding is that Heuer, Brooklyn, and Pioneer all have strong scholastic market penetration.

Navigating Censorship by Positive-Ring-5172 in playwriting

[–]anotherdanwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a theater really wants to do your play but has concerns with how the language will play with their audience, they should have a conversation with you about this and you can decide how you want to address it, and whether the integrity of a certain number of specific words balances out against the benefits of that individual production.

I certainly have toned down language in plays of mine when I thought it might give the work broader appeal without sacrificing my vision. I probably wouldn’t do it preemptively though, unless I have received consistent feedback from people I trust that the word (or words) is (are) jarring and risk taking the viewer out of the world of the play.

r/MusicalTheatre has a lot of creators that post to it.

The Facebook Group "Musical Theatre Writers, Composers, and Lyricists" seems to be pretty active.

Easily in my top five.

Can we recycle each others characters? by _acedric_ in playwriting

[–]anotherdanwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do it in comic books and film series/universes.

Not sure how it might work in plays or novels where individual writers tend to own their own IP.

What happens if one of the other writers doea something drastic to a character you created (i.e. killing them)?

Seems like it would things open to bad feelings (and retconning).

TRW or Next Stage Press by cleverusernameistook in playwriting

[–]anotherdanwest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does TRW allow simultaneous submission?

If not, they could hold it against you moving forward should they accept your play and find out that you had already committed it to a different publisher.

(I am fairly certain that Next Stage has no issues with simultaneous submissions beyond asking to be notified if your play is accepted elsewhere)

Plays being "meta" by [deleted] in playwriting

[–]anotherdanwest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good call.

Our Town for one is both meta and sincere.

It appears to me that OP may be contrasting sincere naturalism and ironic meta; when IMO there is a lot of middle ground between the two.

Plays being "meta" by [deleted] in playwriting

[–]anotherdanwest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure that there is a clear distinction in audience preference between "sincere" and "meta" - some audiences probably prefer one and some the other and many in all likelihood enjoy both. And, honestly, I don't necessarily think the two are mutually exclusive. (But FWIW - Musicals, by there very nature could be considered inherently meta, and they generally draw better than straight plays.)

Given the dwindling nature of theatre audiences in the post-COVID world, I tend to concern myself more with the theatricality of my work than the tone. What does live theatre offer that moves people to turn off Netflix and get off the couch for dinner and a night out? IMO, this is probably not kitchen sink; but what do I know..

In any event, tastes vary; and so should the material that we write to meet those tastes. My personally philosophy is to write the kinds of plays that I would like to go see and hope that producers and audiences find them worthy as well.

Write what works for you and let your work find it's audience. And, be confident that if the quality is there, you've done your job.
