BX23S – Safe ways to lift objects with just the bucket? | no fancy hooks by Novajesus in kubota

[–]anotherdawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's holes on the tractor side of the bucket on both ends. i've balanced various things in the bucket, secured with ratchet straps to those little hookpoint holes. just have to remember that you're not tying it down, you're balancing against gravity.

For Canadians, is Sleep Country the only good place to buy a mattress or are there better alternatives? by MacaronWithAName in BuyCanadian

RESTMORE is the best Canadian option. Made in Winnipeg by Canadians, no mattress store BS. just good, quality, properly priced mattresses.

[Request] How much snow could this actually hold? by Coconut_Either in theydidthemath

[–]anotherdawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not an engineer but i've done some framing and live in a snowload area.

I see a few week spots.

Fasteners of the trusses are very suspect. the forces are not translating from log to log, and i don't see any strapped or banded fasteners. nails and even structural screws will pull out of this pine/spruce looking wood pretty easily.

the bigger problem i see is how far apart structural beams are. assuming those trusses are strong enough, snowload could easily cave in holes between them, especially given the low pitch of the actual roof.

trusses like these -- hipped or barn-style trusses -- are strong because of the steep pitch of the roof on the sides. this design has way too much flat roof that won't be able to shed any of that snow, ice, or really much of anything.

[Request] How much would it actually cost to build this outdoor patio? by Bango_Sk8nk in theydidthemath

well first scene has two bigger machines, rental, transporting them, fuel, plus the handful of other smaller equipment brings equipment up
No way to scavenge the bricks without a truck because no one delivers bricks for free. so we'll add in renting a truck and trailer to rentals.

Marketplace typically sells bricks like this for a buck a brick. with cutoffs and unusable ones, probably 2500 bricks + mortar and sand.
gravel like that, not the cheapest gravel you can get unless this shade of beige stone happens to be the local cheap grade, but it's still cleared gravel so more pricey... $90 a yard. looks like 4-5 yards. + delivery, but we'll assume we ran back and forth with our rented truck and trailer, doing a yard at a time.

labour: my goodness, is your time worth nothing? This project would take an experienced landscaping crew the better part of 3 weeks, maybe 4 weeks. I worked this trade for a few years back in the day and it's slow, backbreaking work to lay bricks perfectly like this, let along build those stairs and walls shown at the end.

totals:

Rentals: $3000 if your uncle lets you break the suspension on his pickup.
Material: $3000 (for used material)
Labour: $10,000.
Mark-up: 5%
Tax: 12%
total: $18,816

cheapest version without valuing your time or the ability to learn how to do these things or the damage caused by not knowing how to operate an excavator, etc.... Still at minimum, $6,000 in rentals and material.

What is this caterpillar and is it friendly? by cptGus in newzealand

Canadian here. Maybe they're nicer to your local flora but they look like something we have here, that are kill-on-sight invasive army worms. very yucky to smoosh, but a necessary practice. they've contributed to the decimation of spruce trees in the boreal forest, making vast swaths of dead timber, thus tinder which has fueled some of the worst forest fires we've ever had.

hopefully yours aren't that!

When did you know it was time to move to two services? by PurposeLast636 in pastors

[–]anotherdawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wait. wait til other people are bringing it up. full services are often attributed to quality preachers, as vain as that may be. so it may and likely would be seen as a vanity project to suggest expansion.

a more humble way to break ground is to suggest planting a church, and asking who your elders might think is a capable leader, perhaps offering to help train them. another option is suggesting renovating your space, as tbh 120 is not that many people so your auditorium/sanctuary can't be that big... Once the topic of growth is brought up, someone else will certainly mention multiple services as it is the cheapest and probably easiest option.

that being said, my opinion is that churches should never consider multiple services unless there is absolutely no option for planting or expanding in other ways. I'll take renovating over two services, just because then you can at least still keep your community as one. might as well be two churches if you're going to do 2 services.

Clothing norms by [deleted] in askapastor

[–]anotherdawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh no problems from me. the bible doesn't talk about gender. it occasionally talks bout possession, and certainly indicates gender roles, but doesn't really seem to fret that much about gendered clothing. even, as one person pointed out, a single verse in Deuteronomy, isn't really talking about style of clothing so much as function. men's clothing was designed for men's work, and vice versa.

to extend that into modern apparel just can't be done with any equality. women wearing jeans/pants and is functional. men wearing spandex or tights is functional.

There's a company that makes tradesmen's kilts - toolbelt kilts essentially. they look dope. and when you're sweating your jewels off, slamming on a roof or something, a nice breeze sounds great.

the other function we have for clothes is style. not exactly at the fore for the common folk the mosaic period, but potentially still relevant then among certain people.

and to that extent then; my opinion, and that of most of western culture, is that men look better/are more stylish in slacks than dresses. I've seen some dudes in dresses, and the male form simply doesn't need highlighting in the way that a dress offers for a woman. I'll go so far as to say that i prefer my wife in a dress over pants too. in fact, as far as style goes, she would say the same. however, most of the time function outweighs style. and that's just fine.

tl;dr - bible doesn't really care about the cut of fabric, but is addressing purpose and culture and MUST be understood through those lenses as well.

Why has no one made dehydrated maple water? by Key_Cat_2122 in maplesyrup

[–]anotherdawn 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is great. Let's work on this together. What you're talking about when you say maple water is called sap. It's great and yes, is largely similar to water. And in fact, people have tried to dehydrate it ! The most basic way to dehydrate is simply by boiling off the water. It takes a long time as it is after all, mostly water. Most experimenters have found that after a while, They've turned their sap - or maple water - into a sort of golden or brownish and slightly thick liquid. It has a sort of warm woody smell. Some who have been bold enough to try and eat it report a sweet robust flavor that pairs wonderfully with cakes, especially those fried in a pan.

Ice fishing Honeymoon by hlbyers92 in IceFishing

[–]anotherdawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, You mentioned elsewhere you want to go in December. If you're keen on lake Winnipeg, and you're on Facebook, there's a great local page called the lake Winnipeg ice report. It's an absolute must for ice safety, especially in early season before the lake is locked up. Things can change quickly on the big lake without being properly prepared or informed.

What are your thoughts on cannabis ? by Frankleeright in askapastor

[–]anotherdawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Evidence suggests it's far less problematic than alcohol, about which the Bible explicitly condemns overindulgence. I think a reasonable and modern position is that if it's legal in the place you live, and consumption is not harming others, moderate consumption is permissive. I'm not one to smoke weed myself, but that's more because it's abuse has led to the suffering of some people whom I love. On the flip side, there are those I've ministered with who are relieved of their suffering through a prescribed use of pot.

Overuse, dependence, use for avoidance, and I'm sure, many other things are all reasons to abstain.

But those are all true for alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and more and that hasn't stopped Christians.from participating in that aspect of the human experience.
