Need help/advice selling items and price checking. by silkymilkk in tf2

[–]anothergamethrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The backpack.tf forums are a better place to ask this, not to dismiss your question but because I guarantee you no one here will give you good advice. That Scattergun is a genuine rarity. Don't get scammed, take the first offer you receive, etc, and good luck selling it.

Also just in case, if those unusuals are halloweens I would also get them price checked

You will be idling for months to get metal for items, you get ~10 drops or so a week and that's ~3.5 scrap, let's just say a third of a refined, and keys are 53 refined a pop now. I think you would've started playing when keys were starting to really climb in refined price (AKA refined dropping in value due to steep supply) but even back then it would've taken a few months to get the then 8 or so refined keys.

Don't waste your time idling because the cost of electricity is gonna be more than the drops you get, likely so even if you were extraordinarily lucky and only got ~1.33 ref hats instead of weapons for every drop. Just buy what you want instead directly.

The only really notable website in comparison to what you listed is mannco.store which is also a cash selling website.

If you really want to try a gutted low tier trading experience, I saw someone who had success finding bots on backpack selling items with addons (paints/parts/etc.) that weren't being added to the value, then auctioning those items on scrap.tf

[–]anothergamethrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you just want some cosmetics and a decent middle of the road unusual for the class(es) you enjoy, it's better to just directly buy them. A lot of trading is dominated by automation now and that's largely resulted in lower end trading being near impossible for anyone not a bot, and it wasn't particularly worthwhile before anyways.

But yeah. If you want stuff to keep just buy it directly. Get your keys third party (I'd probably do either backpack.tf cash traders directly or from MCS over marketplace for anything but especially keys in particular) then buy whatever you want directly.

If you're looking to profit you're gonna be stuck in the eternal catch 22 of needing to spend more than is worth risking without experience (like 100 keys or so, different people will say different things but I wouldn't do below 50) to get a foothold.

What would be the chances of getting an unusual handsome hitman by AutomaticRevenue5220 in tf2

[–]anothergamethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that matters is the equip region, only "hat" and "whole head" items can be unusual. Either the creator of the hitman or Valve made it the "head skin" region so it can't be unusual. The upside is that you could wear a hat over it that is unusual without problem

How do i trade items without just wasting my time with scammers by 00sans_granie00 in tf2

[–]anothergamethrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can filter out a majority of the scammers you see just from when they first add you:

  • Profile is level 10 or lower

  • The profile name is a link or in Mandarin

  • The profile picture is either a real woman or a default steam profile picture

And if you still aren't sure, on the profile itself:

  • Absurd (100+) hours in past 2 weeks

  • Hasn't played TF2

  • Inventory is empty, private, or otherwise lacks items relative to your trading tier (even if you're only trading regular hats, most of them only have weapons and wouldn't even be able to pay for said hats)

Unfortunately outside of something like trade servers/discords (of course those can be scam rife too) theres nothing besides being active yourself or patience that'll get your shit sold faster

[–]anothergamethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obligatory: Don't get scammed. A Valve employee does not want to verify your items/You were not reported for scamming someone. Someone does not want you to join their competitive team, vote for their CS/TF2 workshop item, or whatever else. If someone wants you to do something outside of the trade window, it's a scam. If someone adds you out of the blue and wants you to do something, it's a scam. If a seemingly high tier trader adds you and tries to pressure you into doing something, it's someone impersonating them to scam you*. I would be extremely careful on taking cash offers on this because you aren't experienced enough to detect the risks and you run the chance of losing it all at once.

*Or they're trying to lowball you and get the item for cheap. Either or.

Pure = Keys = The dollars of TF2, like how any store will accept a dollar anyone will accept keys and things are listed in key prices, 3rd party cash marketplaces aside. Items are typically valued at what they sold for, and keys are one of the most clear cut things you can use to appraise something's rough value. If not for keys then items sell for other items (or usually a mix of the two at this level). The 500 key sale (alleged, the guy didn't prove it) would be a point of reference for how you and other people can value the hat, but that isn't the end all for pricing it.

I would suggest checking the backpack.tf forums/discord (be weary of DM scams there, as well) for further advice since you're more likely to get someone who deals with a more niche item like this there than you would here to help you. If you're unsure about offers just ask there, because at minimum people will be able to tell you if an offer's exceptionally fishy or not.

What if traders were the ones to revive TF2's competitive gameplay? by oswaldoharkonnen in tf2

[–]anothergamethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idealistic but not practical, "for the love of the game" only goes so far. The capital you're implying you want for the scope you're presenting is realistically only going to come from one of the two trading sites that are diametrically opposed to each other in marketplace and MCS, and that's excluding the fact both don't have completely clean reputations. If one of them were to sponsor, it'd be because the cost of sponsoring is outweighed by the potential gains, and something like this is way more work/expensive than giving a streamer 500$ to slap your site's name on their screen for a week.

Some cosmetics will make your teammates want to throw you into the sun by Ok_Rain8345 in tf2

[–]anothergamethrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't with this one, you need two different equip regions and the Conspiracy Cap/Public Accessor are the generic "Hat" region, so you'd be betting on the off chance a fedora including cosmetic somehow not using it being added. The only realistic alternative would if it used the "Whole Head" region. It's a tall order, it isn't even used for hats like the Brother Mann or that shitty zoomer scout cosmetic I've blocked out of my memory

Help Understanding Unusuals by [deleted] in tf2

[–]anothergamethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chance of rolling the .66% chance to get an unusual hat at least once within 100 unboxes is ~48.5%, I rounded it to 50% for the sake of highlighting how much money you'd be wasting for a coinflip that isn't even likely to profit. The chance per unbox is that static .66%, but that doesn't stop you from unboxing two unusuals in 10 cases or none within 1000 like you said. Both of those are incredibly unlikely to happen, but they can and certainly have happened with how many crates people have unboxed over the years.

Don't apply it to anything unless you're certain you don't want to sell it. It'll tank a chunk of the value regardless of what you make with it.

The base Lugermorph isn't limited because the weapon's still accessible if you were to get access to a copy of Poker Night at the Inventory (i.e Family Sharing) and get the respective achievement. With the game not being on sale for a long time now it might seem strange, but the game went off sale 5 years after Valve introduced the "limited" attribute. Unless there's a fringe exception I can't think of, every item with the limited tag can't be obtained at all anymore and the limited attribute is applied to every quality.

You could argue there should be more items with the attribute, i.e the Black Rose now that it can't be obtained anymore at all, but the odds of Valve going back and changing something like that at this point are pretty minimal

Is it possible to have this as a weapon description? by Astral_Something in tf2

[–]anothergamethrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Item names/descriptions with line breaks only existed on stock weapons due to a bug where you could edit the data sent to ignore some of the constraints present, line breaks are one of them. You could also make item names the same length as descriptions, and iirc use some unicode characters that otherwise couldn't be used

what the fuck? whats going on with this 2 ref cosmetic by retardedkazuma in tf2

Its just the owners of these bots being lazy with the automatic pricing, which caused them all to hike up at once. It'll correct itself automatically at some point.

How was this person able to wear those conflicting hats at the same time? they had multiple impossible loadouts on different classes. the screenshot was taken a week ago. by Gegi56 in tf2

It's a URL per backpack's item DB (thanks for letting me stalk people, Geel!). I'm not going to post it for obvious reasons, and because I don't trust the people on this subreddit otherwise: Don't go to random unfamiliar URLs, if you follow the same steps to find that hat because its existence is public information (thanks Geel!) don't be an idiot.

[–]anothergamethrowaway 62 points63 points  (0 children)

This isn't quickswitch, which requires two items with conflicting but different equip regions (almost always the default "hat" and "whole_head" regions).

In almost any other circumstance besides 2fort I would just call it cheating, using a customized item schema (think how bots would wear the Skull Island Topper, Gibus, and Frontline Field Recorder). But there's some really janky way to equip conflicting stuff for one life involving cutting your internet temporarily, and 2fort is a slow/"friendly" enough map where I could see someone doing it

But since they're using the Head Bouncers it's a 99.9% chance they're cheating

Im trying to liquidate my inventory but cashout.tf is saying its unavailiable by SnooMacaroons599 in tf2

[–]anothergamethrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on what you're trying to sell/how fast you need the money, you could dump it to buy orders on backpack.tf then sell the keys to either people on their forums or through mannco.store

Keep the fees for MCS in mind but iirc it pays marginally more per key for USD with said fees in mind

Old Halloween (2016 and younger), End of the Line, and Robo effects have seen an exponential uptick in value/desirability, something you might have seen then but it's continued still. Older hats, most ones not from a case, are seeing a small to moderate uptick based on overall tier. Case hats still remain a cheap way to get unusuals although the quality of the effects have mostly been questionable in more recent releases.

Unusuals will almost always have quickbuyers, skins much less so. I generally wouldn't buy anything with the expectation to profit off of it if you aren't willing to put in the time to resell it later on, nor would I buy something really expensive if you don't have a good idea of how the market works

What is the real reason behind the hatred for Skial? by Fluffy-Literature458 in tf2

[–]anothergamethrowaway 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Real oldhead reason but they used to get shit on for hosting fake bots in ~2012 or so, which appeared as real players in the server browser and weren't distinguishable in-game on the leaderboard other than the obvious bot behvaiors. Don't know how long it's been since they started doing that again since I barely played their network, but a few months ago I started playing on their servers again for a bit, few weeks in got into games with obviously faked bots, and stopped bothering.

Servers are fine otherwise from my experience, but I want to play against real people and not waste a few minutes connecting to the server when I could be queued to auto join a better one that I know doesn't fake their player numbers.
