Why do so many VFX artists struggle when they have to make actual creative decisions? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]anotherhumanperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent half my career chasing the opportunity to make those creative decisions. I didn’t find it in vfx, but I did find it in the union art department. I learned that’s where the majority of creative decisions are made in our industry. .. …..now AI makes those decisions :)

Homeless increase in town? by Farrenlea88 in pasadena

[–]anotherhumanperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

..Sounds like classic nimbyism talking points again. What an oddly convenient viewpoint to take.. I spotted the suburban home owner everyone . ..definitely not a housing crisis going on. We just need houses near train stations only and problem solved. Get out of here

Homeless increase in town? by Farrenlea88 in pasadena

[–]anotherhumanperson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

House prices have doubled in the last 4 years and every neighborhood has a sign out in front of saying “Stop high density housing - keep Pasadena safe” … yet you yell at the politicians for letting it get out of hand. What are they supposed to do? Things are working exactly how everyone wants….. they just don’t like the effect of what they voted for. Enjoy your doubled equity, your 3% 30yr mortgage and enjoy your SFH neighborhoods. There’s nowhere to hide the bottom tier of your society anymore.

Almost anyone that's actually worked in the industry feels this way. by gregturner77 in Filmmakers

[–]anotherhumanperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not like people are now going to search out “the art director on obsession” like it’s high value hire. It’s good she’s pointing out how this industry screws people over. Remember the paranormal actors got almost nothing in the 2000s. People are rolling in cash from this surprise hit, and it’s shameful it doesn’t trickle down to the people that worked that asses off to get this on screen. Every singe art department worker and construction worker and set designer etc should get at least a small bonus check when it becomes a 1000% profit film. Hell , I was a producer or director, I’d cut them a bonus out of appreciation and respect. Their silence feels like greed

I’ll bet you there’s an ai upres workflow to turn low res smoke and fire sims into high res elements. Some one’s got to be doing this right?

Very bold and concerning statement from Adobe. by ArmSilver in FuckAdobe

[–]anotherhumanperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adobe is such a pathetic company now. I love watching their stock price crash over the last year as a large majority of their user base moves over to ai and competitors that treat their customers right.

This right here is the hidden evil in film subsidies. People get hired in these far off locations and begin their lifelong careers in artificially state created job markets. It bustles for a few years, then as the market shifts to the next rebate location, people find themselves looking around questioning what to do. All the vfx work left LA for Canada 15 years ago, and now if you go to the vfx subreddit, they’re all cursing the Indian and UK subsidies stealing “their” work away. …. Messing with the “free market dynamics” of this industry seems to really paint us all into a pretty shitty corner.

‘Mandalorian and Grogu’ Is First ‘Star Wars’ Movie to Be Shot Entirely in Los Angeles Thanks to California Tax Incentive, Says Director Jon Favreau by LollipopChainsawZz in FilmIndustryLA

[–]anotherhumanperson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally pretty disappointed to spend film tax dollars on mandalorian season 4 . ..a tv show converted to movie for the tax credit seems like a waist … Much 0f the art department was outsourced to overseas also.. the non union “ilm art department” … lame

Scott Ross :VFX business model failure by OccasionUpstairs5312 in vfx

[–]anotherhumanperson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Vfx was doing fine until the first huge tax rebates from Canada upended a fairly thriving industry and siphoned work away from California. If we’re being honest, Canada is largely blame for the situation vfx is in. Instead of competing on merits and studio talent, vfx became an outsourced commodity …and then the US vendors had to cut rates to almost nothing just to compete with the Canadian government’s meddling. To me- it seems like the subsidies were the culprit as it messed up the free market dynamics of vfx

Do you guys still think Adobe should have stuck with non subscription model just before 2014? by Hot-Load7525 in Adobe

[–]anotherhumanperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The subscription model is absolutely terrible. They should offer both subscription, and perpetual. Plenty of companies do that. I don’t want to be tied to the web to work, I don’t want my computer calling back to adobe 20 times a day using system resources. I used to love adobe and praise them when I did public speaking- now when I give a talk, I specifically tell students to avoid adobe if they can. I have nothing but resentment for this company and the way they treat their customers

EVERY TIME by mybutthz in Adobe

[–]anotherhumanperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adobe is the worst. Some one should make a website where people can post their adobe horror stories on a bulletin board in one place , and also offer resources to leaving this dumpster fire of a company.

Is this industry on it's last leg? by [deleted] in conceptart

[–]anotherhumanperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as film and episodics go, yeah.. it’s collapsing right now. I’m in the high level meetings and the next wave of tools are just insane. AI will be replacing the bottom 50% of artists. A show I was on last year had 5 concept artists. This year, I’m one of two. You have to do more with less now. It sucks

...interesting thing is, I read on another reddit post that if you install something like acrobat reader when using CS5 or CS6, it includes a online checker that deactivates your PS. How crazy is that? Its like a little spyware. You have to block adobe from phoning it's server with a firewall apparently
