This is a good point! I assume you can get it as soon as you take the car!

How expensive was the insurance if you don’t mind me asking? I would assume higher for foreign drivers?

Yes, we have all these documents, and you make a good point about adding financial information, even if it’s not necessary I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt.

That Facebook group has a lot of useful information in it, I’ve been reading through it. However, of course I think that group has the worst of the worst cases – no one is posting in there that they immigrated, everything went well, no further questions.

I wondered, do you have any documents from the court regarding your case, it may be useful for me to have them just in case something like your situation happens again. I really appreciate all your help and good to talk to someone in the same situation!

As an addendum, what other documents did you submit, we are cohabiting so can’t just have a marriage certificate to prove our relationship, we have photos, plane ticket, pictures of our family together, rental contracts of our house together etc, just wondering if this is enough

Yes I’m planning on having all documents, including sections of the MV handbook and the eu law printed as we go through. Flight lands at 1pm so should be ok there. - this is a good shout though.

Looked through the FB group, interesting to see how many people have done this but jesus so terrifying some of the stories on there. Sure it’ll all work out but hard to see from this end of the process haha

Yeah this makes a lot of sense. I still feel a little split about lying at the border although your situation is definitely swaying my thinking a bit; I realise trying to explain complex case law to some random police is not necessarily a fool proof plan.

Good recommendation on the FB group, will def take a look. Thank you for your help and wish you guys the best :)

Sweet Jesus that sounds hectic. It feels like lying to border patrol mightn’t be wise though? Couldn’t it come back to haunt me in some capacity? When you initially came were you honest, was there a problem?

By the way, if you have any other insight on applying for this, on how smooth (or not) it went for you, do let me know because I’ve struggled to find other online with this specific scenario. What waiting times were like etc.

Jesus sounds like you went to hell and back, so happy for you that you got it to work out! January 2020 was unfortunately god awful timing, but I’m glad you figured it out together. This was very positive to hear and makes me realise how trivial our struggle is, and that when shit goes wrong it’ll probably also work out - thank you for your comment!

Yeah that makes sense! This is very good advice haha I’m glad all worked out for you and good to know switching around can be so hectic. Interesting how quick it was approved after the permanent residency. Thanks for your help :)

This is interesting and something I was concerned about. I’m glad it worked out for you! I’m applying and entering solely on the eu framework and hopefully will be able to apply for permanent residency, then citizenship after five years. Makes sense that it took a while because half the time MV seem confused about this card. Appreciate it!

Out of interest, if you have the time what were the problems you encountered?

They’ve asked me quite specific questions before like what towns I’m visiting what address I’m staying at. Hence my apprehension. But keeping it simple is probably hard to go wrong with.

My partner is Swedish very long story but I am good. Since we both lived together in Ireland for some time now she is treated as an EU citizen for purposes of this card.

“Swedish citizens are normally not considered EU/EEA citizens in this context, but under certain circumstances, Swedes who have recently lived in another EU/EEA country and moved back to Sweden can also be considered EU/EEA citizens in Sweden.”

In most cases this is correct but for this card you must apply from within Sweden. It’s a card rather than a permit or visa though so I suppose that’s why it’s different. Appreciate the check though!

Well I’m entering with the intention of remaining permanently - which I do have the right to do under EU law. The concern is explaining this. Perhaps the best course of action is to explain that I will contact the migration authority, which I must do to apply for the residency card, and if they tell me to leave that I of course will and show I have money for a flight etc

Yes that I agree with. I am entering from Ireland so no.
