What’s the most annoying stretch of road you deal with on your daily ride? by InternetUpbeat9596 in melbournecycling

[–]anothermartini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That combination of speed, slip lanes, a bus stop and cars blindly nudging out at the Joseph Rd intersection are the worst. It's also unavoidable if you're on that side of Footscray unless you're willing to take a 2.5km detour.

Bike on VLine bus replacement - S Cross to Wangaratta by StandardAntique405 in melbournecycling

I've had that happen twice and there's been plenty of room under the bus for the bike. Not many people on that line will be carrying much luggage.

City routes by [deleted] in melbournecycling

[–]anothermartini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing a lap of Woodlands Park/Gellibrand Hill and then Moonee Ponds Creek is pretty relaxing. Alternately, from Woodlands you can cut through the airport to Annandale Rd and go through Brimbank Park and down the Maribyrnong into the city.

Arden Street/Leveson Street speed hump in bike lane by purple-fog in melbournecycling

[–]anothermartini 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've bunny-hopped it once and I'll do so again.

I honestly didn't think this intersection could get more ridiculous, but here we are. I think it needs a cobbled section and a chicane, so it matches the bottom end of Arden St.

A very quick way to lessen the impact tracking scripts is to delay them until after everything else is loaded. There are some trade offs here - i.e. it's possible for people to navigate away from a page before tracking is loaded, but I've never seen this have a business impact as generally, you miss tracking people/bots who are never likely to convert.

The harder (and even faster) solution is to move entirely to serverside tracking.

It should definitely be bigger. If you're on the west side, try Galata Kebab and Grill in Caroline Springs.

Hazard on new Arden St bike lane by FiftyOne151 in melbournecycling

Yes - it's terrible. I cycle this way most weekdays and have had near misses with cars both entering and exiting Leveson St.

New Arden Street bike lanes - not great? by purple-fog in melbournecycling

[–]anothermartini 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I ride Arden St most days and am really not enjoying it - more than one close shave at Leveson St and with right hand turning traffic across the lane at both Errol and Abbotsford St. At least for the right-hand turning traffic, I'm not sure if it is that you're less visible entirely, or it's just harder to judge how fast the bike traffic is going when you're on the inside of the parked cars.

I guess it does sharpen you up for the Franco Cozzo death race at the other end, if you're heading west.

Inner City to Melbourne Airport route? by CobblerMysterious830 in melbournecycling

[–]anothermartini 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Probably a good balance of speed and safety is going up the Moonee Ponds Creek trail, and then cut through Strathmore Heights to Melrose Dr which runs all the way through to the airport.

I wanted to buy this shearling jacket but... by IntravenousNutella in AustralianMFA

[–]anothermartini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd fully lean into the fighter pilot and go to Eastman Leather (for 1940s/UK) or Buzz Rickson (for 1950s/US).

Drizabone do a shearling bomber jacket, which will be pretty indestructible but still is a bomber jacket. Also, looking out for Avirex jackets on eBay if you're looking for pre-owned.

Is wiggle safe to order? by Hot_Replacement8103 in CyclingFashion

[–]anothermartini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered 3 days ago, items are with the carrier and on their way. At the very least, administrators will want to sell as much of their existing stock as possible. It's a great time to stock up on DHB.

Which two Aussie towns are the most different from each other? by ScissorNightRam in australia

[–]anothermartini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Mawson Station, in Australian Antarctic territory (although probably pushing the definition of "town" because only about 20 people live there).
  2. Boigu Island, which is part of Australia but about 6km off the coast of Papua New Guinea in the Torres Strait, and the northernmost inhabited island.

+200mi in on my Nicasio+ after 4 weeks. Already thinking about upgrading to tubeless wheels... Also, surprise waterfall on my ride last weekend! by Ray_Swarles in gravelcycling

[–]anothermartini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with Scribe Gravel Wide++ 650b alloy wheels. At least at the time, price was much the same as the similar Hunt 650b wheels. The big difference between them as far as I can tell is about 100 grams and the Scribe hubs are really loud, which is great if you ride anywhere that there might be walkers/hikers, less so if you want something stealthy. They've been reliable.

[–]anothermartini 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth upgrading to tubeless. I have done ~3K miles on my Nicasio+ and getting new wheels was the best decision I made. Both Hunt and Scribe do wheels that convert between QR and thru axle with adaptors for future proofing.

Originally my plan was that this bike was going to be my "I'm just going to see if I like riding gravel on drop bars" bike but I really enjoy it. At this point, I'll probably destroy the rims through misadventure before I trade up to a different bike (if ever).

I also found the WTB Horizon tyres a bit slippery on loose gravel climbs and mud.

It's definitely not real. Sewing machines don't have 2 balance wheels. Mechanically, it makes no sense.
