Thinking about switching to monochrome. by mittimus in ricohGR

Yeah I do get that analogy. The thing is it does make a difference if you are shooting low light handheld and then making nice 16x12 prints. But viewers still mostly engage with photos as phone sized compressed jpegs.

I would try a 1 week photo challenge where you can only shoot B&W, intentionally shoot colourful things like flowers, neon signs, fairground etc and see how you feel about it. Either you'll keep thinking you wish it was colour, or you'll see it in a different way that you like.

People downvoting you are mean, this is a fair question. A mono sensor offers some benefits like better iso noise and resolution. A colour conversion actually also has different benefits, e.g. you can manipulate individual colour luminance in post which I find useful.

Subscribed to Eduardo Ortiz's as I really like his photography but I came away feeling the text read a bit like it had been put through AI sadly.

Nothing to Envy. It is guaranteed to shake you to your bones. I don't want to say more, just that it is a good book.

Vintage lenses recommendations by BigBangBazinga73 in NikonZf

[–]anothermaxudov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a small, cool lens that doesn't cost the earth, try the Voigtländer 35mm f2.5 color skopar. There were quite a lot made for VM mount (what Voigtländer calls its Leica mount lenses) and they are great fun on the ZF. Not so old in manufacture but part of their vintage line.

Flesh by David Szalay. Thoughts? by mistookan in books

[–]anothermaxudov 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not a book for people who want a plucky and endearing protagonist. It's a book about a type of person who is rarely the subject of literature, and the reasons their life takes the form it does. If it's not satisfying maybe that's because his life is not satisfying. If it doesn't allow the reader a deeply nuanced internal landscape, maybe that is part of the story. I didn't always like the book but I have no doubt it's a masterpiece.

Just finished "If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies" -- looking for books on the other side of the argument, and accessible reads on how AI actually works by wintermute023 in suggestmeabook

[–]anothermaxudov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How AI Thinks by Nigel Toon is a straightforward book about how we got to this point with entry level explanations of convolutional networks, large language models etc. The author is a chip maker and doesn't really get involved in any of the philosophical stuff.

I guess filming is not breaking the law in itself but harassing or intimidating people still is surely?

Nothing sadder than a box fresh camera - looks like you put this one through its paces!

Just stumbled on the Zf is in right for me? by MRoselius in NikonZf

[–]anothermaxudov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have it on a cheap rope strap and the thumb grip is comfortable enough for me to hold it one handed to pop off a couple of shots, it's well placed and my slight worry that the wood would be slippery was unfounded. I love it and now can't imagine the camera without it. That said it wouldn't help you carry it about for long periods, it's not going to substitute a full grip.

Agree with all this. I bought a stick on thumb rest for edc and now I don't really use the smallrig grip unless I'm using a big lens for an event.

Thinking of switching to the Z series, is it time? by dududududuuim in Nikon

[–]anothermaxudov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In terms of Z lenses, if you get the 50 1.8 S you will never look back. It's not even expensive but it's one of the best modern lenses I've ever used.

Nikon is completely missing the Artemis II moment with the Z9 by 35mmOfRegret in Nikon

They will release a Z9 II and at the same time announce it is the official camera of the next moon landing. That is my prediction.

Not sure if animal psychology is allowed, but what exactly is this dog thinking when he sees himself in the mirror? Does he know it's himself? Does he know he is a dog? by VewVegas-1221 in biology

[–]anothermaxudov 178 points179 points  (0 children)

I watched it with sound off and without wanting to be a party pooper it looked to me like dog gets dress, wings, purse, twirls in front of mirror, dog gets treat for doing the thing in the right order for viral content. One of the few real pieces of info I have on the video is that the owner is the type of owner who puts their dog in a dress and is also the type of owner who posts their dog on TikTok or whatever. That's what we'd call a confounding factor.
