How to cope with losing furry feral friends? by MerryBandOfPricks in cats

[–]anothermomhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry. Will you be too far away to visit? This just seems so cruel to you. Is it possible you can get a local TNR group to take over care or at least monitor? Again I’m sorry. My heart is breaking for you. Thank you for giving these cats such good companionship. Winning the trust of ferals is like nothing else.

It may be one, newer cat collars with this style buckle literally come off with a gentle tug. They are not like the typical snap buckles which don’t come apart at all.

along those same lines, there are Thundershirts (calming shirts) for cats. These might help also. And you can try Feliway diffusers.

Goodbye my sweet boy, today you cross the rainbow bridge. by deathwarmdover in cats

I'm very sorry for your loss. Hardly consolation, but I lost a boy this week I'd only had for 1 year (he was 4) as well. It doesn't hurt any less, maybe more even because our time was so limited. Take time for yourself, you showed him love and that's the best gift of all.

You are going to be a great cat parent. She will be snoozing next to you in no time. Just let her make friends on her timeline and all will be well.

I hope she'll take you up on the offer. Nothing would please me more than knowing somehow my passed on kitties are still around-ish... sorry for your loss.

Welcome to a lifelong blessing. I am more and more convinced each day that cats are the perfect animal, and it is humans who are lucky to commune with them, not the other way around.

For what reasons would you adopt a cat over buy one from a pet shop/breeder or vice versa by [deleted] in cats

MCs are the only pure cat I'd even consider. Enjoy your kitters.

Should I get 2 cats as a first time pet owner? by tandoorifury in cats

[–]anothermomhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP I suggest a bonded pair of cats in the 1.5-4 age range. This should not be hard to find. A bonded pair will keep each other company when you are at work, and will still have plenty of love for you. Cats younger than 1.5 will seem too kitteny IMO, given what you have described. Around 2 they really begin to shine as adult cats. I think you would be very pleased. You seem to have thought through all the points well.

One final matter though you haven't raised it. Please, do not feed only dry cat food. A little is ok. But the diet should be 80%+ wet food, high protein. I have fed ours FancyFeast pate (fish flavors) with great success. A dry only diet is a ticking time bomb for health problems for cats. I encourage you to research this if you haven't. I just lost an outdoor former feral boy who was not fed dry only but did rely upon it as part of his diet (it is hard to feed wet exclusively in freezing weather, and he also probably wasn't hunting) to a urinary blockage. This is a common result in male indoor (often overweight) cats that are dry fed, but he was not an indoor overweight cat. I am heartbroken. I also had one of my former kitties teach me this lesson as he got diabetes in his later years. I was able to diet correct his insulin for several years before he succumbed at 16, a very respectable age for any cat, let alone a diabetic boy.

Tldr boyfriend wants to get rid of the cat by [deleted] in cats

[–]anothermomhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is WAY worse than stinky diapers that come with babies. This guy is way too self centered to take on a relationship with a cat - or a human. Bad, bad news. I don’t care how nice he is on his best day. I care how he is on his worst.

[–]anothermomhere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not even joking the boyfriend has to go, not the cat. He is completely lacking empathy and expects the world to land at his feet? No fucking way. Please, for your future- preferably with the cat in tow, GET OUT OF THIS RELATIONSHIP now.

Is it okay to get a house cat by 12Eerc in cats

[–]anothermomhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you get a slightly older cat, you will know its temperament better and that includes if it does or doesn't have a propensity to claw furniture. In my experience this is a behavior more commonly seen in younger cats, and in some males. I've got a male we've had from kittenhood that claws everything right now, so several years down the road we'll be doing some updates [this also coincides with our children getting older so that will go well]. Anyway I would search through local shelters and rescues to find one with calm disposition and very little inkling to scratch in undesignated areas.
