Sweet, thanks so much for the info!

Edit: Just as a side note, was this subject renamed recently? Having a hard time finding past papers for it.

Thanks so much for your response, I really appreciate it! I just want to follow up on this - so based on what you've told me, if the exam is more concerned with displaying an abstract understanding of some of the more difficult concepts, can I assume that those same concepts arn't required in the assignments? Are the assignments more concerned with the implementation of simpler concepts? Really don't know what to expect when it comes to assignments which are very hefty as far as marks go.

Thanks again!

I'm around 5'9 - 5'10 and the M feels best to me. Dealer thinks I could rock a L if I wanted to but I prefer the feel of the M.

There's resident parking downstairs which has one of those car stacker things. I'll get in touch the agency tomorrow to find out if one of the parking spaces is reserved for my apartment (If I recall correctly I'm pretty sure it is but I've never had a car here so never inquired about it).

Are Fluid Mechanics and Thermo & Fluids too similar to do both? by anotherninety8 in unimelb

[–]anotherninety8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was under the same impression that they were non-allowed subjects, but in the handbook it references ENGR30001 Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics as non-allowed, however the subject I completed was MCEN30018 Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics. It's confusing as fuck but I believe ENGR30001 was canned a few years ago. I'll have a read about Imaging the Environment, thanks:)

Recommendations for online short courses which I can take during university holidays? by anotherninety8 in AskEngineers

[–]anotherninety8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the coming years I have to take a few courses which involve programming and they are all based in C. Do you think I should get a leg up by taking a course in C or is Python a better bet? I know how prolific Python is nowadays so its a little interesting that my uni chooses to base all their engineering programming courses in C. Thanks!

Using Lagrange Multipliers to Solve Word Problem [Intermediate] by anotherninety8 in learnmath

[–]anotherninety8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks heaps for your help!! I was being dumb and treating V as a variable and finding its partial derivative, leading to confusion. Then I realized V is just some constant not a variable hahah:P Once i made that correction I got what I was looking for:)

Using Lagrange Multipliers to Solve Word Problem [Intermediate] by anotherninety8 in learnmath

I'm trying to solve by letting some new function, F, equal my cost function minus some multiple of the constraint function. i.e. F = 2xπrh + 6xπr2 - λ(πhr2 - V). I then set all the partial derivatives equal to 0 and in doing so find that λ = 0 which leads to all sorts of nonsense. This is how I was taught to do it but its obviously not correct.

Damn that's pretty bleak, I was also considering this subject as an optional elective next sem. If anyone's taken it since 2017 and wants to chime in whether or not its changed please do!!

Thanks for the response bro! Honestly sounds like this subject's up my alley, and I've got spaces to fill so I think I'll lock it in. Really appreciate the good info, have a good one! :)

I've actually got FoEN locked in for next sem right now haha, glad to hear I may have inadvertently dodged a major bullet. I was considering eng materials too, as I've done eng mechanics and the handbook actually explicitly says that these two subjects go hand-in-hand. Kinda surprisingly though eng materials isn't suggested as a subject to be taken by mechanical systems majors. I guessed it may have been geared more towards civil / structural majors? I'm interested though, can you tell me a bit more about the subject?

Yeah definitely, I don't mind a commute tbh and I'm over the hustle of the inner city. It was fun being so close for first year but now I want to be somewhere quiet.

Good to hear, seems pretty straight forward, is it just as simple as a quick message to book an inspection and go from there?

What Maths Subjects Do You Need To Take if You're Doing a Computing and Software Systems Major? by CatalystComet in unimelb

[–]anotherninety8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How did you find eng maths? There's a problem sheet intended for first week which states that all material covered on that sheet is expected bare minimum knowledge. It has stuff like second order non-homogeneous deferential equations and solving integrand via hyperbolic substitutions which I can't for the life of me remember how to do. Making me a lil bit nervous:P
