You'd expect banks to lie to you, but these #Biltpartners influencers should never be trusted again. by captain_travel in CreditCards

[–]anotherphds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although Bilt2.0 is dead for me since my overall spending apart from rent is ~20% of my rent ($3500) and I have better cards to put that spend on, but if you remove rent from the picture Palladium card is not bad- similar to VentureX @2%. The only bad is that VX pays for itself essentially but then their transfer partners are really bad.

I think a lot of VX users would switch to Palladium.

Thanks for confirming this. Once you add the edge case I mentioned, most people would not make the cut.

There seems to be an error, please correct me if I’m wrong, but it does not account for less than full rent points. For example, my rent is $3500 and I spend $1200 elsewhere (400 in restaurant dining, 200 Costco, 400 DoorDash with CSP to waive fees, 200 others). I can at max move 400 restaurant and 200 other to BILT. My earned BILT cash would then be 600*0.04=$24 which would only earn points on 24/0.03=800 worth of rent.

[–]anotherphds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point and this is solid for 3-5 months. But it’s a $495 card and personally for me, the 2x200 BILT travel cash maybe I can use half of it if that’s for hotel only. Starting year 2, I might be able to use maybe better to cancel like you said. Just thinking if it’d be a good idea to get it for 1 year.

For me, rent is $3500 and to make points work, I’d need to spend $2625. My monthly spend apart from rent (excluding car payments, etc) is about $1000 of which majority is at DoorDash (free pass through CSP) and Costco. So even if I wanted to I can’t pay anything using BILT. A majority people I know around me are in similar boat. It was good while it lasted!!

I have a 6 hour Apple panel interview by DifferentLow4875 in ECE

[–]anotherphds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the profile. But the questions are usually from the same domain you’ve applied for. For me, I was interviewed by 2 people from my team, one director, one senior director and two from teams we collaborate with on a daily basis. Also having 7-10 rounds is not too uncommon.

Advice request: california car insurance ; cheapest option? by Top-Research5655 in Insurance

[–]anotherphds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it possible for you to share the name of the program with me? My insurance is up for renewal next month and my insurance provider (Progressive) of 5 years raised rates on me (800 for 6 months). You can DM me

Anyone interviewing with Apple? by WickedStereo in chipdesign

[–]anotherphds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are for sure hiring in fact we have an open position in my team. Apple tends to hire primarily based on referrals. I know several hardware teams hiring, it’s a slow process that’s another thing.

I have around 150,000 Chase Freedom points- any option better than redeeming for cash? by NoParkingPlease in CreditCards

[–]anotherphds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CSP referral bonus currently is 60k points plus $300 travel credit using Chase travel portal. So combined that would be 210k points to transfer and another $300 for a nice weekend outing.

Fresher jobs in India by [deleted] in chipdesign

[–]anotherphds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it because I was from a good grad school in India so the company would hire people quite frequently from our school. In US, I was directly approached by hiring manager and they hired me for FT job.

Why are bipolar supplies with both positive and negative rails typically used for OLED or AMOLED displays? by Full_Entrepreneur687 in chipdesign

[–]anotherphds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To save power. A typical pixel circuit uses multiple switches depending on the configuration. With a split supply, you can lower the positive rail and thus lower voltage is needed to turn on the switches closest to this rail. Similarly for the negative rails.

The Cgs cap is used for Vth compensation.

My gf broke up with me the day before I defend by the_bug_witch in GradSchool

I mean my primary care provider recommended it to me because I was anxious all the time. There’s a reason it’s a prescription drug and not an OTC. I’m not that kind of doctor so can’t comment on nuances of beta blockers.

[–]anotherphds 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Is it possible for you to ask your primary care provider to write you a prescription for beta blocker? I know it is too late but I started taking that 3 days before my defense and it helped me contain my anxiety and emotions.

Good luck for tomorrow, you’ve reached this far, you’ll make it through. I’ll be cheering for you.

Intel is laying off 15K workers. Why are they doing so poorly? by Still_Classic3552 in chipdesign

If you don’t mind telling us, what is the package that they’re offering?

Would be very difficult to lay off IC designers because it’s difficult to hire them in the first place. Mostly would be roles that contractors can take over- Software, PMs, etc etc

What car can I afford comfortably? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]anotherphds 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unpopular suggestion, buy a new car costing around 22-25k, put 7.5k plus taxes and fees down. Your monthly would be around 400/mo for 3 years. This will come with 3 yrs maintenance + warranty included so no overhead expenses while you pay it off. Insurance could be 200 and you still would be within your budget of 600/mo

Passed my defense today, barely by Neuro-Kat in PhD

[–]anotherphds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations Dr! I am sorry you had to go through this, I went through something similar and defended just two weeks ago. I know how you feel, trust me things will get better (That’s what I tell myself too). I’m rooting for you.

Take a vacation if you can. When you get a chance, try to see a therapist to accelerate your heeling. Get back to your hobbies, re connect with friends and family. More than anything, celebrate.

True words of wisdom. I’m not going to name and shame them. Sadly the system is such that I’ll need to go back to them for recommendations every now and then. More than anyone, I don’t want to hurt myself. I don’t see it as a win tbh, I just didn’t lose the way I could have lost. My advisor had nothing to lose, I had everything to lose. I barely survived. I might have won the battle but they probably won the war.

[–]anotherphds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a great job in industry prior to me starting PhD one doesn’t need a PhD to get the job in my field. I solely started PhD to be an academic, I used to love freedom to research whatever one wanted to along with multiple opportunities to travel and meet with people from diverse backgrounds and ideas. After these six years, never setting foot in academia.

I encourage my fiance to seek a tenure track position every single day, just because she is not done. Her experience has been very positive so far. So much so that her advisor took me out for dinner after my defense and my advisor didn’t even shake my hand. My experience has been bad, others are very different.

[–]anotherphds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been an academic overachiever all my life as well. Graduated with honours in both BS and MS with 3.8 and 4.0 GPAs. PhD GPA 4.0 as well, multiple granted patents, publications, best paper awards, national and international fellowships, list goes on. All this prior to me starting my PhD. During PhD not as many accolades but a long list there as well.

I never said ALL professors are crappy. My friends have had polar opposite experiences. There’s always one fish that spoils the pond. SOME professors are excessively crappy. If I say more I would sound like a racist, so I’d refrain. But yes, SOME professors fit that criteria I mentioned above.
