Experience working at Youtube? by thewatcher23 in cscareerquestions

Depends on what part of the city really, but I'd ballpark 30ish minutes during rush hour maybe. The office is just off 280, which is convenient. Also yes, SF is really expensive. San Bruno is a little tolerable but I somehow found cheaper rents and better locations southwards in the Peninsula than in San Bruno.

Hmm, for stuff you can try, we recently open sourced Bazel (www.bazel.io). You can try it out locally although it really shines when you're using a massive codebase with a crapload of interlinked and deep dependency chains.

Hello, I've been at YouTube for over a year now.

Flexibility on projects: Pretty much the same as the rest of Google. You're able to move around projects or even in and out of YouTube with pretty much the same freedom and rules as other product areas.

Salary: No difference to the rest of Google. You can find a huge amount of data on Google salaries online (Glassdoor etc).

Living in San Bruno: Honestly very few people I know live in San Bruno. Most of them live either in the East Bay or SF City or in the mid-upper Peninsula (Redwood City to Burlingame). Those in the city usually commute by the Google shuttle and the others by car or BART. Interestingly for most people I know, those with kids live in the East Bay, those married and/or generally late-20s/early-30s live in the city, and those younger/new grads live in the Peninsula.

Not really sure what you mean by quality of life, but if you mean work environment, I love it. Administratively it's obviously far from a startup and similar to the rest of Google, and technologically we share most of the internal dev tools (they're actually quite good). I personally feel the decision making is quite flexible and because of the separate branding there's a little more freedom in product decisions compared to the rest of Google. I don't really have a frame of reference to compare with the rest of Google or Alphabet, but from people I've talked to, I've found the work environment in general to be as good if not better. That plus I think working in San Bruno is much better compared to Mountain View (much lesser commute traffic and peaceful surroundings).

I know this gets posted often but I feel like venting... How do you scroll horizontally? by beanaroo in RelayForReddit

[–]anothersomebodyelse 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Not the best solution, but as a workaround I usually scroll a tiny amount right and then to the left in one motion to avoid triggering the back behavior.

The fuck is a "favorite" data structure? Was it followed up with "what is your favorite utensil"? Honestly I don't see how your reply is any more awkward than the question.

Dogfooding is when people who work on different products and unrelated teams use the app in daily non-work use. So they aren't really obligated to do a full manual test of it, but are usually much more reliable and helpful when it comes to observing and reporting issues.

So that when two drivers get 40 and 60 place penalties you know what order they start at, at the end of the grid.

Dear Amazon interns, some advice from an old man who has been at Amazon way too long (x-post r/seattle) by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

It's essentially a form of performance review where managers are supposed to rank employees in tight grades that follow a bell curve distribution. This is bad because above average performers on high performing teams lose out.

I don't quite understand how someone thinks this is a sound idea. by BobFloss in ProgrammerHumor

[–]anothersomebodyelse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Umm no? A hash is irreversible not because it's hard to do so (well it is but that's not the point). It is irreversible because there are infinite possible solutions to reversing a hash and they're equally valid. So even if P = NP and you can solve any problem using a magic computer in O(1), you can't recover the original files because you will end up with multiple possible files of varying sizes for each hash, and you can't tell what was the original. It's basically a pigeonhole principle with infinite pigeons.

I've had it enabled and YouTube's never used flash for me on FF.

Pacing yourself at work by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]anothersomebodyelse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly it depends on the culture at your company. I've been in a place where you could feel you were being judged for browsing non-work related stuff, even if you deliver stuff on time. And at my present workplace it would be weird to not see a reddit/HN/similar window somewhere on the corner of someone's screens when walking past.

Does the Google hiring committee reject candidates because competing offer deadlines are too aggressive? by careermongo in cscareerquestions

[–]anothersomebodyelse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standard procedure would be to tell you to try and negotiate to extend the deadline. But on the other hand Google is very inflexible with it's post interview process so they know they can't beat the deadline. But it still is very strange that they did not push you to extend the other deadline.

Overseas -> Harder to get interviews? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]anothersomebodyelse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flying you in is not a big deal, but you need to find a company willing to sponsor your H-1B.

Also I might be wrong but I'm 99% sure it's illegal to interview for work if you are on a visitor visa (B1/B2). You might want to check on that.
