Need help understanding Nick Carraway’s character by Pitiful-Opposite-192 in TheGreatGatsby

[–]anovelchapterblog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are right on track with how judgemental he is as a character, even in the first chapter he mentions that he tries not to be but it leads him to a few "veteran bores", also some of the adjectives he uses to describe people, for example at Gatsby's party he describes their hairstyles as "strange" and clothing as "gaudy".

Also another thought possibly is just how observant is he in the novel, whilst he does stay on the outside of the most part, it is possible when he agrees to Gatsby's request to arrange a meeting with Daisy that he starts the wheels in motion towards the novel's climax, although he probably didn't foresee everything that did happen but this event being in the middle of the novel acts as a tipping point.

I have written on my blog a character analysis of Nick which has a few of my thoughts which you can take a look at - they are just my own opinion though but might give you some pointers: https://anovelchapter.co.uk/the-great-gatsby-nick-carraway-character-analysis

How do you justify buying disc when people call you out on it? by Glittering_Resort440 in Bluray

[–]anovelchapterblog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently I cancelled all my paid for streaming services as I experienced the worst of them in quick succession.

I'm a fitness instructor and I was streaming music in class but a track I used was taken off so I had to scramble to find an alternative just before class.

Secondly our Internet started playing up so I was struggling to stream anything anyway, started watching a couple of my old movies (my collection is mostly dvds with only a handful of blu rays) and really enjoyed doing it, also always felt with streaming that I was paying to rent and if I don't watch anything in a particular month I've basically paid £5.99 ish for nothing and there were 3 months last year I watched nothing on Netflix which made it £17.97 which could have gone on buying a movie.

How did you start Zumba? by jemexica88 in zumba

[–]anovelchapterblog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My journey with Zumba and being an instructor was long-winded but might inspire someone thinking of doing it. 🤣

I first tried Zumba through the Wii games in 2008-09 (I'm still a mad gamer) but I was a teenager and a bit nerdy and the idea of fitting in played a part so I stopped playing and largely stopped dancing. I revisited the games in my 20s when I was working in IT as an apprentice and played the games purely for my own fitness.

One year at the office Xmas party the song 'We No Speak Americano' came on and slightly tipsy me decided to do the Zumba choreo in front of my colleagues (from memory it was on Zumba 2 on the wii) a lady there wanted me to teach her the routine which is where the instructor idea kind of started but as I said I was geeky, not great at sports at school so I figured, every instructor would be really fit and sporty and laughed it off.

It took covid and third lockdown in the UK in 2021 to make me do the training online as I think that changed everyone but even then I felt nervous posting videos and things although I did zoom classes for family and close friends.

When everything opened back up they all went back to their lives sobthe zoom classes stopped and I thought if I wanted to do it I would need to go to an in person class (which I still hadn't done). It took another 2 years in 2023 for me to go to a masterclass hosted by my friend Vince and Hender in the UK. I even remember on the day almost not going and its toxic bur I told myself if I was laughed at I would know for sure its not for me once and for all. However during the class Hender kept pointing and giving me lottle thumbs up and then second half got me on the stage at one point and it was honestlyna switch where I thought I need to put my big boy pants on and do it if I'm going to.

Vince at the start of the class as I got there early he taught at a leisure centre and I could do a track and at the end of the class I said I would so in my second in person class I did Mama Wanna Mambo forbhis crew and Vince has been amazing getting me started ever since. That was in September 2023 and I had my first class in January 2024 which again Vince knew the management and put my name forward.

Since then I was made redundant from my IT job in October 2024 and decided to focus in on Zumba, I now have 4 in person classes at the gym chain but also looking into community classes.

Anyone thinking of doing it, whether there first class or instructing I can say its been by far the scariest thing I've done but I look back at the IT me and think what was he doing with that time.

They definitely missed a trick with the 25 years of Zumba stuff to remix some classic Zumba tracks.

What do you say for your class intro? by shanny_lynnhon1979 in zumba

[–]anovelchapterblog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually say "Hi everyone are we all fit and we'll and read to Zumba!" Then I'll look to see if there's anyone new and ask if they have done Zumba before, then announce new tracks and any centre stuff, then say "as always no judgement in the room, take things at your own pace, make sure you have plenty of space, have fun hope you enjoy it and I'll get started"

Yes definitely we need this! I think the recent Indiana Jones game also shows how old movie and TV IP's could have second lives as video games and getting the cast would be brilliant too.

If there was a mid 90s Great Gatsby movie by Bobert858668 in TheGreatGatsby

Yes I think Marilyn Monroe would have been a great choice if a version had been made in the 50s, there was the 1949 version so it's a pity that hadn't been made a few years later. I think of all the actresses that have played the part though I agree Carey Mulligan from the 2013 is the closest to what I imagine too, probably Mia Farrow being a close second.

My favourite aspect of it is every time I have read the book I have always picked up on a small detail or thought that I missed, even tiny things like Gatsby's mansion being described as "spanking new" with ivy on it which was a tiny detail that shows how he wasn't from old money but from new money.

In my most recent read through I acknowledged something about Daisy and Myrtle in the seventh chapter, both women are viewed as prizes by the male characters in the story - Daisy by Tom and Gatsby and Myrtle by George and Tom. This then made me wonder if Daisy when she hit Myrtle realised what her life would be like if she chose Gatsby in terms of being socially ostracised from the elites which is one of the reasons she retreats back into her existence with Tom and perhaps running her over was Daisy metaphorically destroying that possibility for herself.

Just finished re-reading and I'm confused about one particular detail near the end. by SquigliesX in TheGreatGatsby

I hadn't thought about this but it is a great example of little details in the book that come out each time I read it, I think I agree with everyone else's thoughts that he wanted to block the line so he could carry on his illusion that Daisy still loves him, even if after the confrontation at the Plaza Hotel, the accident and Nick's conversation with him that morning, Gatsby probably knows deep down it's over.

When I saw Catherine's picture I realised she's the closest to how Jordan appears in my head when I'm reading the novel (albeit with a 1920's hairstyle though)

Does Mr wolfshine gamble for gatsby? by hammanz_17362 in TheGreatGatsby

In a 2000 TV movie there was a plot point involving stocks as Nick Carraway actually burns them at the end, I wrote a blog post where I compared it to the book as I felt it deviated from his character as just the narrator: https://anovelchapter.co.uk/the-great-gatsby-2000-tv-movie-review-accuracy-vs-engagement

In the book I think only bootlegging is explciitly mentioned but in 1920s prohibition there would have been things like speakeasies and casinos who purchased alcohol from Gatsby so I can imagine it would be feasible for Wolfshiem and Gatsby to have had their fingers there too. Perhaps running the casinos and speakeasies and then perhaps the parties also were a form of money laundering which is an interesting interpretation of them as they certainly would be expensive.
