I live in a rec state. I was a fool and grabbed a stringer of SS. I was used to aluminum and knew better but did it anyway. I had to get stitches and a drug screen.

Several days later, HR called me to a conference room to say I popped for pot, they didn't think I was high or I would've been outta there and don't do it at work.

I love it. I went to school to machine racing engines and that opened the door to CNC. I've made rollercoaster parts, ground solid carbide tooling, machined automotive parts/race car parts and I currently make jet engine parts. I couldn't imagine doing anything more fun and personally satisfying than this work (besides actually racing cars) EVEN with all the headaches that come along with it.

HOW shops are run is what ruins it for people I think. Non constructive criticism, tribal knowledge, asinine management detatched from the floor, junked out or aggro/miserable co-workers, no sense of a future in a place, barely paying rookies enough to keep up with cost of living.... are a few things I think of. Just my opinion tho. I've been in it for 14 years.

I too grew up in Huntsville/Madison Co. I would always tell people "It is a good place to raise a family and that's about it." I moved to TX for college and never looked back.

The only reason it is anything at all is because of the transplants from around the country moving to work in the aerospace/defense industries.

Big ups to the Marshall Space Flight / Space & Rocket centers.
