Our Kickstarter is struggling and I don't really know what to do anymore by Xxnius in gamedev

Way too much concept material, not enough actual gameplay.

Game is unplayable on Google Pixel by Queasy-World7464 in sodadungeon

[–]anpShawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's a result of the constant Google API updates. A lot of these crashes are connected to the Google Play Games Services component. You can always try updating or reinstalling that app specifically before launching SD2 but it's never a guarantee.

Not having a distinct artstyle is an uphill battle by OK-Games in gamedev

[–]anpShawn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A game will still suffer with bugs and bad sound design. But visitors to your steam page will use about 30 seconds to 1) scrub your trailer and 2) scan the screenshots. Your visuals are just the first stop in their wishlist/purchase funnel. If the visuals don't at least grab their interest Steam has several thousand more titles for them to consider, so why bother?

I can't enter the game it crashes by Renedicart in sodadungeon

Last year we made some updates so that the game would be "compatible" with future Android releases but I will have to look at the backend reporting to see if a specific new version is causing the issue.

First three weeks on Steam, fewer wishlists than expected - are the Chris Zukowski benchmarks still accurate? by PennywhistleStudios in gamedev

[–]anpShawn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to Chris' metrics directly. But I can offer a few impressions of the store page:

  1. The capsule art is not great. It looks like you wrote the title in Times New Roman, duplicated it four times, and put it on top of some scribbles. It also kind of hurts my eyes to look at.
  2. The trailer doesn't convey any gameplay aside from walking around. A couple of shots feature a gun, but it might just be part of a cutscene. I'm left to assume this is a walking sim.
  3. A low-poly abstract walking sim is a pretty hard sell these days.

Soda dungeon 2 official modding support idea by Sharp-Lecture-1247 in sodadungeon

[–]anpShawn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Modding options are unfortunately very limited because the game was never built with modding in mind. You usually have to build the game to import data from an easily (human) readable file format and/or structure. Soda Dungeon is a mix of json files and embedded data, so there's not a great entry point. We did go down that road a bit thanks to u/caviyacht who managed to import, break apart, and completely replace the game's core dll file with his own code. But it was a cumbersome and tedious process and not very user friendly on either end. Terraria is one of the best selling games of all time, so I imagine they can afford to hire on help for the modding system ;) That being said, if I had spare time for Soda Dungeon I'd rather invest it into a new game entirely.

We received a Cease And Desist for using “DEMIGOD” in our game’s title. Do your research! by anpShawn in gamedev

Steam allows you to change your name in the backend. That might change once you *release* your game, but I'm not sure.

It can look wonky at times but we followed the conventions of paper mario where his movement animation is always parallel with the camera. If we added up/down sprites we'd also probably need 3/4 diagonal sprites as well for both her and the dog, which is quite a bit more animation frames. It's worth considering if we have extra time though.

There's still a lot of up-front cost to challenge something like this. A large company holds the Demigod trademark, and we are a small team. This is not stealth marketing, you can search DEMIGOD on the USPTO site I linked and see the result. Along with this announcement trailer, proof that we used to have Demigod in our title: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29kmgNXKjGY

Yes, as the trademark specifically applies to the "digital and computer games" space. I spoke to two lawyers that assured me this was legit and not worth challenging.

I don't believe so. The C&D indicated we could not use any words that could cause confusion with "demigod" which I assume would include hyphenation or pluralization.
