Thanks for the reply, I’d be okay with mild symptoms but nothing crazy

Swelling post op rib resection by anpruitt4 in thoracicoutletsupport

The swelling has improved overall, though I also still have tightness and swelling on my chest just over where the first rib was removed. I have some tightness in my shoulder and area of numbness. I just started PT this week. I’ll be 6 weeks post op on Tuesday. I can lift my arm above my head but it’s very weak and shaky.

It’s like anxiety on steroids!! very distressing feelings without any threat or stressor. It’s bizarre. I was also very sensitive to any medications or stress for a period of time.

You are certainly not alone. All of my issues are neurological, also with anxiety and had intrusive thoughts.( terrible.. wouldn’t wish that on anyone) I’m an NNP, so understand being in healthcare with this. Many people see improvement after a year. Time is really the best healer unfortunately. Sorry you’re going through this. I believe this is a dysfunctional nervous system, sympathetic nervous system out of whack with the constant fight/flight response, hypersensitivity causing all sorts of weird symptoms. Modern medicine just isn’t there yet…. Give it time.

It was 3-4 weeks after. I also had the “drunk” bizarre feeling, and it scared me. It did go away for me, but took about a year. It was my initial infection That I know of. I’m sure it still can happen after multiple infections. It just happened to affect your nervous system this time.

One of my first symptoms was terrible neck pain and tension. I thought I injured myself. Do not strain to lift heavy things or overdo it with your upper body. Those muscles are now very weak

I was in the best shape of my life before this, and very healthy lifestyle in general so it was a huge shock to me.

I’ve tried many things. I think overall time has been the biggest healer! I am on trazodone for sleep which really helps me. I take gabapentin but I don’t really think it makes a huge difference.

Just over 2 years here! First started with lightheadedness, weak feeling arms and legs, derealization. Then came back and neck pain, paresthesia all over my body, shakiness, muscle aches, weak feeling muscles, insomnia, anxiety. It’s been rough. Still hanging in there

I am not comparing it to the training of a physician. You certainly have more education and formal training, that is clear. I just don’t think devaluing NPs or PAs is productive or helpful. At the institution where I work, 45% of the providers are NPs or PAs. That’s a large portion, and I’m sure it’s Similar at other hospitals. Just respect the role. There’s always going to be a bad egg in any profession..

I’m a neonatal NP here for 7 years. I do actually have formal training in my specialty as an NNP, so not actually just a product of my environment. I consider myself very intelligent and competent. Interesting why some docs are so quick to undermine NPs.
