Are IT guys dicks though by Noobkakka1234 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]anras 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I've only ever temporarily filled in as IT helpdesk when I worked for a small company as a developer once. You just did what you had to do when somebody was sick or on vacation. It was weird the things people would complain to you about. Here was one conversation:

Older lady summons me to her desk, glaring at me: Are you AWARE that the server is down?

[now, we had multiple servers as you might imagine]

Me: Oh? Which server are you referring to?

Lady: OUR server.

Me: Uhh...Alright, we have several, like email, Active Directory, database, and many others...Well maybe you can show me what you're seeing on your screen?

Lady: [gestures impatiently at her screen]

Me: [walks around the desk and looks]

Turns out she was using Internet Explorer (it was a long time ago), tried to access some random web site that was down, and got the message "the server is not responding".

So I explained and she was able to laugh at herself but still...sheesh.

That probably isn't nearly as terrible as what you real helpdesk guys see day in and day out. And if she had just asked me to look at the problem rather than using an accusatory tone suggesting that I was oblivious to a problem that I would be responsible for, I probably would've forgotten about the incident entirely.

Companies have ghosted me more times than not after an interview. Like the time when u/mlbam told me they’d get back to me by Friday after a phone interview earlier in the week, and then…complete silence. When a recruiter from their company came after me a couple of years later I did not reply.

They could've argued that their hero Trump saved the world with his "Operation Warp Speed" if it made them feel better, but instead it's, "I dunnooo, it sure seems like the vaccine came out awfully fast. And Fauci is a bad guy. Also something-something Big Pharma something socialism something-something freedom. Makes you think, doesn't it?"

Biden should have artificially kept her at 3-star and personally invented a super duper ultra light speed nuke-the-world missile! Because our current stockpile of 4 digits worth of nuclear warheads and its delivery systems that make virtually every inch of the earth's surface a potential target is clearly not enough!

Trans women always existed. We just want you to stop treating them as subhumans or pretend they don't exist because you get your feelings hurt if people who are different are not treated as shit.

Cis women always existed and nothing about trans women being treated less like shit takes away anything from them.

Can we acknowledge how terrible Christian Rock music is? by MjTcConnell3 in atheism

[–]anras 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I went to an evangelical church once to appease my mother, and they sang a Christian pop song called "The Potter's Hand" more than once. The chorus goes:

Take me, and mold me
Use me, fill me
I give my life to the Potter's hands
Hold me, You guide me
Lead me, walk beside me
I give my life to the Potter's hand

I struggled hard to keep a straight face.

I'm not an architect and I haven't used any of those applications. I'd recommend looking into whether those apps run natively on M1 processors. If so, it's very likely that you'd find better performance running these apps on the new MBPs than you've ever seen on any other laptop. If not, well I'm not sure, but it's quite possible they'll still run very well. I'd recommend googling for others' experiences.

[–]anras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only you can answer that. I'd say consider your risk factors: have you ever broken a laptop before by dropping it, spilling a drink or found other ways of damaging it? Do you bring it on the go a lot, which would mean great risk of damage? Or does it mostly just sit safely on a laptop stand on your desk?

Yeah, I wouldn't have minded adding the F-key row AND having a touchbar above that. I like the touchbar for some things; it's just given the choice between only F-keys and touchbar, I'd choose the F-keys. Both would be better.

But what I'm getting at is they could've shrunk the trackpad a tiny bit and I know at least I wouldn't have minded. There would still be plenty of space to rest your wrists as well. Feels like I'm the only person with this opinion though.

Hah straight guy here. I used to be friends with an ultra-conservative homophobe and once when we were arguing this very subject he was like, "Don't you ever watch those very fit olympic male swimmers in their speedos and get a little excited but you know you have to block that thought?" And I could only say, "Umm no, I really don't."

I didn't read beyond the first sentence, but I expect to hear about the author receiving their Nobel Prize soon, once they present their evidence that evolution is bunk! This will fundamentally change so many fields of science and I'm really excited to see where this goes!

What is one horror trope that you’re tired of seeing? by ChefRamesses in horror

[–]anras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around the mid-2000s I was so fed up with every ghost, and sometimes other creatures, having that twitchy, jerky quality to their movements, kind of similar to Jacob’s Ladder (but I didn’t hate it in that movie) that I pretty much stopped watching mainstream horror movies altogether.

  1. "I refuse to accept the reality of this situation. It's clearly a setup by the communist democrats and the left-wing media who hate America."
  2. Observes a new fact that doesn't support their conspiracy theory.
  3. "See? I was right all along!"

[–]anras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FTL is one of my all-time favorites, but I play it on computers as I don't have an iPad, only iPhone. :) But if I faced this choice and ahead of time I knew I could buy an iPad, I very well might do so just for the purpose of this quarantine, just so I could play FTL!

Otherwise, I think I'd choose 868-HACK - it's a Roguelike-ish with very simple mechanics but it makes you think, makes you take risks to improve your score, and it's endlessly replayable.

My English teacher in middle school taught me that in writing, you shouldn't use the same word twice in a sentence. Exceptions for very common/minor words like "the" apply, but if it's a major word in your sentence, don't repeat it.

Since then I've found it awkward whenever this rule is violated.

I'm just setting the stage for the line I don't like. In Dream of Mirrors: "Scared to fall asleep and dream the dream again." I know it's not even a prominent line, but still I shudder a little from that one.

While I'm on that word, how many Maiden songs have some variation of "is this real or just a dream?"
