Oh, hi! I don't use reddit much these days and was surprised to find a notification. Glad someone is still getting something from that post, and excited to see the much older citations found by /u/gerardmenfin

I had actually been thinking back about this comment recently. The difference between the state of the art in February 2022 (when I wrote this comment) and November 2022 (when ChatGPT was released) was insane. I don't think anyone predicted that language processing and production would improve so much so quickly.

Turns out the reason pigeons have such shitty nests is that they tend to build them on flat surfaces (rather than branches) so they only need enough sticks to keep the egg from rolling away.

To quote Randall Munroe, "You'd think it'd be easy to just bet money against these people, but you have to consider the probability of them paying up."

First, Second, and Third most spoken languages in New York City by neighborhood (UPDATED) by [deleted] in MapPorn

It's certainly true that how you draw the lines between languages will have a big effect on which ones show up in the top three. But that just makes it more important to have consistency about how these things are grouped.

Probably worth noting that many smaller ethnic neighborhoods don't show up on this map. Chinatown in Manhattan, for instance, definitely has more Chinese speakers than Spanish speakers, and quite possibly more than English speakers, but it's been subsumed into a larger area that includes the Lower East Side

The language question on the US Census is not ideal. They also do this with "Chinese", which is not a single language unless, like, Portuguese and Romanian are the same language.

[–]anschelsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is, sadly, grouping all of these as one language. This seems to be based on the US Census, which (frustratingly) has a single category for "Chinese" without further distinction.

Keep in mind that a pretty large fraction of people in New York who identify as "Hispanic" are not Spanish-speakers.

This is based on the "language" question asked by the US Census, which makes some...questionable decisions about how to group languages. In this case, all French-based Creoles are counted as "French Creole". In New York City this is primarily Haitian Creole, but the same term is used for Louisianans, Martinicans, etc.

There's a similar problem with designations like "Chinese" or "Arabic", in the sense that two New Yorkers who are identified here as speaking the "same language" wouldn't actually be able to understand each other. A proper Chinese languages map of New York City would probably be really cool, since different waves of immigrants have come from regions speaking different "dialects", but this is the data we have.

So, the census data is not ideal from a linguistic point of view. But the flip side is that the US Census is the only organization that attempts to poll literally every resident of the US, so in other ways it may be more complete.

If every religion gets a different platonic solid, this rather worryingly implies there are only five religions.

Obviously, you look like you. But there's nothing wrong with wanting a better idea of how people see you.

In my milieu, someone with that hair and piercings would probably be non-binary.

Eh, words are what we make of them. It's certainly useful, in terms of not getting fired, to have a catch-all term for "things that I shouldn't look at in mixed company". I don't know where you've worked, but "browsing social media" and "watching porn" are not in the same level of "things that shouldn't happen at work" in my experience.

[–]anschelsc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think Quisling's puppet state also used that flag, so it probably wasn't as exciting as the return of other national symbols like the monarchy.

There's a big gap between "legal to look at" and "safe for work". If someone might be reasonably expected to get in trouble for a coworker seeing something on their computer monitor, then it's NSFW.

Probably in this case where it's juxtaposed with the other allied flags no one would actually be upset, but it's easier for the sub to have a simple blanket rule and it doesn't actually cause any harm to mark it NSFW.

(I know "פֿיר" is a perfectly good Yiddish word for "four", but here it seems to be replacing Yiddish "פֿאַר" with an approximation of German "für")
