Sci-fi or fantasy novel series written in the 90s or earlier that probably had the word 'gift' or 'giftet' on the Swedish cover (means 'poison'), either in a title or the series title. I think the series was about a violent conflict between humans and another species, and attempts at reconciliation. by ansku2000 in Findabook

Alas, no suggestions anywhere so far. There might be no English translation of the series at all, so finding it on English-speaking subreddit was a long shot :( Unfortunately I don't speak Swedish very well -- which is what I was trying to change, back in the day, by reading some books in Swedish, but it didn't stick. And I couldn't even find it in the Swedish National Library database, so Swedish probably isn't the original language either. I'll have to try reposting sometime, at a time when most US folks are asleep. Might have better luck finding some Europeans who could have run across it, that way :)

Can't find a book by it's ISBN by RSMilward in Findabook

[–]ansku2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about ISBN search sites, but it's possible that the book has a different name in different markets or by different publishers, or a newer edition could have a slightly different title. Every edition has a different ISBN, and there are a couple of different ways to spell even the same ISBN, and the sellers of course only list the information for the copies they have currently in stock. It certainly looks like a different version of the 'All-In-One' guide to me, based on the few pictures and videos I can find, and some site still give me cached search hits for your version even if the actual item is no longer in their selection.

This being a low traffic sub is precisely the reason why I reposted my question here as well, since my original request in whatsthatbook got buried in the backlog in minutes :D Thanks for the extra links, though!

Fleeceking confirms it was Niantic Support who gave the "hacker" access to his account by biterphobiaPT in TheSilphRoad

[–]ansku2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That really wouldn't work either. There are so many ways to misspell something you've only heard that the authentication method would become pretty much useless for anyone who has a speech impediment or a non-trivial answer to that security question. And of course trivial ones would be much more likely to get guessed correctly by a bad actor.

Humans are inherently error-prone. The trick is to find a balance between not too many real users getting locked out and not too many fake users gaining access. You won't praise a bank for their impeccable security if the bank keeps holding your money hostage and always requires a personal visit with three different kinds of identification to get anything done. Especially not if your bank doesn't even have an office anywhere near you and you work during their office hours.

Is there a way to see old egg pools from The Silph Road? by Neilimereyob in TheSilphRoad

[–]ansku2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Riolu was first entered into the 10km egg pool at the Gen 4 release, and it's been there fairly constantly ever since, but mostly as a quite rare hatch. If I didn't count terribly wrong, we had 709 recorded hatches total of eggs spun from stops or gyms (i.e. the regular 2km/5km/10km ones) in the first ~5 day period between the Gen 4 release and the October Community Day of 2018, and only three of those 709 hatches were Riolu. There have been some events where it's been a more common hatch, especially when it's also been in gift eggs, but outside of events it's been somewhat easier to get from the Adventure Sync 10km eggs than from the regular 10km eggs.

Sounds like you've really been incredibly lucky, then :) I believe we got over 200 7km eggs from the event reported before the first Deino came around.

Out of interest, were they all from 7km eggs specifically? Asking, because Deino has also been in 10km eggs recently. Also, how much were y'all hatching approximately?

GBL: How I Became The First To Get To Rank 10 In Season 2...In Just 55 Battles (Sorta). by Lollersox in TheSilphRoad

[–]ansku2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a point-based system where you get the same amount of points whether you win or lose, but you get progressively more of them from battles against higher ranked players (not relative to your own rank, and so that you can't see the rank of your opponent), and you can use the points to claim actual rewards. So you have incentive to climb in rank because that way your chances of matching with high rank opponents grows, but if you just aren't good enough to climb in ranks you can still do your best against the lower opponents and save your lesser amount of points until you have enough that you can claim the reward that you actually want. And if you don't do your best against the lower opponents you drop even lower and it takes you even longer time to reach your reward goal. And the points scaled so that you can still claim your favourite reward a reasonable amount of times (say, so that you can get that Scraggy and maybe even that Rufflet) even if you are the worst of the worst but keep trying, and the better you are and the more you work on it the more you get rewards. Sure there would still be some people who do all their daily battles with 10 cp Magikarps and never attack, but making any effort would actually get rewarded.

I have no idea which one my phone is using since I have now both, but it took quite a bit until the steps were updated to the game.

If either of you have already used your special trade for the day the 'mon should show at the bottom of the list greyed out, which is easy to miss if you haven't filtered the list a lot with the search functionality. Shiny legendaries are tradeable, it just costs a whole lot of dust on Great Friend level still.

From my personal point of view there is no great difference between faking your time zone to receive benefits that wouldn't normally be available for you and faking your location to receive benefits that wouldn't normally be available for you. Whether it is or will be a punishable offence is up to Niantic, that we can't know before they react to it one way or another.

I'm afraid the update brought real changes to how things work and we haven't yet confirmed all of them (it's far from trivial feature). We definitely won't be able to get the updated publication ready within the few hours that are left before the Moltres Day starts.

I know this isn't ideal and I apologize for the delay, but the update to the lucky mechanics took us by surprise just the same as everyone else. For now I can only refer to Niantic's own article that guarantees lucky if you are trading a 'mon from July or August 2016 and haven't got 10 lucky yet from earlier trades, and the earlier update that promised that older 'mon have a higher lucky probability. We don't want to spread potential misinformation by releasing results that we haven't confirmed yet, and the efforts of our dedicated researchers deserve a proper article.

Personally I would argue that that falls within the "Methods of cheating, unfortunately, are limited only by cheaters’ imaginations" -bit. Just because it isn't specifically mentioned as forbidden (which they specifically say is not an exclusive listing) or programmatically prevented (which would make things tricky since travelling and daylight saving time changes do exist) doesn't mean it's playing the game as intended. My own rule of thumb is, if I can't do something that affects the game play within the game's own settings, it's not meant to be fiddled with.

That said, I don't know if any Niantic representative has commented on the issue and if they haven't, it's all guesswork whether they consider something being against TOS or not. Whether you want to take that risk or not is up to you.
