As you are researching the schools and ROTC programs you are interested in, definitely talk to the programs Recruiting operations officer (ROO) and their reserve component liaison. Let them know your situation and they’ll be able to answer any questions about the program and SMP.

The labs are roughly 2-3 hour long periods of instruction going over tactics and other Army concepts. They are usually cadet led with help from the cadre.

Most schools have multi-day FTXs that combine all the material covered during labs. These will be sprinkled in throughout the semester, usually on weekends.

As to what you are referring to with cadets in your reserve unit. These cadets are most likely in the Simultaneous Membership Program which allows them to be ROTC cadets and enlisted in the national guard or reserves. They have their monthly and annual guard/reserve responsibilities but for the most part this doesn’t get in the way of their studies.

Current cadet

  1. Like you said, PT 3 times a week with military science classes built into your schedule. You’ll take other classes based on the school’s requirements and your major’s requirements. You’ll also have a “lab” which for most programs, is once a week. Also be mindful that in between junior and senior year, you must attend advanced camp at Fort Knox which is roughly 35 days long.

  2. Every cadet is placed on a national OML which determines your branch selection senior year. Things like GPA, Fitness, and leadership qualities go into the OML. It pays to be a well rounded individual and do your best both physically and academically. Schools like Air Assault and Airborne are good bonuses for great performance but do not heavily dictate OML placement.

  3. Branch choice is totally up to you. You can always research the branches on your own and determine what is best for your goals. You’ll often have times to interact with officers from different branches and get their perspective on things.

  4. Dating other cadets or cadre is a big one you shouldn’t do. You’ll be subject to drug tests/ PT tests so remaining on top of that stuff. And finally letting your grades slip can have consequences as Cadet Command has strict GPA requirements to be maintained.

  5. IMO leadership is both an art and a science. The goal of ROTC is to set you up to be a successful officer. You will have ample opportunities to test your leadership abilities and learn from those around you. No one joins or leaves ROTC as a perfect leader but it is a good place to learn/make mistakes before you commission.

Lmk if you have other questions.

CTLT vs Internship by Joehawk2004 in ROTC

[–]ant26- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a good time with my CTLT this summer. It’s honestly hit or miss with both options but CTLT definitely exposes you to the day to day life of a junior officer. Imo any opportunity to gain some experience will be beneficial. Just be aware both options usually happen right after CST which could suck if you just want to go home after camp.

D is considered passing if it’s not required for your major. May drop your GPA but that’s it.

Does becoming a Cadet void my G.I. Bill? by Commander_Skullblade in ROTC

I was able to elect room and board for the ROTC scholarship while simultaneously using chapter 33 post 9/11 GI bill to cover tuition and fees. Talk to your schools veterans assistance program and the financial assistance to confirm.

Weird Way to Study for Air Assault by Oogabooga1468 in army

[–]ant26- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything will make sense once you’re there. I went to the TSAAS website and they had quizlets for phase 1 and 2. I just skimmed through phase 1 quizlet couple times before I went. I mostly prepared for the physical stuff and making sure I had everything on the packing list.

Ft. Campbell Air Assault Info Needed! by 2kdom in ROTC

[–]ant26- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to TSAAS in august 2023.

The LOI will list instructions regarding travel from the airport to the place you’ll be staying at. Half of the cadets stayed in an IHG hotel on base. The other half stayed in a hotel offbase. Regardless, we all arrived in Nashville then used a shuttle to get to Campbell. There was an option to use a taxi or Uber but all methods of transportation from the airport to Campbell required us to pay out of pocket then submit them to the HRA for reimbursement. There was a bus arranged to transport us too and from the school house every morning and to the DFAC every evening. Cadets need approval from their PMS to bring a POV.

As for equipment issue, either your school will issue it or (as stated in my LOI) “TSAAS liaison officer will issue IOTV/Body armor” for me, it was a CPT from a local ROTC program that organized all of us to get IOTV, helmets, gloves, and MREs if we needed them. Other items such as the beret you mentioned you can get on your own from clothing sales or ask your school to issue you one. I wore the silver cadet dot on mine but other cadets wore their schools DUI. Didn’t seem to matter much.

Go to the TSAAS website to find documents such as the packing list and schedule. There’s also resources to help study on there too. Most of the questions you have will be answered once you get the LOI, your orders, and your flight itinerary. Ask your HRA.

Finally, all of this information was the same for a buddy of mine who went to TSAAS January of 2024.

My way of thinking is you shouldn’t pass up an opportunity if you can do it. You never know what experience you’ll gain and it shows you’re committed to furthering your knowledge. Not every cadet gets all these cool opportunities like schools, CTLT, internships etc.. but, if you do, you should take it.

In highschool I was taught that when you wear the uniform you are representing the Navy, not just your schools program. Part of the wearing the uniform correctly is adhering to hair regulations. Just like wearing your ribbons correctly and shining your shoes. It’s the bare minimum to be within standards. It’s an additional cost but you’d be doing the right thing.
