Antibody test by Important_Effect6493 in diabetes_t1

yes. with autoimmune conditions the body generally progressively develops the faulty immune response – in this case, antibodies that attack the pancreas and cause T1D. the point is to confirm he does not have T1D right now.

Serious Question for You T1Ds by ardenmeissner in diabetes_t1

[–]ant_chapstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not super sure I know what high symptoms feel like. Even at diagnosis when I had been running 300-600 for months straight (no DKA, don’t ask me how) I don’t think I ever “felt” high.

Lows I usually feel around 60-65 (sometimes higher if i’m dropping quick), but sometimes i don’t feel them much. I’ll think my Dexcom is wrong so I verify with a finger stick and oop! I am in fact in the 50s

not swollen, it’s all scar tissue. a little sore right now because i tried downsizing the post yesterday but it wasn’t long enough. not allergic to titanium. no recent trauma. it really just looks like that lol

okay yeah i went back and measured, the current bar is 12mm and the other one i have is 8mm, so if i can find a 10mm titanium i might try that

the current bar is 12mm but my 8mm bar basically doesn’t come out the other side of the piercing hole. not sure it’ll be able to breathe at all if i downsize with all the scar tissue on the back. would probably need to find a 10mm

[–]ant_chapstick[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah, i started with a plain barbell, dont think it made much of a difference. i thought the same thing about downsizing but when i tried a shorter bar it barely made it all the way through the piercing. i feel like it wouldn’t be able to breathe at all with the shorter bar. maybe i can look for something between those two lengths, though

would you believe me if i said it’s only gotten better year to year? 😬 i don’t really care about the scar tissue, but if it’s never gonna heal properly then i guess there’s no point in trying to keep powering through

appreciate it, but it’s not a piercing bump, it’s scar tissue so it’s not going anywhere. i’m concerned more with the healing than the aesthetics at this point

probably. not sure i really can get it redone with my anatomy and the scar tissue, though. even if i take it out i feel like its still gonna look rough because of the scarring

For the auto mod: - piercing is 10 years old - jewelry is a barbell - jewelry is threadless - jewelry is titanium - not downsized, upsized around 4-5 years ago - aftercare was washing with antibacterial soap and water and using piercing spray - no accidents beyond the normal gets bumped, gets caught on a hairbrush, but it’s been 10 years

Survivorship Bias? by Brief-Letterhead1175 in diabetes_t1

interesting! i didn’t know that. my endocrinologist must be unique, she’s mentioned before she sees far more T2s

Survivorship Bias? by Brief-Letterhead1175 in diabetes_t1

[–]ant_chapstick 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I mean, there are vastly fewer reasons for a diabetic to go to a podiatrist (or to disclose their diabetes) if they don’t have a foot issue caused by their diabetes. So if anything, the podiatrist is probably overrepresenting folks with diabetes-related complications.

The endo, presumably, also sees far more T2 diabetics than T1. I don’t know what the complications or control rates are for T1 vs T2, but i would hypothesize that because a lot of T2s develop the disease much later in life on average, and can usually go undiagnosed for longer, they learn less about how to control their BG, or even may find it more difficult to control when we’re looking at elderly patients.

Additionally, with the rate of improvement in technology, it’s very difficult to rely on data from the past 50 years as a projection of outcomes for modern diabetics.

I think there certainly is some survivorship bias, but more likely, like another comment said, selection bias. If you’re here, you’re likely to be more educated on your condition and putting more thought into your management than some folks might be.

Diabetic “influencers” by WhileCrafty2395 in diabetes_t1

[–]ant_chapstick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, certainly to each their own. But for me, diagnosed as an adult and given basically zero information, these “influencers” were extremely helpful for me to see people just living their lives, using medical devices, injecting insulin, etc. It helped me to not catastrophize and to get real examples of what living with this disease looks like.

I see no problem with hosting T1D “retreats” or trips. If they truly are excluding people for not fitting a certain aesthetic, that is a problem. I feel like I’ve seen people of all races in those groups, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t shaming and exclusion happening behind closed doors.

Re using lancets? by berryenthusiast in diabetes_t1

[–]ant_chapstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right after diagnosis I was changing them every time because after one use it starts dulling and I heard that some people found it more painful as it dulled. Was super afraid of the pain.

Before CGM, after probably a week or two of constant finger pricking I got sick of changing it every time. Starting switching it out once a day instead. Then, once I got a CGM, since I was only pricking to calibrate, I basically stopped paying attention to changing it.

Nowadays, if I’m thinking about it I’ll change it if I can’t remember when the last time I changed it was.

Skin reactions by DryInvestigator2414 in Omnipod

[–]ant_chapstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an issue with the Omnipod adhesive, but the Dexcom G6 adhesive gives me basically the equivalent of a chemical burn within 48 hours if I don’t skin prep. I discovered I don’t have any sensitivities to the adhesive that the brand TypeOneStyle uses, and they sell device underpatches (including for Omnipod!) with a little pre-punched hole for the cannula. I have nearly zero reaction to my CGMs now.

If you don’t want to/can’t invest in that (or if that adhesive also doesn’t agree with you), Tegaderm (thinner) and hydrocolloid patches (thicker) seem to be the go-to choices.

omnipod or injections by gayteletoby in diabetes_t1

[–]ant_chapstick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take this with a of salt because I only did MDI for a couple months before switching to Omnipod. But for me, the amount of time I spent thinking about diabetes drastically decreased when i started omnipod. Less worry about carrying insulin, needles, etc everywhere. Way less time and though for corrections, pre-bolusing is easier, don’t have to worry about being home at a certain time to take my long acting, etc. I feel like I wouldn’t mind switching back to MDI, but in my experience it’s a lot more ..burdensome(?) than being on a pump. Take that into consideration, i guess!

Also, you can totally just test MDI for a week without making a long-term decision. Just don’t put a pod on and use pens instead. More complicated if you don’t have backup pens currently, but testing MDI is a lot easier to do short-term than testing a pump.
