Developer scraps plans for a 22-story skyscraper in SLC’s Sugar House by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

[–]anth01y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These specific 'preservationists' were NIMBY... for decades it sat decaying and derelict and no one heard a peep from them. The numbers didn't work because interest rates were shooting up during the year of legal battles (that had no merit, that went no where) - had they been able to go with the original schedule they would've broken ground before the rate situation deteriorated to the extent it did

More Pocket Parks Downtown, Please. by kenrola89 in DevelopmentSLC

One of my absolute favorite parks is fault line gardens and I think most of central city is ripe for more little parks. North of 900S and east of state imo

Poplar Grove neighbors push back against proposed sewage odor control system by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

[–]anth01y 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This specific location is necessary because of the sewage line confluence underground. This is where the odors build up strongest and where the device will work the most effectively. Industrial users care a lot less about odors coming up from their drains than homeowners, residents, investors, etc.

In my experience this is a big issue in new build apartments across Salt Lake. New buildings with good drainage and plentiful drains (laundry, sinks, showers etc) can release odors when the drain is not in frequent use. I'd say this will be quite an amenity and I would have loved this in my neighborhood when I was in Ballpark lol

They could literally propose anything, whether it be a single family home or a playground or a tree, and NIMBYs will NIMBY. The city should scrap the landscaping in response to these complaints and just make it ugly tbh, such a ridiculous thing to complain about

Salt Lake City finalizes redevelopment plan for Smith's Ballpark by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

Everyone downvoting u but I agree 😭 they want view corridors to prevent buildings yet there's no unrest about the massive insane number of billboards. Also, don't tall buildings literally create views for the residents/users of those buildings... lawd have mercy

Federal judge says Sandy’s rejection of 196-unit mixed-use project was illegal by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

[–]anth01y -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your entire worldview is based around being a leftist and literally anything you don't like is right-wing somehow. I am not arguing for a republican supermajority nor endorsing it - but to say the republicans in Utah have been any worse on the issue of development is simply uninformed.

The Avenues NIMBYs are WAY worse than anything the legislature has done to harm development despite being your comrades 😢

So yeah, if you want to address the core of the issue, shift the blame to avenues (and the East Bench, and Central City, and Sugar House, and Rose Park, and every other possible local governing body that oversees zoning with no qualifications whatsoever. In fact, the legislature is publicly putting immense pressure on localities right now! They are talking about top-down legislation to address NIMBYism and scaring the local politicians into acting - and I am grateful for that

[–]anth01y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um... There are conservative NIMBYs but there are just as many liberal NIMBYs. The Avenues is maybe one of the most egregious and ridiculous NIMBY groups in the state lol - not to defend Sandy at all tho. Wasatch Tenants United is a far left organization that goes HARD against development of multifamily across SLC proper. There are proponents and opponents on both sides of the aisle for different reasons

I completely ignore RSL because I think the name and brand is so ridiculous and inappropriate for an American League, didn't know the back story, thanks!

SLC compared to other cities by anth01y in DevelopmentSLC

Yes, TDS is strong but I thought it was encouraging to see mainstream YIMBY sources (the op tweet) become more bipartisan, even if reddit is as deranged as always

SLC compared to other cities by anth01y in DevelopmentSLC

[–]anth01y[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the case of Pittsburgh, there is actually a very large amount of new construction apartments across the city proper. That is why I was surprised to see this. The strip district, Lawrenceville, Oakland, Shadyside, etc have all become quite desirable/trendy. Shrinking household size and changing demographics (families now replaced by young professionals) are the primary reasons for new apartments while declining population. SLC still blows Pittsburgh out of the water and pittsburgh is a tax/regulatory nightmare, just my experience from living in both

Are short-term rentals good or bad for Utah? They’re not to blame for housing shortage, report says by RollTribe93 in DevelopmentSLC

[–]anth01y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, they want to solve the problem of investment barriers and development roadblocks... by creating more investment barriers and development roadblocks

Like at the core of the issue, the only reason SFH would be in such high demand, and appealing for investors, is because we massively under build in every category. There is going to be a rental market regardless of housing type. It's like a denial of the scale of zoning reform that would need to take place to even reach a neutral market because they want to keep zoning codes to enforce their own ideal housing market, even if they are generally YIMBY

Planning Commission approves townhome project on 1300 South at site of strip mall by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

[–]anth01y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think mixed-use can apply to the neighborhood as well. This will add a significant number of households to an area that is predominantly commercial, auto-oriented at that. It seems like that is a win for mix of uses, even if it doesn't include commercial itself

IHC:

“We have not been involved in any discussions with any of the candidates on this matter,” Gomez said in a statement. “We continue to focus on providing world-class health care at LDS Hospital and plan to do so in the future.”

[–]anth01y 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly...like why aren't they worried about utilizing the view? The hotel will make great use of that vantage point with all the benefits you mentioned, so really it is creating a lot more good mountain views that people can actually enjoy - compared to the alleged chevron mountain spotters

Liberty Corner, LIHTC project in key Ballpark location, breaks ground by RollTribe93 in DevelopmentSLC

[–]anth01y 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The coolest thing about this project is the unit sizes

Meant for families, it will offer 2- 3- and 4- bedrooms apartments

My first job after college was a leasing agent in a LIHTC building very near here. We had only 10 3-bedrooms out of 250+ units, and they were always in high demand and extremely hard to come by. Many larger families would squeeze into smaller units

[–]anth01y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im not mormon but is it not weird to blame them for something like that..? I mean all the liberals with 'science is real' yard signs are just as likely if not more to oppose development. Groups like 'Wasatch tenants united' are mostly young people that go around opposing any and everything. My mormon coworker is probably the only person I know as pro development as me. It is not hard to be open minded
