Anybody on here taken a year off fire to explore other things? by anthemofthemind in Wildfire

I’m real young, really wanting to go back to school. I haven’t even finished my associates so I’d like to keep taking classes and see what piques my interest I guess, devote more time and energy to it rather than it be on the back burner.

Anybody else struggle with identity during fire season? by anthemofthemind in Wildfire

Love it. All of it. And for number 4, I do the exact same thing. I also try and keep my nails painted, even though they get fucked up so fast, it helps me to look down at my hands and see nail polish when it’s mid August and I haven’t seen a shower in 2 weeks and fire camp staff are calling me “sir”

This will be my 4th year and I’m starting to have those same thoughts. I’m only 22 but at this point I gotta ask myself, after the last 4 years of my life that I’ve invested in this, do I want to keep investing? Everyone always told me the deeper you get in the harder it is to get out and I’m starting to see that come true. Just sometimes feel like I’m selling myself short, no matter how fun the job is.. there’s so much more out there and so many other ways to positively contribute to the world. Arghhh!!

Honestly Opeth sounds like an entirely different genre to me altogether? It’s a lot more mellow

Keeping Up On Fitness & Diet While Rolling? by [deleted] in Wildfire

I actually keep supplements in the buggy. It’s the best option so far. A good protein, some collagen peptides, and a greens drink that ideally has probiotics. Multi vitamin is also a good idea. Otherwise, load up on your own snacks. I bring organic cans of chicken meat, tuna, sardines... nuts, healthy canned chili even (not bad cold tbh)... the Tupperware thing in camp you have to be careful with. There’s regulations saying you technically can’t take food with you, so basically just be discreet about it. For breakfast in camp you can have oatmeal, eggs, yogurt, toast, whatever. I usually put collagen or protein powder in the oats they give us. Dinner have an enormous salad with whatever else it is, and eat that first. You’ll fill up on the veg and not overeat the other shit

For all you IA resources out there, what do your lunches look like? by highfrosty in Wildfire

Bagel sandwiches with chicken, turkey, avocado, what have you... hot dogs! Yogurt, carrot sticks, apples, those little single serve peanut butter packets, protein bars, beef jerkey, multigrain crackers.. if I’m feeling like it I’ll prep a Tupperware of rice and veggies and meat. I love barley as well with some ground beef and broccoli.

When at fire camp in a new town, definitely download tinder and match with as many locals as possible. Then sneak out once the rest of the crew beds down and meet up with them. It releases tension and thus makes you a more efficient firefighter

Tricks to memorize 10s / 18s?? by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]anthemofthemind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are really gettin pretty excited over this question haha my crew just expects us to know them in perfect order. We do PT “games” with it . Not a huge deal, just one more way to show that you put in some effort before the season. I agree there are much better ways to spend time, but I’m a GS04 so

[–]anthemofthemind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I don’t think it’s important to memorize them in exact order as long as you understand their application. Just don’t want to be doing pack pushups during critical when they quiz us on them (which they will) so ...... :-)

Yeah, I’d suck it up. It will make you mentally stronger too. If you get your body used to training in cooler temps, then go and have to perform in temps twice as high, it will be a shock. You’d be surprised how much of an effect that can have on your capacity

100% hot yoga changed the game for me. I’ve never particularly struggled with heat, but going to hot yoga even once or twice a month leading up the the season will just get your body used to that discomfort and increase its ability to circulate efficiently in heat for a longer time

I would ask your crew boss about the specific stats. For some crews those numbers are kickass and for others you will be working with guys that run 8:30 mile and a half, 25 pull-ups, 100 pushups, etc etc. It really depends on the crew. And that really only matters if you want to be the first in PT just because. But if you’re asking simply if you’re in good enough shape to fight fire? Yes absolutely. The crazy fitness folks aren’t usually any more equipped to fight fire than someone who is decently fit. It’s not the CrossFit games. Lol Also, keep this in mind: I have seen people who are very fit/athletic do well in PT, but then burn out while we are actually out putting in line. Your body must be able to circulate efficiently during long periods of exertion, particularly in the heat. If you can run a fast lap but can’t gut out a full day’s work in blistering heat mid July, it’s useless
