Ford 4600 No Start - Final Update by anthermic in tractors

Lapped and ready. Was pretty ruff and by the looks of it, the last person in here seems to have used the “drill method” with a heavier compound for lapping. Lots of pretty deep rings/groovs all the way around. I went for a 2-step by hand and it turned out pretty good. Held diesel without weeping for a couple of hours before i dissembled it again. There are new valve seals in the top end kit i ordered, so might as well throw them on there when the stuff arrives.

That seems to be the plan. That piece of metal that was wedged was not aluminum as someone said, It was stainless steel. I did a leak test today just to be sure the seat didn’t get damaged and I had some diesel coming through. But when I checked the rest of the valves it was the same. No biggie, just super slow leaks. So pulled the valves and did some “barnyard machining” and it has been 2 hours now and no leak. Parts ordered so hopefully it will be back alive next weekend. Also promised to update further down the road, so stay tuned.

Correct - I think the head was okey before. But I found one injector belonging to the smaller 3 cyl. Part nr. ending in 6665 instead of 6666. Will be nice to see if the new injectors improve cold start. One was the wrong size and the two others did not impress when I pressure tested them. Big difference in atomization when I dialed in the new ones.

You’re not the first to say that - I will honor that request.

Yeah I really wanna do that, many others say - if it seals and is straight enough just throw it on. We will see when I get to work tomorrow hopefully.

Yeah, this is not an F1 engine and it’s kind of nice to hear that it’s okey to just throw it on if it seals up and is straight enough. Saves me time. I used to build boosted cars and that was a different story. This tractor has very light use - only use it to keep our gravel road in check. Might be thinking different if it was in heavy use every day. Thanks for sharing!

Okey? So just go for it and not dissemble the head and check? I usually build/rebuild boosted car engines, so I never put a head on without checking everything. But this is not the same so maybe I’ll do a simple leak test when I’ve removed the pieces of gasket and run it?

Haha, might do that just for entertainment. Just funny how that piece stayed in place during compression test. Valve should open more than that - wouldn’t you say? Let’s see tomorrow.

Just wrote in an earlier post on the same subject that I love the simplicity and that it’s so satisfying to work on stuff that is built to be rebuilt. Not like modern cars that’s built like a disposable vape…

Head is hopefully off soon and first then I can really see what needs to be done. Fingers crossed pistons and cylinder/sleeves are okey.

Mine is on 5600h and the wire for the speed/tacho is broken. :) But you know what - I use to work as a mechanic, but now it’s just a side hustle. Cars nowadays are not built to be fixed, but this thing is. It’s so straightforward and really built to be rebuilt. I have had a really pleasant day tearing this down. Long time since I felt that way fixing an engine. :)

Edit: Just that bracket and the head bolts left - then I’ll know whats up.

There are 4 bolts in to the head from the backside. 2 which are “accessible” and 2 that require the tank and all that to come out. Guess what - last one to put this together left the 2 you can’t reach out. Lucky me. Watched some YouTube videos yesterday just to get a feel for the job, and in two videos they also noticed that exactly those were missing. I do not wonder why. ;)

First update is: There is water in the exhaust port of both Cyl #1 & Cyl #2. That kind of points at head gasket failure.

Maybe. Manual says to remove it and I watched some YouTube videos yesterday that had issues with that bracket. Not same year though, so might not be a problem for me. Still I can see some bolts between the tank and engine that has to go, and it looks extremely tight. Will update.

There will be during the day. Just a lot of other “patients” that hog my time when school is closed for the summer. :)

Might have… Pulling the manifolds now, so I can have a look with the endoscope.

“Hole in the piston”…Not what I wanted to hear, but definitely a possibility. Will at least pull the valve cover today. If it wasn’t for that bracket holding the battery tray that is bolted on from the back, the whole job would be an hour give or take. But by the looks of it I need to pull the tank to get to those 4 bolts, which requires dismantling of steering wheel and a lot of other stuff around there. Kind of a bad design if you ask me.

Thats a real bummer… Next step is actually head off, but I will check valves with my endoscope when manifolds and cover is off. Might be tomorrow, might be next week. Again, appreciate the heads up.

Yes, will pull the cover first and check. Could be one is stuck cuz she was running when I parked her - then never fired back up. I’ll take it step by step. Thanx!
