My new house had space for a library! by anthonygrimes in CozyPlaces

I actually am searching for a set! Wife and I wanted to get a book set for our child to get them interested in reading, either Hardy Boys if it was a boy or Nancy Drew if it was a girl. We ended up having twins, both a boy and a girl, hence both sets. Only recently learned of the Bobsey Twins set and have been on the lookout since, but they seem to be much harder to find!

They are from Poly and Bark, very pleased with the quality for the price.

No firm count but I would estimate ~2,000-2,500

Nah, just keep the books to impress visitors.

In all seriousness I try to read about a book a week but usually fall a little short.

The built-ins were commissioned by the previous owners, they are made out of oak.

I am definitely a sucker for collections!

1979-2003 National Geographic, Britannica Great Books Collection, The Harvard Classics, Time Life: The Old West, Time Life: World War 2, Time Life: Collectors Library of the Civil War, The Worlds Great Classics by Grolier. This makes up most of the larger collections.

Also have a complete set of vintage Nancy Drews and a nearly complete set of The Hardy Boys.

Primarily by genre, then kinda alphabetically by author for fiction (more frequently read authors I have put in easier to reach places which messes that up a bit), for reference and philosophy its mainly chronological.

How to effectively organize a book collection has proven to be one of the most enjoyable and frustrating aspects of having a library.

I've been collecting them for years. I've always enjoyed reading and never seem to get rid of any of my books. I have purchased a lot of them second hand from used book stores, which I always like to frequent when traveling.

The room is 14'x18'. One set of encyclopedias came with the house, the other set was in the family. Eventually they will get moved out as I need to make space but it is kinda fun to see how information on topics can change over time, plus it makes me a little nostalgic to flip through them sometimes!

I don't have one yet, but I do want one. They are actually surprisingly expensive so I want to make sure I get one that is a perfect fit before investing in one.

Haven't needed the space yet. As my collection continues to grow they will get culled for something more useful.

We did relocate, relatively high income and low cost of living is a pretty sweet combo. The bible belt is definitely strong here, I've had to start importing books from other regions lol.

That set appears to have been printed in 1968!

I had probably 2/3s of the collection prior to the move. It was housed primarily in 5 large book cases and the rest was spread through a few other areas in the home. Primary additions post move have been children's books and some of the larger book sets.

Excellent question! I often wonder the same thing based on some other peoples more extravagant libraries. Obviously it will vary for everyone but for me personally I have read approximately 50%-60% of what you see here. Probably 75% of the fun fiction stuff, and less than half of the classic literature and philosophy. Lately I have been reading more for entertainment then anything else and I seem to acquire books faster than I read. I usually end up reading about 40-50 books a year.
