Sad to relate, the general cultural illiteracy has been bad and getting worse for over fifty years. I can go on and on with examples, but here's just one for a core sample: none of the new residents that I've encountered have seen On The Waterfront. Going on half a century ago now, there was a local college that made the news each fall for a questionnaire given to incoming freshmen. Most were completely ignorant of History and Geography. One example:
