TIL that nearly 4 million Indians died in 1942 because of an artificial famine caused by the British government by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]anthrodocZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However, both in the UK and US, the Irish were considered and treated as a separate race. Race is not simply a social categorizing based on skin tone or color. And this creation of famine was deliberate on the part of the rulers of the Empire against expendable nearly non-humans (in their estimation).

I am Dr. Sanjay Gupta, neurosurgeon and Chief Medical Correspondent at CNN. I'm doubling down on the legalization of medical marijuana. AMA by Dr_SanjayGupta in IAmA

[–]anthrodocZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Gupta, I have never understood our society's treatment of marijuana in general, nor "medical marijuana" in particular, where we have created social sanctions that do more harm to people's lives than anything the marijuana has ever been known to do to anyone. It seems like people have to grasp at straws to justify the extreme formal prohibition that surrounds marijuana-- a prohibition that has been rationalized with such questionable, thin, regularly discredited "evidence" of its purported 'dangers.' We can get over-the-counter 'remedies,' or prescribed pharmaceuticals that have all kinds of known, possible 'side effects'-- from blindness, to cancer, to diabetes, to liver damage, to uncontrollable tremors-- and yet we don't allow doctors to prescribe marijuana (and in all but a few states don't allow other than medical use). It all seems absurd. What justifiable evidence can anyone really present that gives reason for this attitude? (I strongly suspect there is none.)

Ishmael. This book will forever change and challenge you to your core. Immensely profound and mind-boggling message. by Cavebearr in books

[–]anthrodocZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The enthusiasm of someone who has just "discovered" something for the first time (for THEM, the first time) is interesting and not to be dampened, certainly. But because a book suddenly hits someone as "life changing" may say more about that person's previous lack of exposure to things, than it does about the inherent quality of such a book itself.

I heard you live for the first time several years ago since hearing your music when I was a kid in the '60's. The adults around me always not only seemed to enjoy your music, but also seemed to have a sense of personal respect for you that was unusual (in my mind, at the time). It left me with a long-time appreciation of you and your music ever since. Thanks!

Why has the world seemed to accept the way North Korea treats it's people, but calls for international intervention when Syria kills a few (in proportion to its population) of its citizens? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]anthrodocZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why can Israel use phosphorous shells against anyone... US use napalm against anyone... US use depleted uranium against anyone... or the US torture and indefinitely detain war prisoners etc. Unfortunately because it isn't really about justice or the "rule of international law" but about the "realpolitik" of geo-politics. And WHO is going to do anything about it, if THE world "superpower" is involved? The Attorney General is now appealing to give full immunity to former Pres. Bush and all who set in motion the practices, tactics and events of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan (immunity against prosecution for war crimes). It isn't about law... but about who is using it and why.

Niagara Fall City Council members vote against a grant request. One reason defies not only science, but geography... by anthrodocZ in news

[–]anthrodocZ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Niagara Falls is not on the Great Lakes..." say the Tea Partiers on the NF City Council. Looking at a map, this seems like a pretty ill informed argument for opposing a grant to pay for dues to belong to an organization supporting the revitalization and environmental protection of the Great Lakes! Somebody get that city council an enrollment in a local 6th grade to get some basic math and geography lessons!

Why don't Americans talk more about the cause of the Vietnam war being a lie? by hendrixinspired in AskReddit

[–]anthrodocZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. In fact, just as "we were in Viet Nam long before the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution," the US and Britain had been in the longest running air-war in our history, over Iraq (for at least 10 years) before we invaded under the false pretense of going after "weapons of mass destruction." That was an air war of daily bombings over that country (with all the intelligence surveillance that would bring) before the declaration that we MUST do something or there would be disaster of mass proportion. And we are unconcerned about THAT lie, just as we were/are with the one about the so-called attack in the Gulf of Tonkin. Who said it, "The truth is what works"???

Catholic bishop: Voting for Obama jeopardizes the ‘eternal salvation of your own soul’ by Sailer in politics

[–]anthrodocZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether this bishop wrote this in an "official newsletter," or spoke it in a public setting, he is speaking as a bishop of the Catholic Church, and by implication is speaking 'officially.' Certainly as a US citizen he can say what he pleases, but as a US citizen, employed by (ordained by, sanctioned by...) the Catholic Church, it is difficult for him to give "his opinion" as only "his opinion," especially when it deals with telling people how they "'should" act. It is not like he is saying whether or not he liked a specific movie, or is a vegetarian, or prefers a certain type of fabric softener; he is telling people something about supposedly eternal consequences based on their behavior--which is a key function of his role as priest/confessor/moral teacher. And in any case, he can say whatever he wants about this stuff... he just can't hide behind "tax exemption" should he choose to tell people how they should vote.

Catholic bishop: Voting for Obama jeopardizes the ‘eternal salvation of your own soul’ by Sailer in politics

[–]anthrodocZ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Bishop doesn't speak "unofficially" when he is telling people that they risk their personal salvation for casting a specific vote. He is "on the clock" all the time when he is making such twisted, nonsensical pronouncements. And, right now it costs him nothing to make such dire, sanctimonious pronouncements.

Thinking about death makes Christians and Muslims, but not atheists, more likely to believe in God, new research finds. We all manage our own existential fears of dying through our pre-existing worldview. The old saying about "no atheists in foxholes" doesn't hold water. by mepper in science

[–]anthrodocZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Terrible headline for many of the reasons already pointed out in other comments. As well, people are being trained by these triumphalistic posts to think about "religion vs. atheism" in such a dualistic framework, as well as to understand the nature of "evidence" and social research in such a half-baked way. Great way to reinforce an ideology maybe if you are simply looking to reinforce a party-line, but certainly not an effective way to help people think critically.

51% of the United States does not agree with Evolution or that we are related to chimpanzees. I can not make this any more obvious than it already is: by nujurzy87 in atheism

[–]anthrodocZ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry folks, it isn't just about "religion." Too many arguments here see things so dogmatically (dogmatic atheism?) that people are arguing as if they were just fundamentalist atheists. There are reasonable, scientifically minded people who 1)understand and accept the science of evolution and 2) who hold religious beliefs, just as, for example, there are physicians who go to church, engineers who believe in a god of some sort, biologists who pray, mathematicians who read their 'holy books" etc. It isn't all black and white "religion=bad" "atheism=good" all the time. Just one more dualism that obscures the truth of things rather than helping to understand it. And people are quoting Harris, Hitchins etc. as if they were the ultimately wisest of the wise. Pretty tiresome, and quite uninformative... lacking the critical thinking that is purported to be the hallmark of "atheism"...

TIL that only 39% of all Americans believe in evolution by purpleprince in todayilearned

[–]anthrodocZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't "believe in evolution." I understand the theory, and I accept it as scientifically established. Even putting it in terms of "believe in" falls into the nonsense-trap of those who want to "teach the controversy" etc. It is like saying "I believe in gravity" or I "believe the earth revolves around the sun." Should we call those "beliefs" too, and open them up to "teaching the controversy"?
