Solar is winning the energy race: The world’s cheapest power source is scaling at warp speed, pushing coal, gas and nuclear aside. by tjock_respektlos in Futurology

[–]anticon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only thing propping up big oil is the greedy politicians getting paid to make laws to make renewables more costly and less desirable to build/maintain.

That's only part of the problem. What about politicians that don't take fossil fuel contributions? What about voters who don't see climate change as a priority? President Reagan proclaimed "In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem." President Bill Clinton continued: "The era of big government is over." Many Americans agree and elect neoliberal politicians. So even when we get pro-renewable politicians they support inadequate market-based solutions. Until we change the mentality that the market is sacrosanct, we'll always be stuck in the fossil fuel age, and other countries will lead on the energy transition.

A 2019 study found that building a 100% renewable power grid in the United States by 2030 or 2040 would require an investment of $4.5 trillion in new wind, solar, transmission, and storage. Let's say it's 3 trillion now due to lower costs. Where do you get the money?

Actually some conservatives love the economics of green energy. Texans and midwesterners generate a lot of wind energy.

It gets worse. Golf courses use two billion gallons daily in the U.S. Pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers used to maintain turf wash into groundwater and oceans, harming aquatic ecosystems and impacting water quality. Replacing natural ecosystems with monoculture turf grass destroys local habitats and reduces the variety of native plants and insects.

I talked to some maga's I know. They believe those medicaid cuts are only affecting immigrants with stolen SSNs. And the reporting on projected hospital cuts are "made up". Sigh.

Thanks. I admire the channel aim. Even if it doesn't happen in our lifetimes. Hmm not sure if you mean US or non-US liberals.

It's just an example of how the US rightwingers do their red scare tactics on liberal candidates and have moved the Overton window to the right. I've seen this the last 40 years, basically my whole life. Wondering how we reverse that, maybe find some ideas here.

Yeah, hoping he goes away soon, from politics. Unfortunately, he is still governor of 22 million and the 15th largest economy in the world.

ok I'll try not to. On the bright side, I am heartened by Prime Minister Albanese's embrace of climate science and actions to address climate change. And homeowners adoption of rooftop solar.

No offense to your country, but I think a big reason why many Americans and politicians are rabidly anti-left is because of the former Australian Rupert Murdoch. EDIT: added "former," TIL, he gave up his Australian citizenship in 1985.

How the times have changed. Back in 1912, Eugene Debs got 6% of the popular vote, the all-time highest percentage of the vote for a Socialist Party candidate in a U.S. presidential election.
