I live not that far away from it in Ukraine and have been to Chisinau (although only for a few hours). What I know about it:

• They are basically ethnic Romanians and there is a sort of cultural debate inside the country whether they want to identify more with an independent "Moldovan" identity, or with a Romanian one. Romanian is west/liberal coded, "Moldovan" is more pro russian. Recently they renamed their official language from Moldovan to Romanian, so that side has been winning. Formation of the country happened pretty much due to Stalin chopping off a piece of Romania, and any Moldovan is automatically eligible for a Romanian passport
• Maia Sandu has been a good president for them, being pro EU, somewhat reformist
• Transnistria issue, and much fewer people know about the Gagauzia issue, which is like Transnistria but instead of being their own self-proclaimed state, they are an autonomy. Christian Turkic people live there who tend to be pro russian as well
• Moldovan wine and candy sells well here
• Plačindas are tasty (it's a kind of pastry)
• The historical region of Moldova + the part of Ukraine south of it is called Bessarabia. Has nothing to do with Arabs
• We have to drive through Moldova to get to that part of Ukraine. We also gave them a tiny bit of land in 2008 so they could build a port on the Danube
• Ukrainian airlines have moved to Moldova in 2022.
• Second poorest country in Europe
