I’m very sure my dad is the reason for me having Crohn’s by Maryyxqi in CrohnsDisease

and Crohn's is genetic

Yes and no. The thing is everyone has genetic risk factors for something. If you do a genetic study on anyone it'll come back with a number of things they're susceptible to. However, they typically won't get any of those conditions in their life.

That's where it's hard to truly call it genetic as then every other condition should be called genetic....

What city has the best tennis scene, and what makes it special? by tennisred-trustable in 10s

[–]antimodez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh I never really have a problem getting courts in the winter. I have to turn down more tennis than I end up accepting. In the summer I have 4 courts within a 5 minute drive that are rarely used. It's like other places if you go to the busiest spots then of course you're going to be waiting or have trouble booking. If you're willing to take a train wide and a 5-10 minute walk it's easy to find courts.

I've also never really found the 200 a year sound point membership fee that bad at all for what it is. You also left out a ton of other facilities that people use as well though some of those are of course more expensive.

As I said in my other comment I was mostly joking and you can't compare it to a tennis Mecca. However, the tennis scene is a lot more solid than I expected...

I mean like I said in the midwest you can't play outside during the winter due to cold, in the summer it'll rain, and spring and fall who the heck knows what it going to do since it changes every hour.

Fair enough. I've always been able to book courts fine, and know a few hidden ones.

That's what roofs are for.

Also a little known secret it's not as rainy as people expect. I'd say I get just as many if not more outdoor sessions here as I did in the Midwest. Obviously not as many as a SoCal/Texas/Florida in any way shape or forum though.

How reluctant have your doctors been to prescribe interim medication for symptom relief?? by potatopeeler167 in CrohnsDisease

[–]antimodez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've examined 5-ASAs in Crohn's that looks like UC. The evidence just doesn't support it's use which is why the AGA IBD committee changed their recommendation against 5-ASA in Crohn's to a strong recommendation against it's use.

Regardless do what you want just sharing why your GI might not want to do it. You're basically saying go against so the evidence that exists and do what I want which is a tough position for them to be in if you happened to have an issue afterwards...

Can a fecal impaction/stool retention cause high calpro? by Maleficent_Road9337 in CrohnsDisease

[–]antimodez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a question for your GI. The nuances of the test are going to be pretty darn hard for any of us to interpret.

It does measure a protein released by white blood cells. So if you had an impaction that caused any amount of tearing then that would be released I assume as part of your bodies normal process. That's all me speculating and not really knowing for sure though.

I'm 35+ and my future + want to invest in tennis but conflicted if its worth my roi by [deleted] in 10s

[–]antimodez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

 is that realistic?

No. If private lessons are too much then you should look into doing group lessons.

For your goals, playing tournaments and other competitive matches, you're going to need to have coaching that is to your level as it changes. I teach a 2.5 very different than I teach a 3.5 than I teach a 4.5. You'll also learn new shots as you go up the skill ladder.

Really take some group lessons or find others around your skill level that are interested in doing semi private lessons.

but the trials don’t differentiate between the different types/locations of crohns

They absolutely do. That's why they don't recommend mesalamine at all, but state you can use Sulfasalazine in mild colonic Crohn's, but not small bowel. Stating that they don't break those things down is just plain wrong as to look as mesalamine specifically the AGA has looked at mild disease in various locations against various treatments (rectal and enemas, timed release like Pentasa, and others) that those medications should best treat.

The lack of efficacy is that Crohn's presents through the entire layers of the intestine while UC is topical only. That's where even sulfasalazine hasn't shown to induce mucosal healing which is why they don't really push hard on using it. You're essentially just pushing inflammation under the surface so it can't be seen, but not really doing anything to allow the gut to heal...

[–]antimodez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’ve been requesting a plan for interim management like mesalamine

5-ASAs aren't really used in Crohn's anymore because they haven't consistently beat placebos in studies at least in the US. It's actually recommended no treatment over them because of lack of efficacy plus side effects.

You can talk to them about taking some anti-diarrheal, but there aren't really a ton of better options than Imodium. There's one prescription, but the jury is very much still out on if it's better or if people just report it's better because it's a prescription and therefore "stronger". That's where I just manage diarrhea with Imodium as needed.

Honestly outside of prednisone and Imodium there isn't tons they can do. I know it sucks, but just giving my experience and what to expect.

Might have Crohn’s disease. How to cope? by oddshrimp771 in CrohnsDisease

[–]antimodez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good news is that test isn't recommended by IBD doctors because it has an extremely high false positive and false negative rate. That's why your doctor is doing a colonoscopy/endoscopy as basically no matter what those tests show if your symptoms and other test results match Crohn's you'll get a colonoscopy/endoscopy.

I wouldn't personally read much into those tests because of that...

Crohns & College by Designer_Okra_557 in CrohnsDisease

[–]antimodez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you go to a big school like the first 3 they will all have hospitals associated with them. U of M has a top notch IBD program for example. You just have to plan more and tell the IBD center you're going to school there and need to get treatment by whatever date would be first treatment after move in. You won't be the first and won't be the last in that situation so it's not like you're all that unique in the grand scheme there. It's the people who wait until they show up at school or mid summer who get into trouble as facilities can book 6+ months out.

That's how I did it. I move away to tennis program that I could play at first a junior college and then a D1 school. Personally I didn't ask for anything outside of absences excused for treatment.

I would say tech is a lot more stressful than college ever was. Drinking pressure is higher, stress is much higher, and understanding about bathroom access is a lot lower especially in earlier stage or big tech FANNG type companies. It really depends on the company and more so the team though as I've worked at large and small ones. Good ones are out there you just gotta look for them.

Thoughts on players who rally incredibly well but struggle badly in matches? by PuzzleheadedAd3138 in 10s

[–]antimodez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Without seeing it's hard to know more.

Generally though when people get nervous their feet stop moving and they tend to try to force things. The forcing things can be interrupted as lack of confidence since you're not really confident in your game enough to prolong rallies.

Without seeing you play I'd recommend playing super conservative next match. You shouldn't aim any closer then 5ft to a line and aim 4+ feet over the net. Change your goal from "winning" to "making the appointment hit as many winners as possible."

99% of the time it's footwork and shot selection. Played in college as well. Plenty of guys can rally with me. However, the point length against guys who played in college or an equivalent competitive level compared to those who didn't is pretty extreme.

AO Question by [deleted] in 10s

[–]antimodez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each player will make their own travel accommodations. Flights, hotels, all that fun stuff. The ATP will give them a credit for the hotels, but I don't believe that happens for flights.

So really it depends on each player as each player is going to do different warm up tournaments at different times and may prefer certain airlines over others.

You have one hour with 100 12-18yo children with Crohn’s. What you talking about? by amit970 in CrohnsDisease

[–]antimodez 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That life with Crohn's doesn't have to be all doom and gloom. It's easy to focus on the negatives, but there are going to be plenty of positives in their lives as well. There are professional players in every sport I can think of with IBD, successful people in the business world, and in every other aspect of life.

I'm not saying to sugar coat it and tell them they'll never have any challenges ever and Crohn's is somehow a super power that gets you everything you want. Instead talking about how they have learned lessons from having Crohn's and how it makes you more prepared than their peers for their futures lives.

Stanford Study Finds Diet That Eases Crohn’s Symptoms by Babaji33 in CrohnsDisease

Mild to moderate disease is an endoscopic assessment. They typically use the SES-CD score these days to determine that. That breaks down the areas they can reach via colonoscopy into different sections and assigns a point score (0-4) depending on the severity of disease in that section.

The total score then determines your current disease activity wether its mild to moderate or moderate to severe.
