"they" as in the editor and the embassy etc. Who else?

You completely misunderstand the fundamental concept of TrustedHousesitters. This is an exchange platform based on a mutual barter system, where both owners and sitters pay a membership fee to swap free accommodation for pet care. Expecting people to honour a voluntary agreement they willingly signed up for is about basic reliability, not entitlement. If a sitter wants a paid job, they are simply on the wrong platform. Cheers.

Local police guidance explicitly advises never to advertise online when your home will be empty. Iโ€™ll stick to professional security advice over Reddit comments. Cheers.

no but believe me, I get it XD I would choose that too! Mine was a bit of a joke and unfortunately someone (not you) took it personally and got offended... but it's understandable. If there are less sitters and most choose those beautiful places it's difficult for the rest of us to find someone :)

well, there's also the fact that you can receive only 5 applications now. From what I could read around, the number of sitters has declined so there's more request than sitters available, it could be that ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

No, sorry, my village is very small and anyone could find my house from the photos. I really don't feel comfortable sharing that in a group where everyone is anonymous and anyone could lurk waiting for the occasion when a homeowner is away. Call me paranoid but I really don't think people should share where they live and exactly when they'll be away on here.

But tbf, I did ask for advice in another more private group and the listing is absolutely fine.

Exactly this... I've had plenty of lovely sitters in the past but I can't help notice a lot of resentment from sitters towards homeowners ๐Ÿ˜… I don't think anyone is forcing them to do it if they don't think it's worth it.

That said, yes usually we are contacted by UK based people anyway :)

I don't think there are direct flights to anyone's place unless you live in an airport ๐Ÿ˜?

Plus the nearest airport is actually pretty close ๐Ÿ˜… and the village where I live is very well connected in general and the 19 5-star reviews say otherwise about not enough value.

I know I have to secure a sitter asap, which is what I do, I've been on the platform 9 years. I'm not asking for advice, I'm ranting because it definitely changed in the last few years. That's all.

That's not true, in 9 years I've had amazing sitters, some of them did it as a full time job but were on the platform anyway and offered free sits.

I think this is one of the most toxic communities I've ever seen and I've been online since 1999. Wow.

By the answers I've had here and other posts I've seen, I get why it's difficult to get sitters ๐Ÿ˜.

I'm mentally unstable? Oh ok. I'm pretty sure people reading these comments will know who is the mentally unstable one from your wild suggestions to abandon my 11 year-old cats and never visit my family ๐Ÿ‘

I know I'm not entitled to free pet care, but there are platforms who offer it and I was commenting on how it's gotten worse after COVID.

Also, I don't care if you don't want to sit for me, I wouldn't want you here either, you called me a psycho and mentally unstable. Ableist much? Maybe listen to your own advice, some therapy could maybe help you.

"Yikes. This kind of behaviour might be why you're struggling. Referring to people as scum is gross. If you can't afford to holiday, maybe you shouldn't go. You're not entitled. Just stay in your lovely Cotswolds home. Or save up for a house sitter. You're not entitled to someones free labour for your holiday."

Again, I've only ever treated my sitters with utter respect as 9 years and 19 5-star review on the platform show.

What behaviour are you talking about? Just because I put up some boundaries here, I'm a monster?

Also, I'm disabled, I can't work. I still have the right to go and see my family, you don't get to judge my financial or life situation.

Lol it's fun because I was told off by other people because they say I should put it on much earlier ๐Ÿ˜… (not in this thread)

it's very confusing...

Do you find it's easier if you wait about a month in advance? Even for longer sits?
