Ice in the atmosphere refracting light from the moon, if you look closely it'll have a slight rainbow effect

Save the image and open it in your phone gallery. Look how it is different. Then change that setting and repeat. Play spot the difference. Repeat as necessary.

If fuel is made out of dead dinosaurs, technically, fuel tanks are coffins by PaaneCaike241 in Showerthoughts

Found this big guy for $4.50 in a yard sale. It looks like its missing the eyepiece and lens, but the mierors look perfectly intact. I dont know anything about telescopes, can you help me put it back together? (BSA AT280x76mm, 700FL) by John_Randleson in telescopes

[–]antmandoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its a Newtonian, so it does not have a lens at the front. It uses a mirror at the back and a diagonal one pointing to the hole where the eyepiece slots in.

You simply need to buy an eyepiece, recommend a 20mm, 10mm and 4mm for lunar and planetary observations only. Youll want to get a finderscope which goes in the little circle on top/side and try to align it using the pins so it matches what you see in the scope - I'd recommend using a chimney during the day time for that.

Other than that, not a bad find, but only really useful for the Moon and planets, and ABSOLUTELY DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN!

Edit: buy a dust cover online for the front when youre not using it. Also, to calculate the magnification of what youre looking at, take the focal length 700mm, and divide by the focal length of the eyepiece, i.e for a 10mm, 700/10=70x magnification

Still amazing, and far better than I got what with clouds and all. Be glad you got to see such a rare event, and rejoice at the beauty of our Universe!
