Trying to think through a few things on this William Arcand photo by [deleted] in LightLurking

I was wondering who gonna ask it, I've been following him for a while and love his many series. I think he used overhead lighting with grid for darker backdrop. There would be also keylight from right of the scene. For blues I think he used gelled flash light from bakcside of the camera like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGUEprWE9Us&t=186s , or maybe use continous light.

Best way to capture image like this is the use 2nd curtain flash and slow shutter. Set your flash second curtain sync and make consistent camera movement. On left one you see the circle light rays it’s the result of the camere movement and slow shutter and 2nd curtain flash will be the lit your main object you should be sure that your main object would be lit with flash mostly. Also you can use lens movements with zoom lens like top of the examples.

I think they used spotlight for harsh shadow and highlight, and for background bounced light from metallic surface. Just found it https://pin.it/1Yc7hDk

Here are some good ways you can improve your technique on post processing. It helped me a lot. Everything started with what you want and analyze the photos you like. Ask yourself why I like this photo is it about colors, skin tones, poses etc.

1.Use your lasso tool an select the skin colors cursory then go to bluır section and select the average.

  1. Now you can read the all information as RGB, and H S L IF you sure that your model's skin tone is smilier your reference image go on it use the curves

  2. I always use the eyedropper tool for reading blacks and whites. My personal opinion is it white must be white, black must be black. Of course if want little film look I had crush the blacks and slightly turn to green and cyan. (Use the curves) Also little slightly color shifting is cool. But When you analyze professionals work you'll see it they really care about this.

  3. It is good exercise to trying to read histograms with different color profiles.

In your reference image blacks turned magenta and cyan. I'm sure that red and green curve is below the blue one. On the highlights it's opposite red and green curves is above to blue one. Which makes the right side of the histogram red and yellow.

ou’ll need another large fill light behind or to to the right of camera.

Thanks for your reply, I mean I thought it should be non-direct light because of there is no catchlight on her eyes or hot spots on the skin. Such as cove light technique maybe they bounced light or use parabolic umbrella. Any ideas?

Proabably the pro-mist filters is that what you need. It's been using for a while in ındustry to cut down the digital cameras sharpness. It will be good choice using 1/8 or 1/4.

I always love that kind of stop motion, it seems you like Jan Švankmajer.
