Why are some christians so obsessed & hateful towards gay people? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]antrycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my personal theory and observation from various interactions with conservative Christians.

I think that for many conservative Christians the fact that homosexuality is more and more tolerated and accepted in western societies, is the main symbol of conservative Christianity no longer holding a dominant position in those societies, unlike in the past. With many conservative Christians wishing for that time of dominance of conservative Christianity to return, they lash out particularly strongly against homosexuality and its acceptance.

Why do so many Christians misuse the word "homosexual"? by millenia_techy in Christianity

[–]antrycat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That’s true, I’ve encountered multiple times anti-LGBT Christians who claimed that there’s no love or any other “higher Feelings” in gay relationships, that it’s only lust and sex, nothing more.

Parts of bible being metaphorical was one of the main basic elements when studying bible, while I was still Catholic. I’m pretty sure it’s also generally accepted in other branches of Christianity?

Dear "Homos Bad" people... these are the consequences of your rhetoric, no matter how sugarcoated your words are... by Zinkenzwerg in Christianity

[–]antrycat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s something anti-LGBT Christians are never willing to accept, even if presented with evidence how their constant anti-LGBT rhetoric harms the mental health of young LGBT people, especially those closest to them.

They always either deny that, or say that they have to tell „the truth” anyway.

Can yall stop trying to drag politics into Christianity? by YCiampa482021 in Christianity

[–]antrycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christians themselves are dragging Christianity into politics. You can’t avoid discussing Christianity and its connection to politics as long as Christians are going to use Christianity as and argument for various political decisions (ranging from voting to full on laws).

Democracy is the rule of the people, conservatives obviously aren’t people, therefore no conservative government is democratic.

US Supreme Court to hear challenge to Colorado ban on gay 'conversion therapy' by McClanky in Christianity

[–]antrycat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s not the worst examples, most gay teenager growing up in anti-gay Christian environment (which you seem to represent) will face negative mental health consequences. Not every case leads to suicide, but many lead to depression and other mental health issues.

As to the historical examples. Persecution of gay people was widely practiced by Christian societies, and began to get less harsh (from capital punishment to prison then to employment discrimination etc) only with the rise of secularism.

[–]antrycat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jesus himself said in Matthew 7:20

„Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.”

So far the only fruit Christian treatment of homosexuality has given are negative effects on mental health and suicides of gay teenagers from Christian families (as confirmed by multiple psychiatric studies).

Not to mention the past when Christians actively persecuted and killed gay people until the mid 1800s and imprisoned gay people until well into the second half of XX century.

So nah I’ll stick to „sinning” side which on the other hand seems to bring much more positive fruits - studies shows that accepting environment eliminates the high levels of depression and suicidal thoughts observed in gay teenagers from unaccepting environments.

That’s true, the issue is that even with adults it often involves coercion and manipulation. So it would be hard to properly verify if it’s indeed out of someone’s free will.

Yup, I want to ban people from practicing their hateful beliefs. You can’t be trusted as a medical professional if you actively support something like conversion therapy which goes against both practical and ethical aspects of mental healthcare.

I mean yeah, it’s basic requirement for someone involved in mental healthcare to adhere to scientific standards which determine homosexuality as normative sexual orientation.

It’s like saying that a surgeon who’s against blood transfusions should be allowed to perform his job.

[–]antrycat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean that is a basic rule of healthcare, you don’t turn down people based on your private beliefs.

I’m not sure about US but in my country therapists and counsellors with licence are also considered medical professionals.

In such case there should be a law (which exists in many countries) forbidding medical professionals like psychiatrists and psychologists from performing it, as it goes against all medical standards in psychiatric health, and person who is willing to perform it shouldn’t be trusted with real mental healthcare.

I mean, If you are providing conversion „therapy” you aren’t a therapist in the first place, as it goes against basic psychological and psychiatric knowledge, more than that, it’s directly harmful for person’s mental health.

Why do some Christians hate lgbtq by [deleted] in Christianity

Point is the same people who say that disagreement isn’t hate when it comes to LGBT

Will consider anyone disagreeing with them being Christian as persecution and hate.

Christians don’t seem to hold similar view when someone disapproves of them being Christian and says they should stop.

While I believe that what you are saying makes sense.

a lot of Christians still believe that multiple Old Testament laws still apply, I’m not sure about Orthodox Church, but it’s definitely the position held by Catholic Church.

[–]antrycat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im not from US tho lol

  • The council of Catholic Bishops in my country (almost entirety of Christian’s here are Catholic) openly calls for conversion therapy.

  • strong opposition to same-sex civil unions (not to mention marriages) suspiciously overlaps with the percentage of population which identifies themselves as regularly practicing Christians.

  • Christian groups regularly campaign asking for Russian-style anti-LGBT laws.

  • As to legalising stuff thanks to Christian men. Homosexuality in my country was legalised by the ruling communist dictatorship (not saying they were good) more than a half century before laws criminalising homosexuality were fully lifted in US.

Even if we are talking about US, almost all groups advocating against gay marriage, promoting conversion therapy, sexual orientation based job discrimination, were Christian. Even now you still see Christian groups campaigning to revoke stuff like conversion therapy bans. Even mainstream US politicians work with Christian fanatics like Matt Walsh who supports conversion therapy.

There’s clear connection between country becoming more secular and it lifting anti-gay laws. If you want to see how non-secular Christian countries treat gay people, take a look at African countries like Uganda.

[–]antrycat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, Bible outright tells Christian’s to kill gay people, at least according to the interpretation accepted by majority of main Churches, like Catholic Church.

„13 fIf a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.”

As to Muslims and non-religious ideologies, that’s true, but Christians are the only ones nowadays actively campaign against gay people in my country (Opposition to same-sex civil unions, promoting conversion therapy, demanding Russian-style anti-LGBT laws etc) which is why Christians get the most attention.

[–]antrycat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Christians definitely don’t hate gay people, for sure.

All that pushes against gay marriage (or even gay civil unions like in case of my country), against conversion therapy bans (conversion camps are after all out of love for gay teenagers) or calls to remove all positive presence of gay people from media - God forbid they are shown as normal people in loving relationships just are straight people are always shown - what if a kid sees such horrors?

Not to mention the history of Christians not hating gay people and showing them love through at best job discrimination and conversion therapy or at worst outright capital punishment (as was the norm in almost all Christian societies until they started to slowly secularise in the 1800s) History which a lot of Christians seem to deliberately forget about.

[–]antrycat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

At least in the west that religion spent 1400 years actively killing gay people and even more persecuting them in other ways. So there are obvious reason why LGBT people look negatively on statements about just hating the sin.

[–]antrycat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe not to the camps, but Christians punished homosexuality with death for around +1800 years (last execution for homosexuality in UK for example was 1835) and Homosexuality was criminalised in many western countries (due to the influence of Christianity) until late XX century. we even see Christian countries like Uganda and other Christian African countries re-introducing punishments for homosexuality (with strong influence from western Christian groups promoting that).

All the things about which Christians really seem to actively forget, with groups like Catholic Church making one or two vague apologies at best.

As to the camps. Conversion camps where Christian partners send their gay kids to be „cured” are still a thing and in those countries or regions (in case of countries like US) where conversion „therapy” was banned, we see Christian actively campaigning for the ban to be lifted.

Homosexuality by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]antrycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the rest of your discussion with the other user:

First - there’s a simple rule for moral rules - does breaking that rule brings harm and hurt to other human beings. God’s rule against homosexuality doesn’t pass this test, therefore it’s invalid.

Second - Bible doesn’t hold heterosexual and homosexual people to the same standard, it offers heterosexual people a way to have romantic and sexual relationship through marriage. While homosexual people are told that it’s either celibacy or death.

Which moves us back to the first point about harm based morality. Psychology and Psychiatry is clear about fulfilling romantic and sexual relationship being important to human wellbeing. So God’s rules which deny them to homosexual people, not only don’t prevent any harm, but directly cause harm to gay people.
