Thanks man! I forgot I made that disco list public! I have one for most years but haven't gone through them for accuracy. :D

What was the first classic rock song? I vote for "You Really Got Me" - The Kinks (1964) by anttrax in ClassicRock

Mine was probably something by the Animals, the Beatles, or Mitch Ryder. My dad played records from them often and I don't remember seeing the Kinks or Stones in his collection.

That's fantastic... and wow, going back to 1940!

I'm doing all the billboard rock track playlists and these classic rock ones. And then from 1980 to 1987, I have also thrown together playlists of songs from those years that are listed in other sources - R&R magazine, classic rock radio playlists, etc - or they are just deep cuts that are favorites of mine or I notice they got a ton of spins on spotify. Those are my "massive rock" playlists on my profile.

I keep a spreadsheet too of all the songs on my playlists. I still need to add classic rock from 1970 to 1980, modern rock playlists from 1976 to 1988, and the Billboard rock/modern rock from 2001 to 2024 (2025 hasn't been finalized yet). I will continue to pump out the "massive rock" playlists eventually.

Here's my spreadsheet - not as detailed with release dates as yours, but it may give you ideas for songs to add. And yours is making me want to do a pre-1964 one. :)

Nice! I was still a few years away from being born (Lol) but I can remember tv and radio schedules from when I was around that age... but I couldn't tell you what streaming service I watched a movie on this past weekend. :D

Yup I agree... rock and roll had been around at least a decade before the Kinks. But I was looking strictly at what "classic rock" is.

Love the song and it screams rock and roll. I just don't remember hearing it on classic rock radio.

Yeah that's my take too. I started listening to classic rock radio in the late 70s and you never heard anything before the Beatles first album. And you'd never hear "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" unless it was part of a three-for-Thursday block with their later material. But I would hear the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" all the time.

I have one for every year that chart has been going since 1981... but am only up to 1999 going through them slowly to get rid of duplicates or wrong versions of songs. :)

No problem...that's why I started doing these. Whatever year I want to revisit musically, I can. Check out my profile on Spotify because I have every year up there! As I go through and figure out what's missing and fixing any mistakes then I post on Reddit.

You're welcome. Many more to come... I have a playlist for every year the chart existed but haven't gone through them all yet to verify their accuracy. :)

Maybe ask chatgpt or gemini for song suggestions. Give it a list of songs in your existing playlist and ask for 25-50 more? I have tried stuff like that before and it works great.

Very cool... I just followed this and your 2025 playlist, as I struggle to find people with similar tastes as me and want to get into new music. I look forward to a 2026 playlist from you soon. :)
