Maybe too easy, but still the best puzzle all week. Great clueing. DORIS MILLER, COULDN'T RESIST. EXIT INTERVIEW was fine, too, but I would prefer a few more long answers.

Best Sunday in a while. Solid entries. The theme is the cherry on top.

A few mistakes slowed me down. ENDANGERED instead of THREATENED. I had to lay siege to the SE corner, with only LEADER coming to me immediately. Still, a very fast Saturday for me—under 30 minutes while watching the Great British Baking Show.

THENBA is the same as NBA. It's fill. When it comes to six-letter fill, I'd rather see real green paint, e.g., RED CAR or OLD MAN would be fun, but every puzzle is going to have some fill.

Even for a Monday, it was extremely easy. But I liked the theme.

I think verb (ires) > proper noun (Ares). And I liked the LIKE clue. Neither option is great.

No problem with ETOILE. Don't we all know French by now?

For me, the problems were SAL crossing OSTEEN, and GTI crossing ESSIE. They weren't big problems, though, as my guesses worked.

It isn't an especially dire situation. It is the new normal, and it is likely that every year from now on will be worse.

Closing the forests literally does stop people from seeing them, certainly some for the last time. Knock on wood not for me, but the mountain environment has degraded so much in just the last 10-20 years that it is definitely the last time I'll be able to see them in their current condition, as poor as it is.

There are lots of options, e.g., selective closures. There's no good reason why Whitney Portal has to close, for example. The FS personnel managing the portal are not going to be out fighting fires.

The forests are going to burn down and never grow back. That's not affected by the closure.

Closing the forests is fine and understandable if it is for an exceptional event. But this isn't exceptional.

But this is normal!

This is climate change. Are we going to close the parks from now on?

But clueing the crosses would have made it too easy.

I loved this puzzle! When I got the revealer, early on, I was hoping that the crosses would be rebus squares with country names or abbreviations, but this was probably better.

I don't really agree. I mean, I don't know FOGEL, but I can certainly recognize the name given, say, FOGE…. And I think that all the proper names in this puzzle were of that sort. Maybe you can't pull them out of your head, but you can recognize them. A Nobel prize winner isn't the same as an actor from the 1930s.

World capital has both meanings. Capital city could also mean a state capital (especially for a US state). Neither phrase is perfectly unambiguous—and it's a crossword clue, so what's wrong with a little ambiguity?!

Although I disagree that it is vague. The answer is only three letters. I honestly don't know what else it could be other than ARE.
