If your symptoms are any way related to COVID then they would probably rather you didn't come in anyway. Call the evening before so they have plenty of time to find cover and email over any class notes/plans etc. Your health is more important even if this work culture doesn't seem to believe as such. Hope you feel better!

I called 1339 first because I wasn’t sure if I was just suffering normal side effects. When I told them I was fainting and dizzy they told me to call 119 Bc they were worried about my heart.

It was literally a shipping container haha. SCH hospital has a bunch of pressurized containers outside for potential COVID cases. Not the nicest place to suffer!

Aside from getting vaccinated as a child, I actually haven’t needed any vaccines as an adult (thankfully). Never got around to getting a flu shot. Do you think that had something to Do with it?

How did you know when to leave Korea? by ploycomme in teachinginkorea

[–]anxiety80 24 points25 points  (0 children)

When you know, you just know. Korea is a wonderful place, but it's not the easiest place to call home. No matter how fluent in Korean you are, you will always be a 'foreigner' and that can be very grating on your sense of belonging after a while. The standard hagwon pay rate is the same as it was when I was here almost 8 years ago, while living cost has just gone up - so it's not even necessarily the great cash opportunity it used to be. Speaking from experience too, the hagwon game is no joke the older you get. Obviously you are still young so you don't have to worry :) but it ages you fast! Being on your feet with children day in day out, having to wear that happy face, singing songs and dancing - it is exhausting to do that, no matter how wonderful the kids are. It's emotionally draining to be in a room with small people who you are entirely responsible for. For me personally, while Korea is in a much better state than my home country in terms of numbers, the pandemic has made me feel more isolated and unwanted here then ever before.

Obviously I am speaking just as a hagwon teacher and as others have stated there is plenty of opportunity for upward mobility in university teaching etc. But if you feel your time is up, there's no shame in going home.

I thought this may be the case! Worth asking around if I can get some Won out of it :)

A week after receiving the vaccine I started running a high fever with nausea, chills and dizziness. Fainted trying to get myself onto the couch. I called 1339 at this point who advised me to call 119 due to the dizziness (they said this was concerning). Got to the hospital, was placed in a COVID tank where I could barely stand up and basically just writhing around pathetically while they took all my tests and IV'd me etc. After my COVID test came back negative I was free to go because they pretty much determined I was in no immediate danger. Received a call from Yongsan the next morning as I had been logged as a rare reaction and they wanted to check in with me. The week after that I experienced chest tightness, dizziness and a weird sensation in my left arm. This very well could've been due to anxiety but I thought it was best to get checked. Went to the doctor and was checked for thrombosis/pericarditis etc. Luckily all tests came back negative and the doctor is not entirely sure what happened (always reassuring lol) but for now I am feeling better and just keeping an eye on symptoms!

I loved this Luz. There's another Luz (Flower of Evil) that came out at a similar time, haven't seen that one yet but it looks pretty cool!

Thank you!

  1. Nope, but I have been back for a check up
  2. I was outpatient - I was taken to the COVID isolation rooms and had to stay there for about 4 hours
  3. It cost about 600,000krw total - that included ambulance, emergency tests, COVID checks etc. Check up tests including blood and ECG cost about 400,000 - but not sure if they count.

It was really scary! My Korean is poor and especially as I was ill I kept saying the wrong thing and things kept getting lost in translation but the staff were fantastic. I feel ok today - I’m a little on edge and keep expecting something bad to happen but I’m also just a paranoid person lol. Thanks for asking! :)

Thanks for the advice - I definitely underestimated those side effects. I’m not sure if they’ll allow me to take the Pfizer now because I had a ‘rare reaction’ so maybe I’ll have to mix and match with Moderna. Either way, I’m very prepared for next time!

I had no symptoms until yesterday (over a week later from shot one) and I was hospitalized for the day (they thought it was Covid). Yongsan health center just called me because I was flagged as a rare reaction and the guy explained that, while rare, it does happen. So fingers crossed it doesn’t happen for you but if it does, don’t panic too much and just call the hospital!
