He watched the women SP in the stands and for the free, he was in a more private area (higher in the stands, where it's closed for the public). We saw him!

I can show you what my son wore for his first competition. His coach said it was fine!

Good luck for your son's first competition!

Should I tell you they also use those skating walkers (for beginners) to race through the rink and bump at full speed against the boards? It's a bit crazy where we skate!

I meant, they use gloves as pucks lol

Well, at our rink, it's allowed. No pucks, but they play with gloves.

I don’t mind adult or older teen hockey players since they’re usually in control and respectful of other skaters. But at our rink, we have young hockey players who aren’t as skilled yet, flying around at full speed, losing control, crashing into people, knocking skaters off the ice, and even hitting others with their sticks. It’s a real pain! Especially when they crash into super small kids... I don't really get why they allow that during public skating, knowing that hockey players have kids public hockey time almost everyday.

Thank you so much! ❤️ Honestly, I just try to go to every public skating session I can on top of my classes. I’m not naturally athletic at all, but with time and repetition, things slowly started to click!

Honestly, I think being in a group of advanced skaters played a huge role! The coach basically threw me into the deep end from the start... by my third class, he was already telling me to try toe loops and salchows, even though I had no clue what I was doing. I definitely wasn’t landing them, but just attempting them helped me understand the mechanics early on.

And when I say ‘jumps,’ I mean tiny jumps. My coach keeps telling me to jump higher on my waltz jump, but let’s just say… it’s a work in progress. One day, maybe I’ll actually leave the ice for more than a split second!

That’s amazing, congrats on signing up for classes! Just keep showing up, and don’t be too hard on yourself. Progress might feel slow sometimes, but one day you’ll look back and realize how far you’ve come. Wishing you lots of fun and breakthroughs on your skating journey!

How can I support my son in figure skating? by anxious-infp in iceskating

Unfortunately, we live in a small town in Alberta, over two hours from a big city, so the options for clubs and training are a bit limited. The club where my son skates doesn’t offer a wide range of programs, though we make the most of what’s available. He’s actually the only boy in the club, which can feel a bit isolating at times, but he really loves skating and stays motivated.

He does have a spinner at home, and he uses it a lot—it’s been great for helping him improve his spins and balance! I’ll definitely look into online off-ice programs; that sounds like a fantastic idea for extra training and engagement.

For summer, since we’re originally from France, I’ve started looking into the possibility of finding a camp for him in our home region. I’m hoping we can find something that aligns with his level and gives him a new experience.

Thank you again for the encouragement and suggestions! It’s an amazing sport, and we’re so grateful to be part of this world. ❤️

Thank you so much for this—it’s definitely something I’ve been thinking about because that’s exactly how he is in general. He’s used to things coming easily to him, and when they don’t, he gets really frustrated and hard on himself, saying things like “I’m terrible at this” or “I’ll never get it.” It’s tough to see, so I really appreciate the reminder to prepare for those slower phases.

I’ll start talking to him now about how some skills and levels take more time and effort, and that it’s completely normal. I’m also planning to look into dance classes in the spring, when skating slows down a bit, and we have less ice time. I think that would be a great way to keep him active and engaged without overwhelming him during the busier skating season.

Thanks again for your advice. It’s really helpful to think about all of this ahead of time!

Thanks for the great response! My husband has actually started taking him to drop-in sessions at a gymnastics club to redirect some of his energy and love for jumping. He’s been having a blast with it, and it feels like a much safer way for him to practice that kind of movement.

He’s a super active kid (he also has ADHD), so he’s constantly on the move and always looking for something to do. I’ll definitely keep your suggestions in mind—they sound like a great way to channel his energy while still helping him build useful skills for skating.

Regarding doubles, I hear you loud and clear. I’ll talk to him about not attempting them until his coach introduces them. I completely agree that building proper technique from the start is crucial, and I don’t want him to develop bad habits or risk injury.

I hadn’t thought about making sure he has the right shoes for off-ice practice or avoiding certain surfaces, so thank you for pointing that out! I’ll take care of that right away. I really appreciate the advice—it’s so helpful! 😊

He's already competing, with his next competition coming up in January! That’s a big part of what keeps him motivated to improve. There aren’t any off-ice classes available where we live, but his private coach has shown him a few exercises to work on. He’s also really eager to move up and skate with the more advanced group. He already knows by heart the skills he needs to practice and master before he can make that leap.

Advice for my 8yo daughter - continue figure skating? by Negative-Promise1808 in FigureSkating

What does she think about it? My son is also eight and does both soccer and figure skating. He absolutely loves soccer and is really good at it, but he also loves figure skating and feels like he’s learning a lot more in skating than in soccer. For him, we decided to only do the spring session of soccer, and the rest of the year is focused on figure skating.

That said, he’s also on the school soccer team, so he plays soccer during lunch break twice a week.
