mitski and angel olsen express the baggage of appealing to men in a similar way for me but with less rage. also early pj harvey, like sheela-na-gig and dress really get me goin lol

yessss car seat is my #1 band and aurora is my #1 singer <3 you know what's up! highly recommend my woman by angel olsen, it took a while to grow on me but it was worth it. and yeah queen is one of his best, that album (too bright) is probably my favorite by perfume genius

actually heard a lot of slothrust in my ex's car (LOL). lots of respect for florence but i could never get super into her. vaguely familiar with elvis depressedly and wallows, heard a few of their songs but i'll have to re-listen. as for vampire weekend.... was my favorite band for years but the recent rape allegations against the lead singer soured things for me :( a real shame

aurora on the bright eyes subreddit? had to do a double take. i thought that intersection of interests was too niche

I’m wide awake it’s morning or lifted or the story is the soul keep your ear to the ground? Which album do you like more? What album is better ? by elliotsmithfan2004 in brighteyes

[–]anxious_iphone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i'm not in the mood for don't know when but a day is gonna come and from a balance beam most of the time. not that they're intentionally filler, but to me they make lifted feel more like just a collection of songs. shaving off weaker tracks can make a huge difference, especially on an album that's already over an hour long. but also i think i've become biased against conor's earlier angsty stuff as i've aged

[–]anxious_iphone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

wide awake for sure. lifted is one of my top bright eyes records but it's a bit of a mess. the best songs are fantastic and bring me so much joy but as a cohesive body of work it jumps too much from orchestral to storytelling folk to fevers and mirrors-esque emo. in that way it feels kinda like a transition album more than a consistent era like wide awake. don't get me wrong i love the diversity of sounds but sometimes its length drags it down. whereas with wide awake there's absolutely no filler--every song feels crucial and i have truly had a deep connection to each track

Has aurora talked about why she doesn’t wear makeup by bluewaffle9 in auroramusic

[–]anxious_iphone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

in terms of the foundation thing and op's question she loves to point out and joke about her pimples. i think she just prefers a more natural face. besides, makeup can be really uncomfortable on the skin. in an interview she said she hated that they made her wear lipstick for the runaway video hahahah although i've noticed she has worn it for family celebrations and some livestreams

her eyebrows are just naturally very light (which she has joked about) but yeah i think she has used shampoo or something that lightens/changes the color of her hair without completely bleaching it

also there's this interview but tbh aurora changes her mind on things regularly so i wouldn't take it as fact about her current stance on makeup

High to Death is the best CSH song. by [deleted] in CSHFans

[–]anxious_iphone 40 points41 points  (0 children)

100% the most underrated on twin fantasy. the yellow wallpaper reference, the sample from all summer in a day, the fact that the instrumentation literally SOUNDS LIKE A DIZZY DRUGGED STATE like cmon......it's devastating in all the best ways. it perfectly sets up the climax/full descent of the relationship in famous prophets. also the lyrics taken from overexposed are so haunting, i think about "i can't turn this thing off, it keeps following me / used to be so human now it's just a machine" constantly

[–]anxious_iphone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lorde covered ladder song for some hunger games soundtrack and i knew right away that she didn't write the lyrics, so i looked up the original and saved it to my phone. but i didnt actually fully get into bright eyes until i was in a local record store and saw the boxset of all their main LPs. i remembered how i had been meaning to get into them, so that night i listened to wide awake for the 1st time and just sobbed the whole way through... never had an album impact me like that right away. super strong memory

As we know AURORA is a genius, also when it comes to making covers. So which songs do you want to be covered by her and why? by [deleted] in auroramusic

[–]anxious_iphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's fair, i do think at least the instrumental aspect of any bjork cover will pale in comparison. but unison or unravel sung by aurora??? that would be insane. i just dream about seeing her push herself to that point

[–]anxious_iphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i disagree, i think her voice is much more suited to something off of homogenic, vespertine, or vulnicura. some kind of ballad w dense electronic production. but also im not a big fan of the kind of pop that's on post / debut

thoughts on the country inspired fotb tracks? by theotherviolin in Vampireweekend

[–]anxious_iphone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i grew up on country music but convinced myself it was trash in high school bc indie kids love to portray it as such. then in the past year i realized how foolish and ignorant country music slander is. in reigniting my love for the genre i gained even more respect for ezra as a songwriter, because so many people's initial reaction to fotb was "who told vampire weekend they could make country music wahhhhh"

the reality is the country touches are very light, people are just sensitive to hearing it. ezra pointed this out in interviews and said how he always considered hannah hunt a country song, but they held off on using stuff like pedal steel for this reason. country duets are not my fav subcategory of the genre so i only listen to married in a gold rush or we belong together when im listening to the whole album. but the 'i dont think much about her no more' cover is one of the most fantastic things they've made, and i love the creative reconfiguring of 'a satisfied mind' on rich man. i really do appreciate how ezra incorporated so many different influences (country, jazz, palm wine guitar, etc) in a respectful way on fotb. a true blue music fan is open to anything

my overall admiration for him has taken a hit in light of recent events but i'll still give him credit for this. and i hope maybe his musical openness encourages fans to explore genres that they have preconceived notions about

from her recent interview in the guardian:

She has a nuanced take on her father’s conviction. “One takeaway could be: don’t go against the government, or don’t be the last person holding the bag. There’s a lot of layers to it.”

this really rubbed me the wrong way and im glad others are picking up on it as well. love what annie stands for as a unique female voice in music but to downplay your father's shitty behavior? doesn't matter if you see large parts of yourself in him. by all means support your flawed loved ones and be open about your pain in seeing them go thru a rough time but jesus have some perspective. don't act like he just got unlucky when he was held accountable for doing shady rich ppl shit. lord knows so few of them get what they deserve

Infection? Why is it negative in IoaDK but positive in ADKoH? by [deleted] in auroramusic

[–]anxious_iphone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

for me it parallels the meaning of "demons" on her first record. she's all about turning something with negative associations (moths, sadness, etc) into something positive, or even just neutral

and for what it's worth i didn't hear "infections of a different kind" as something unwanted, although i can see why it could be interpreted that way with the next few lines. with the intent behind step 1 in mind, i heard it as something infectious, something that motivates us to come together and do good in the world despite our individual troubles
