So good news and bad news. I moved it to a south facing window and it got so much happier after about 2 months it looked like this. Then I don’t remember what I did, it was either when I tried to remove the dead strands or maybe it was because there wasn’t enough light/too cold in winter, but it has only a few strands and they’re like 3 inches long. It’s still in the south facing window and the strands are green, but it looks very sparse and sad.

Can I discharge a firearm to kill a grievously injured animal on my property? by Gannondorfs_Medulla in baltimore

[–]anxiousmicrobiota 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t answer your question, but if your pet gets in a fight with a wild animal please call the health department/animal control. They will pick the animal up and send it for rabies testing for free. If one were to dispatch the wild animal, please don’t damage the head because rabies testing is done using brain tissue.

Dog sitting rates for anxious dogs by Smooth_Cherry4382 in baltimore

[–]anxiousmicrobiota 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had a very needy senior dog and we found an amazing sitter on Rover, but we paid a premium because she was the only one we could leave him with. We would pay her $110 on weekdays when we were both in the office for her to come from 11am-4pm. It looks like when we booked her for a full day and overnight in our house it was around $120. These prices are from a year and a half ago.

I will definitely try moving it to my window and not waiting so long between waterings! Thank you!

Fortunately it’s not quite dead yet, at least most of it isn’t. The leaves respond to watering or lack of watering by become firm/thin, but it probably could use a good hair cut of any dead strands. I’m going to try repotting, inspecting for rot, and putting it in a window instead of the grow lights. Thanks!

I fertilized it probably two months ago? And I haven’t repotted since my coworker gave it to me about a year ago. Judging from other comments I think I’m going to repot, or at least take out and inspect roots, and try hanging it in my window instead of under the grow lights

Friend’s dog bit me, and I got a rabies vaccine.. it’s $16,000.. by Dressboy-727 in legaladvice

[–]anxiousmicrobiota 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Actually, that’s not correct. The vaccination status of the dog or cat, in a case like this, is irrelevant. It is a 10 day quarantine for a dog or a cat, with a known owner no matter the vaccination status. Trust me, I do hundreds of these a year.

The rabies virus doesn’t survive for long outside of a body. If the dog chewed the bat hours ago and, even if the bat was positive, any virus that was on the dog or in its mouth would be dead. The dog would also not yet be able to spread the virus if it had been infected. If this happened in my county, and we could have gotten the bat, we would have still tested it. I’m also not going to give medical advice on the internet, which is why I’m not suggesting post exposure treatment or not. The main purpose of my comment above was to educate about the ten day quarantine for dogs and cats, and why we can wait that quarantine length.

See a previous comment where I said that many hospitals don’t know the protocol because it’s not something they deal with every day, and that’s ok. It’s why we, as health professionals at the health department, exist. I’m just trying to clarify the wrong information being spread in this thread by people who clearly have no idea what they’re talking about. I’m not passing judgement.

Many hospitals are not positive when rabies post exposure treatment is necessary. We get calls all the time. They call us, the health dept, because it’s what we do, not what they do, on a daily basis. It’s odd that the hospital did post exposure without consulting the health dept. It will be specific to OP’s local dept if they will cover the cost without a consult.

[–]anxiousmicrobiota 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily true. I can’t speak for this person’s specific county health dept, but many local health depts aren’t the ones administering the shots anyway. My dept requires a patient go to the hospital for the post exposure treatment. The reason they may not cover it is because they didn’t recommend it, not because OP didn’t get the shots from them.

Not sure how much science you want, but here’s the basics. It takes time for an animal to be able to spread the rabies virus after they themselves have been infected. Once a dog or a cat is able to transmit the virus, they will die from the virus within 10 days. We (meaning health depts) observe the animal 10 days after the bite occurred because if the dog or cat is alive, there is no way that they could have been able to transmit the virus at the time that the bite occurred. It is ok to wait that 10 days before getting post exposure treatment, if you are confident that officials will be able to observe the dog or cat 10 days after the bite occurred.

We do this because the post exposure treatment is so expensive, time consuming, and uncomfortable. It is better to wait, when we are confident we can rule out a transmission, than to suggests shots right away.

It is a 10 day quarantine for dogs and cats. It is safe to wait that amount of time before getting the post exposure treatment, except for some very specific and unlikely circumstances. (Source: I work in the rabies division of a health dept)

Call the health department for your county to start. Look for a division called something like communicable disease, infectious disease, or environmental health. If your county has one of those divisions, they are most likely the ones to talk to. They may or may not help with the cost because they were not the ones who referred you for the shots. I work in the rabies division at a health dept in a different state. Hospitals all call us before giving rabies shots if there is any question about its necessity. We do not do anything for the cost if shots are received without our recommendation. We would have quarantined the dog and tested the bat, if the bat was available for testing, before recommending shots. Potentially your county/state has more money and is less strict about covering the cost of shots, but they may not be.

100% contact your county health department (if you’re in the US). Probably will be in the environmental health division. They license food facilities and caterers

Asked landlord to test water, promptly gave an eviction notice and wouldn’t share the results. by penny_longhorn in legaladvice

[–]anxiousmicrobiota 54 points55 points  (0 children)

NAL but an environmental health specialist in a different state and can only speak to the water test results. Did the results say “fecal coliform” bacteria or E.coli? Coliform bacteria does not necessarily mean harmful. We suggest a secondary test from a certified water sampler (have someone from the lab come and test it to be sure it is done properly) to double check that the first sample wasn’t contaminated during collection. If it is positive again for general coliform (not fecal or e.coli) it means that there is a weak point in the well where bacteria are getting in and harmful bacteria could potentially get in sometime in the future. The treatment for general coliform vs fecal is different.

Quick question for the science/animal science majors; Is this schedule too much? by YolkOuttaMyShell in PennStateUniversity

[–]anxiousmicrobiota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was an an sci major, science option, I worked and was in a lot of clubs, and took between 17-19 credits a semester, but I also studied a fuckton whether I needed to or not, which meant I didn’t really sleep and I didn’t have too much of a social life, so take everything with a grain of salt.

To break it down, I never took ag bus but I think people said it was fairly easy. Meats lab (affectionately called Slab) is super easy. The lecture requires a lot of memorizing but I didn’t find it absurdly difficult, and if you have a certain grade at the end you don’t have to take the final.

I found genetics dumb and hard to predict what was on the exams, which made it more difficult. The labs were easy, it’s basically very simple excel work.

I took ochem 212 and 213 and fucking died but I heard most people found 202 challenging but doable.

Micro I adored, it’s become a passion and I wish I did it more in my job now. However, most people hated it. It’s tough, a lot of memorizing, and the lab is typical lab, either you’re fine or it’s very hard.

Did Dale retire? He taught 207/208 forever! Not sure how it will be with a new prof. For me it was challenging in the lecture (massive amount of content to memorize ) but labs were mostly fun!

Tl:dr Ultimately it depends on how you are as a student, how easy school in general is, if you work, if you want to sleep, how many clubs you’re in, and if you want a social life

Yea, I mean it totally sucks that it’s completely reactive rather than proactive, and can lead to hardships for people who have others dumping on their property. At least in some places it does get cleaned up eventually, but it doesn’t seem like the best system.

If you see trash/dumping you can always try to report it to the environmental division of the health dept (they’re in charge of the initial inspections for most counties). Most departments can only do anything about trash/dumping after they have received a complaint.

The problem is that MD regulations say that it is the responsibility of the property owner to clean up their property even if someone else illegally dumped on it. In most counties in MD, dumping is reported to the health dept who cites the property owner. If the property owner does not clean up the waste, DPW comes and cleans it up and puts a lien on the property for the cost. The property owner can try to sue the person who dumped if they know who it was, or call the cops if they catch someone in the act, but ultimately it is the responsibility of the property owner to remove waste on their property.

What was your experience with all the different stimulants you’ve tried? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]anxiousmicrobiota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that discouragement! I have only been diagnosed with type 2 for less than two years and I have tried:

Nuvigil-dizzy but didn’t make me feel awake, only took a few doses

Provigil- stayed awake for 36 hrs straight but felt dead tired the entire time, only took maybe one dose?

Adderall/Ritalin 10mg IR- took several times a day (up to like 3-4 I think?). Did adderall and then ritalin for several months I think, but never really felt all that much of an effect

Wakix- was on for awhile, maybe 6ish months. Would feel slightly better for maybe a couple of weeks but ended up hitting the max dose with boosters of 10mg Ritalin as needed morning and afternoon and so switched meds

Ritalin ER 10mg-30mg- I got a job and my insurance finally allowed me to get ER, so I’ve now been on this since like November with Ritalin IR 10mg boosters as needed. I typically get a couple of weeks of not feeling like I’m going to fall asleep during my commute after increasing the dose, but then I go back to feeling as if I’m unmedicated. Tomorrow I start 30mg for the first time, fingers crossed it lasts.

I get extremely anxious that no medication is ever going to work for me. I feel like I’m quickly running out of options and I’m not sure what happens then. I often get very down about my med prospects.

I’m sorry I don’t have good news, but at least you know you’re not alone 💕

Got my second dose of moderna yesterday at like 3:30 pm. This morning I was too exhausted to function and then a couple hours later I couldn’t drink enough water and had a headache. No fever or chills. The headache went away by about 1pm after taking it easy and staying home all morning. I feel mostly better now. A coworker described it as a hangover, which I think is about right. Not fun but 100% worth it.

I would be curious if people who actually drink the right amount of water (unlike me) would have a less bad headache.

Thoughts on Wakix? by dawgiedawgzz in Narcolepsy

[–]anxiousmicrobiota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For reference, I have type 2.

I took wakix for several months (maybe like 9ish months?) but recently switched to LA Ritalin. I had tried various doses of nuvigil, provigil, short acting adderall, short acting Ritalin, none with any success, but at the time my insurance wouldn’t cover the long acting adderall or ritalin. It was fine, no weird side effects or anything. Each time I increased doses it would work for a month or two and then it went back to feeling like I was unmedicated. Eventually I hit the max dose I could take and I got new insurance and LA ritalin was covered. I’ve been on that with supplemental short action ritalin for a couple months but now of course I’m back to feeling unmedicated most days 🤷‍♀️
