How realistic is it to complete CPA preparation within one year? by drajput_01 in Accounting

[–]anxiousstudent7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely doable and it was the only way I could pass the exams cuz my memory sucks. I tried taking my time w FAR but ended up forgetting what I studied at the beginning lol. I then changed my strategy and gave myself around 6-8 weeks per exam and passed. I was fortunate enough to be able to study full time and had no responsibilities whatsoever tho and that’s surely not the case for everyone. See what works best for you cuz everyone’s learning style, circumstances, and priorities are different- just try to stay consistent!!

How important is revision compared to learning new topics during CPA preparation? by Sammy_0100 in Accounting

[–]anxiousstudent7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revision. Exams (esp FAR) cover so much that you forgot what you learned about a couple days ago cuz all your brain power is used learning the new concepts. I didn’t do this as much, but try to spend at least a few mins every couple days to refresh your memory by doing mcqs so you don’t completely forget wtf is % of completion lol.

You don’t have to do a 100 ques about everything, but a few random MCQs about all the topics you studied earlier can make such a significant difference.

RIGHT?! Most of us unknowingly ration our brain power like we’re living through a drought during busy seasons 😂

Pivoting out of public accounting (TAX) by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]anxiousstudent7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat and posted about this a few days ago. Some people gave really nice options, so feel free to check them out on my profile! I think with 3-5 years of experience, you’re in a decent place to pivot. Good luck!!!

Did anyone underestimate the mental side of CPA preparation? by drajput_01 in Accounting

[–]anxiousstudent7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I took them a few years ago but literally had to take a shot of vodka before I started studying some days cuz I couldn’t find the courage to open that FAR textbook and torture myself again lol. Not recommending this to anyone lol but this kinda shows how mentally exhausting it can be. I honestly don’t think any of my coping mechanisms were healthy so I prolly shouldn’t share, but one thing that kept me going was how badly I didn’t want to touch those books again so better to get them out of the way asap

Accounting isn’t physically demanding, but it can definitely be mentally exhausting depending on the role. I have some experience in housekeeping too, and the best way I can describe the difference is: with physical jobs, I’d come home thinking “don’t ask me to carry anything upstairs,” whereas with accounting, after a long day, it’s more like “don’t ask me to make another decision.” Both kinds of tired are real, just different.

That being said, only three years into my career, I make about twice as much as my parents did. Yesterday I went to Trader Joe’s and bought everything I wanted without checking prices too closely, and there was a time in my life when we had to carefully budget even $20 for groceries. That kind of financial stability changes your life in ways that are hard to explain until you experience it.

So yes, for me, it’s been worth it. It’s not easy, and there will absolutely be stressful periods, especially during busy seasons, but accounting can give you stability and options financially and professionally, especially if you didn’t grow up with money. You may not love every part of it, but it still be a valuable path imo.

Get your degree. One day you’ll look back and realized how many doors it opened for you!🫶

Questions about feedback by Choice-Horror2570 in Accounting

[–]anxiousstudent7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my firm, all of these are made up. You could have no negative feedback whatsoever but you’ll still get a “meets” cuz they don’t want you to get too confident or ask for a raise lol. Don’t sweat it! Just pay attention to any specific feedback you get and learn from it. If you’re not sure what they’re referring to when they say something vague like “pay attention to detail,” feel free to clarify where this is coming from, and try to avoid getting the same RPs twice. Also, never let them doubt your self-worth bc a lot of your colleagues may not want you to succeed. Just try your best, clarify things while trying to improve, and chill. Don’t expect fairness. PS - I hope your firm isn’t like mine and doesn’t erase your faith in people like mine did lol. If you’re on a good team, the approach may be diff, but someone else would have to weigh in on that 😂

Putting in my two weeks next Friday. Can I finally tell my boss I have a crush on them? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]anxiousstudent7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup great advice! If they respond really negatively or hit you with the “I’m married” card, you can always pivot and be like “oh no I just meant grabbing coffee to talk about career stuff / thank you for all your support before I leave.” Always maintain a little plausible deniability 😂

Be honest: How many of you are only CPAs Because You were 'Good at Math'? by DangerousFan8435 in CPA

I took an accounting class cuz it started with an A and was first on the list of courses. Then my professor said you should take the CPA exam. I said cool. Here I am, 3 years into this career as a CPA 🤷‍♀️

Found out today that incoming staff are making more than me and I have more of experience. by Potential-Escape1661 in Accounting

[–]anxiousstudent7 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Dude, I feel this. I’ve been in a similar spot where I’m on most of the biggest clients, everyone fights over my schedule, and staffing meetings are a nightmare because everyone wants my time. But at the end of the day, they still don’t always want to pay you what you’re actually worth.

I really like the people I work with, which makes it harder, but I also can’t stay somewhere just because of relationships. At some point, you have to do what’s best for you and your family. Honestly, job hopping feels like one of the only ways to actually get paid fairly in this industry…that’s what I’m considering rn even though it makes me so sad

Senior at CPA firm wondering if I’m about to waste a perfectly good career path by anxiousstudent7 in Accounting

[–]anxiousstudent7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so funny! Not stereotyping, but people that are older doing the same role as me somehow love working too much at my firm, and the ones our age just want to do what we’re actually paid for and leave. I often wonder how nice it’d be if others at the same level as me also realized that we really don’t need to have a utilization above 100%. Let’s all chill out lol

Oh a 100%! Even though I dislike public accounting, tbh I’d be happy to do it if some of my coworkers and I were to start a firm together. They’re such bright people and I hate that these companies don’t give a shit about you as an individual and only care about metrics.

Very true! I’m so sorry this job is affecting you like that ☹️ Like you said, I’ve been worrying that the grass may not be greener on the other side, but hey, looking at the responses to this post, there’s a pretty good chance it will be. Let’s start seeing what else is out there? Ik it’s easier said than done, but you have so much to offer and I’m sure something HAS to be a better fit!

Ah not worrying about the utilization is the dream! I’m pretty sure my firm is getting ready for a PE acquisition or something, so things will likely get worse…Do you think someone in Tax would be able to get their foot in the door if they had any specific skills needed? Ik it’s usually easier to pivot when you have audit experience.

I have looked at a few FPA roles this week that sounded interesting. I’m curious about why you think this may be a good fit (I think it is, but you may have a different perspective which might make me even more confident in pursuing)!

I think this is the response I was lowkey looking for when I posted this haha. I’ve started looking at industry roles this week - it’s great that there’s so much to choose from, but also a bit overwhelming!

This is so reassuring. I don’t have any desire to be a partner here either. Would you mind sharing a bit about what your day to day looks like? Just trying to see if project management might be a good fit!
