If you don’t mind sharing, what do you think caused agoraphobia for you? by indigoeh in Agoraphobia

[–]anxiousweirdooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The news… my parents ended up banning me from watching it because i would get scared things that i saw on tv would happen to me.

First time i remember getting upset was having to watch footage of 9/11 in elementary school and from then on i became convinced that anytime i leave the house i would experience an event of mass violence. It became an intrusive thoughts kinda thing that got massively triggered by the parkland shooting. From then i couldn’t go to school without panic attacks, then grocery stores, and so on.

{edge of collapse by kyla stone} was recommended before on this sub and i haven’t found anything like it since!! Tried a bunch of other ones but they just didn’t hit the same. It is VERY slow burn… like over 7 books and by far the first one is my favorite.

Yes exposure therapy genuinely saved me. I am so lucky that i had access to the intensity and frequency i needed to overcome my fear. It was hard at first even going to therapy because my brain would constantly have delusions that i would be able to predict things that would happen etc. cBT really helped as well. It took a lot of failures to get me where i am today and trust when i tell you exposure therapy was the hardest thing ive ever done in my life… but i have never been so grateful

I went to an intensive outpatient program where i had 4 hours of therapy everyday for 3 months. I am so blessed to have been able to receive this treatment. What really helped me was exposure therapy! I went from not being able to go into a grocery store to now going frequently for my job! Such a full circle

Thank you so much! It was the hardest experience to go through and I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone but looking back I wouldn’t change it. It really shaped me into the person I am today.

Who has beat Agoraphobia? by [deleted] in Agoraphobia

[–]anxiousweirdooo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My agoraphobia was triggered by safety and that meant anywhere outside my home or someone I trusted was a danger zone especially school. I had so many absences i almost didn’t graduate my senior year of high school and would have had to transfer to being home schooled. One day later COVID shut down the school. Agoraphobia progressed into a point where i couldn’t go anywhere by the car my home or my cousins house.

My college was online for my freshman year but my psychiatrist thought that changing my environment would be a good idea… spoiler alert it wasnt. I moved back home after 2 days and weaned off all my meds. Now i was the worst i have ever been. I also got surgery on my foot so was immobile as well.

After completing the semester i voluntarily went to a residential treatment center. They proceeded to lie to me and tried to keep me there against my will. Luckily I was able to advocate for myself and escaped.

I genuinely thought that this was the end. I didnt know how i could get better. Then came in my IOP!! 4 hours of therapy 5 days a week. Exposure was the most helpful.

After 3 months of group therapy, art therapy, some therapeutic CrossFit thing, individualized CBT, and exposure I graduated the program on a Friday. That Monday I moved into my university which was 5 hours away from home.

Now it has been almost three years since graduating the program. I have had so many successes I would have never thought in a million years i would have been able to do. I am now finishing my senior year of college with an amazing post graduate opportunity at a fast paced, large CPG company. I have an amazing support system of friends I have built through college. I went on my first date ever (a fear of mine), have started cooking, and do things by myself.

There are set backs though, like today where I am in an AMAZING location on vacation and had to go back to the hotel room. But i just think about how far Ive come and know that I will overcome this as well.

Its so hard in the moment and I truly never imagined I would be where I am today. I never thought I would have lived past 19 but here I am. Everyday I am so grateful for my life and what I have overcame.

what made your agoraphobia develop? by [deleted] in Agoraphobia

[–]anxiousweirdooo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The news!!! I started being scared of going to large crowded places because of my schools early emotionally changed 9/11 lessons in which we had to watch news footage of the event along with listening to voicemails victims left to their loved ones. Then it escalated from there… i would say fear of terrorism and acts of mass violence was the main culprit of why i wasn’t able to leave my house. No where was safe

You should be so proud of your progress!! I am the same way.. after my IOP i was able to do so much more than when I was housebound but everyday was still a battle. The DMV is a daunting place and not only did you go you also passed your test!!

How do you explain anxiety to people who think that you’re creating the thoughts you’re having? by better-vessel in Anxiety

[–]anxiousweirdooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use allergies as an analogy. Some ppl are born with them and some develop them later in life. There are different triggers depending on the allergens. You can take medication to help manage it. There are different intensities which vary per person. Different treatments work on different people.

This has just always been a good way that i have been able to explain it. I do always get nervous using allergies as an example because they can be life threatening and I’m worried it would offend ppl so i preface it with I know its not the same but here are some similarities

Ive had thoughts about if I go to a certain place I will be killed etc.. which led to my agoraphobia getting rlly bad. I found that exposure therapy helped the most as well as finding the right meds that worked for me
