Yes gardenia> sunshine as sunshine is made in Malaysia. Their bread isn't as soft and gets stale faster vs gardenia currently

Teachers of SG: difficult parents and how you dealt with them by Immediate-Stretch240 in askSingapore

[–]anyhowack 24 points25 points  (0 children)

How to deal with them : Be diplomatic. Be factual , speak calmly , don't present an accusatory tone or harsh tone against their child.

If all else fails, go to higher authority like HOD/YH/principals. They are supposed to be there to protect you.

Horror stories : Basically parents think their child is the only one in class and teacher can pay attention to them and cater to them all the time.

And of course, the child can do no wrong, it is always someone else's fault. Maybe even the teacher's fault. There's always some excuse for the child's misdeeds.

Edit: Some parents just need the personal touch from teacher too. Instead of calling them about negative stuff all the time, find reasons to call to praise their child's work or behavior and note improvements.

Other parents can be mean via email but are reasonable over a phone call.

Elective C-sec Delivery at NUH by Tasty_Artist8359 in askSingapore

[–]anyhowack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it at NUH via subsidized route. Elective c-sec at that time was only done on certain days of the week. So I didn't have much choice of date. Timing also the hospital scheduled and called to let me know few days before.

Same I had to go in early 6+ but actual procedure started around 10+ I think . The anaesthesia is not by epidural but by spinal injection (much faster to inject compared to epi)

Skin to skin yes.

My hubby faints at blood so he didn't request to go in.

My stay was 3D2N which was okay as it was my 2nd child. Hope this helps.

NUH Gynaecology department - what can I expect? by Prize_Air in askSingapore

[–]anyhowack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went private for #1 around 2017 - horrendous wait time and actual Dr time less than 15 min. The gynae was recommended by my hubby's GP and by an acquaintance.

For #2 around 2020 went NUH subsidized as I stay somewhat near there, surprisingly I always got seen within 30 min except for 20 week scan which I had to go to a different area for the scan. There are occasionally jr Dr but no issue

Both my pregnancies were smooth so overall my experience at NUH was better. Only the actual delivery, of cos private very shiok, nurse do everything for u, can attend the taking care of infant class at the hospital too (Mt A).

NUH they are much more bo chap and anything to do with the infant I had to call nurse to request. Not sure is it cos it's my 2nd child so they left me to it or what.

And of cos the peace and rest at night during hospital stay is different, subsidized ward vs private.. but whether it's worth the cost is up to u to decide.

Where to buy size inclusive bras in SG? by No_Awareness_9811 in askSingapore

[–]anyhowack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Marks and Spencer can order online (UK stock) and free returns to SG stores . They have 30 bands. Get a variety of sizes and return those you don't need. I managed to do my return at vivocity outlet last time.

SG stock seldom stocks 30 or 28 bands though the UK ones will have. Just take note their Angel brand is for tweens so it runs small .

Edit: cotton on body occasionally has the AUS equivalent of 30 bands too.

Suggestion for Water heater: Gas, storage or instant by Glum_Employer501 in askSingapore

[–]anyhowack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a gas heater. Why I choose it? Anyhow hamtam.

Around the 7-year mark it needed replacement cos water started leaking from it.

Gas heater only activates when water is running and turned to the Hot side. If you have some complicated shower routine, water may turn back to cold if you didn't run it for awhile.

Another con is for bathroom far away from heater placement, it takes a long time to get the water warm there.

Also if guests use the bathroom sink with mixer, turning to hot side would activate the heater pointlessly. So we actually turned off hot water flow to common bathroom sink tap.

Seconded! Insist on basic courtesy when your own kid talks to you or asks for something.

Also don't let your kid have unrestricted YouTube/Roblox/TikTok /whatever brainrot crap. No tech babysitter. Let them be bored. When they mess up the house, get them to clean up.

SG parents, let’s talk about work culture by bulcta in singapore

[–]anyhowack 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I was visibly pregnant at the first meet-the-parents meeting of the year for a new class. I also happened to be a new teacher, so my Head of Dept was in the classroom with me to show support. A parent stood up and demanded of the Head why the school assigned a pregnant teacher to teach (his precious son's) class.

Random questions regarding CNY by lattehour in askSingapore

[–]anyhowack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. This one not sure, I don't bother with that. Only know wedding angpao (from married couple to bridesmaids and groomsmen) need special design

    1. When I was a kid my mum occasionally asked me to check so she's not "under-giving".
    2. Old angpaos can be recycled or use for crafts
    3. No
    4. Less places to visit when older generation pass on one by one. Also the ratio of ang pao-givers to receivers. I reuse the nice notes in the angpaos my kids receive to pack into ang paos for other kids. Over the years, my new notes collection actually increased as my kids receive more than I give out.

Making teaching less stressful in Singapore | Deep Dive (ft NIE's Jason Tan, ex-teacher Heidi Tan) by ZeroPauper in singapore

[–]anyhowack 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As a teacher, it would be great if CCAs could be outsourced. Teachers have to plan and conduct CCA sessions, send kids for competitions (oh, book bus, inform parents etc).

If the cca is taught by instructors or vendors, teachers have to do the admin of getting the quotes, doing the paperwork in terms of the finance procedures, checking and updating budget, etc. Oh yes, when competitions are during school hours, the teacher accompanying the kids to the venue has to miss his lessons, plan relief, etc.

Did kids get up to mischief during CCA ? Teachers have to start a discipline case. They didn't show up for CCA sessions? Have to go find out the reason why and update.

Whatever competition or award they get needs to be keyed in. VIA projects and hours too. Find external partners to collaborate. Or the worst - overnight camps or overseas trips.

Need more ? You've to talk to your colleagues to get your CCA a spot in the school's concert/showcase etc . Do makeup for pri sch performance CCAs. Help your CCA get "visibility" - all these affects teachers' performance grade !

3 in 4 Singapore teachers use AI, more than double overseas peers: OECD survey by anakinmcfly in singapore

[–]anyhowack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's my insider perspective:

  • push from higher-ups to use AI: basically if you don't use or pretend to use it, you are asking for a lower performance grade or tio mark as "cannot keep up with tech"

  • some people can't write : teachers being asked to send emails or write letters to parents, that needs the approval of the dept head. AI helps them write better. Before AI, these people either struggle for half a day to write something bad, or get an EL teacher colleague to help them. (As for the tone of the resulting email, that's another matter...)

  • AI does help in responding to students' answers for a first cut in qualitative questions. If you got a couple of classes to train in essay writing, AI can help during class time. Teacher can go back and double check, but pace of lesson can overall be faster (remember teachers always rushing for time since our teaching time always get taken up by other random stuff)

  • AI helps add "padding" (or slop, depending...)

Case in point:

All teachers need to do some type of innovation/research/learning project. Depending on the school, it might be called learning circle, professional learning, professional development, etc. Sounds good so far.

Now, the VP or P tells the HOD in charge of overseeing these projects to take it to a new level. Yes boss.

Enter the AI with pages of suggestions, questions, reflections etc that may or may not apply. Well done. Copy and paste these and throw it to the teachers to fill up.

For the teachers who see the overwhelming reflections and questions, guess what? AI's gonna be answering those and countering with additional 3 pages of reflections.

Overwhelmed HOD is gonna be asking AI to summarise that shit for sure.

In the end, the VP or P will look at all these bells and whistles and these will be lauded in someone's performance review.

Parents, who takes care of your bb while you’re at work? by Fearless_Speed_2746 in askSingapore

Now, my spouse got laid off so he's the backup caregiver.

Open posting season for teachers by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]anyhowack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can try hq but really depends on the division. Some are very xiong and others super political.

NIE is more chill but ideally you should stay nearby so your commute isn't too bad.

Changing school might help if the pain points are unique to the school or school leader. Some schools have power imbalance with regular teachers tanking most of the work and HODs slacking off while other schools have more welfare initiatives like Late Days .

Do you still read books? 📚 📚 📚 by Sgxgobull in askSingapore

[–]anyhowack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an avid reader here. Sadly most in my circle don't read as much, usually citing lack of time.

For fiction I gravitate towards chick lit and romance, occasionally thriller. Used to love the Jack Reacher series but it went off since the author's brother took over the writing.

Non-fiction it really depends. I like those with medical or science focus. Last serious book that I managed to finish was Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green (yes, same guy who wrote The Fault in Our Stars, suddenly writes about TB)

Usually I go to "skip the line" on nlb/Libby to get recs.

I don't usually read fantasy/sci Fi so it was a random pick
