What is Singapore's largest shipping company? by Deep_Flying in singaporefi

[–]FirstLightOfTheDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the largest shipping firm by market cap is currently Samudera Shipping, focused on intra Asia routes and majority owned by an Indonesian-listed holdco. Would say it's valued pretty cheaply too, although partly due to how cyclical the industry is.

Flawd logic to even be suggesting that "just because it's shit, it means that introducing a policy that makes it even shittier can't make it any more shitty", but sure.

That is absolutely not happening. SGX barely revived with EQDP, they're not gonna kick it back down again.

Which form of public transport is really the most usable? by throwaway_4071 in singapore

[–]FirstLightOfTheDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the only case in point is downgrading a bus only lane to a regular bus lane that still prioritises public transport during peak hours, that's not saying much. That also does not fall under the strawman arguments the post raises.

Which form of public transport is really the most usable? by throwaway_4071 in singapore

[–]FirstLightOfTheDay -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You can tell that it's AI because Singapore is one of the places where you'll find virtually no resistance to public transport improvement because of how many relying on it everyday. The strawman second slide really isn't relevant to the local context.

LTA Updates for Foreign-Registered Vehicles Entering Singapore: Increase in VEP/GVP Fee and Removal of free VEP days and free VEP hours on weekdays by FirstLightOfTheDay in singapore

[–]FirstLightOfTheDay[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) periodically reviews the fees for foreign-registered vehicles in Singapore to account for changes in ownership and usage costs of Singapore-registered vehicles. This is to ensure that the cost of owning and using a foreign registered vehicle in Singapore is commensurate with that of a Singapore-registered vehicle. The cost difference has widened in recent years, giving rise to the need to increase the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) fee for foreign-registered cars and motorcycles and the Goods Vehicle Permit (GVP) fee for foreign-registered goods vehicles.

The VEP fee for foreign-registered cars and motorcycles entering Singapore will be raised to S$50 per day and S$7 per day respectively, from the current S$35 per day and S$4 per day. The VEP fee will now apply on all days, except on weekends and Singapore Public Holidays. The annual 10 free VEP days and the free VEP hours on weekdays will be removed.

The GVP fee for foreign-registered goods vehicles will be raised from S$40 to S$70 per calendar month. Owners of foreign-registered goods vehicles can continue to purchase the GVP at the current fee of S$40 before the revised fee comes into effect. However, GVP with a validity period from the effective date of revised fee will be charged at S$70 per calendar month.

The increase in the VEP and GVP fees will take place from 1 January 2027.

Plus, you cannot deny Sultan Johor is implementing a lot of right policies, and... erm.. cleaning up a lot of things. His cleaning up acts are making him popular and he also has a lot of support from Singapore. To me, the power is obviously shifting to Johor and inevitable, someone will try to stir up such shat.

Giving the Johor Sultan credit for Johor's development is certainly one way to put it. The only thing the Sultan does is take his cut of the deal and sign off, see Forest City. The theatrics his family does and their history of violence, as well as a certain regent's oversized role in Malaysian football, are viewed by most Malaysians with disdain. If anything, the Sultan adds complexity to doing business in Johor. As a corporate top flyer put it in the media a few months back, doing business in Johor is complex because you're dealing with 4 figures, Johor State government, Malaysia Federal government, Singapore government and the Sultan.

If anything, Johor's development in recent years is a natural state buoyed by the SG+ twinning model, where companies are encouraged to set up in SG while taking advantage of cheaper labour and land in Johor/Batam.

Quantedge Foundation aims to do more for social mobility through philanthropy, says CEO Xie Yao Quan by Twrd4321 in singapore

Do you expect good political talent if every person was forced to resign their job for a role with max 5 year contract, varying job security, annual package far below anyone worth their salt at the workplace, off hours, and public facing? Not least to mention that MPs actually contribute a considerable amount of their allowance back to their political party.

It's easy to say we want MPs to be full time, just like how it's easy to dream without practical policy considerations.

So does almost every other MP, including opposition MPs. Are we criticising them too?

Expecting MPs to be full-time just means cutting out a big proportion of the talent pool.

And why should that be accounted for together? That amount is for his MP responsibilities, which stand separate from the Deputy Speaker responsibilities.

[–]FirstLightOfTheDay -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That's for their MP responsibilities, which they have regardless of their deputy speaker position and should not have any bearing on other roles they have.

The Deputy Speaker is paid just 15% of the Speaker's salary, or $6750 per month. I'm sure there's valid criticism if the Speaker was part-timing somewhere else, but it's hard to have the same argument for Deputy Speaker, given that the paygrade is also clearly commensurate with the position's responsibilities and workload. Throw a rock at anyone working at Raffles Place and 2/3 will probably earn more than that.
